Thanks so much to Cindy of County Home 407 for hosting another fabulous Pinterest Challenge Hop.

I’ve been participating in these for years, but haven’t been able to join in the last few months.

It was so sweet of Cindy to keep me in the loop so I could jump back in!

There are a few reasons I enjoy joining these virtual blog hops.

  • the girls participating are truly amazing, kind, supportive friends even though I have not met most in person.
  • there is inspiration all gathered together where you can see how one idea photo takes different directions with the style and creativity of each blogger.
  • I can pass on all the ideas to you!

If you following the hop in order you are coming over from Cindy’s and her 5 reasons container gardens are perfect for her and for us too.

This month’s photo is a Pinterest Pin from Carlene at Organized Clutter.

There are several items that jump out to me right away and speak to things I love.

  • Vintage
  • Galvanized
  • Geraniums
  • Reds and Yellows
  • Watering Cans
  • Picket Fence
  • Green Gardening Table

Often I recreate a visual space similar to what is inspiring me in the photo, but with my White Arrows Home twist.

These past posts are good examples:

This month, even though we have had an incredibly warm winter, we still don’t have flowers where I can plant.

So, I’m going back into my old garden photos to bring some ideas that still work well.

Vintage

I love using vintage containers to hold my plants and this old metal wagon is one of my favorites.

vintage wagon full of flowers

Later in the Summer heading into Fall, I can change up the plantings for the season.

Vintage rusty green wagon full of sunflowers.

Galvanized

For several of my containers, I just simply set the already potted plant inside the container.

I did this with one of my Skotch Koolers because I didn’t want to actually fill it with dirt.

It also saves a lot of time.

Red and Yellow

I love decorating with red and yellow blooms around the house.

Geraniums

Geraniums are my favorite summer flower for the cabin.

Gardening With Kids

This week I’ve been sharing a Blog Series on Parenting and this post fits in beautifully.

One of my favorite ways to spend time with my kids is outside in nature whether hiking and exploring, letting them find adventure while I read nearby or working on projects.

Gardening with kids has so many benefits in their development.

  • Responsibility
  • Seeing the results of their hard work
  • Results appear quickly to keep them encouraged and engaged
  • Pride in consistency
  • Increased independence
  • Trying new things with low risk in failure

Next up you are heading over to to DIY Beautify where Cindy is sharing planting pansies in baskets.

Thanks so much for coming by.

Here’s a full list of all the blogs participating so you can be sure not to miss any.

Christmas Nativity Set

Here are some of the ways I welcome all hearts home for Christmas.

A Warm Welcome

Not only will my kids find the porch decorated when they arrive, but often they will find me looking out the window or outside waiting anxiously for them to drive up.

fresh Christmas greens roping porch

Set the Table

One of my favorite places to be with my family is around the table. It’s a priority for us and always has been, to eat together as often as possible.

We have such great conversations and share so many laughs. I felt so sad when my kids were sharing with me how so many of their friends never sit together at the table with their family.

Christmas Tablescape

Here are a few tips that helped us have table time:

  • Keep it a priority.
  • If dinner doesn’t work in the schedule, do breakfast or after school snack. Adjust to what can work, don’t feel stuck if the dinner doesn’t work.
  • Give yourself grace. Try to do it as often as possible, even if you make it Thursday night family dinner, once a week.
  • Have conversation starters to help you chat.
  • Start with a prayer.
  • Don’t clear dishes right away. As soon as you do, everyone leaves the table. Ignore the empty dishes and everyone will keep chatting.
  • Play some games. We would always do a listing game going around the table, like naming football teams or baseball teams.
  • Take turns sharing what was good that happened today. I read the book Life is Good by the Jacob brothers who founded Life is Good company. That was the question their mom would ask them every night at dinner and it inspired them so much.
  • It’s never too late to start a habit or tradition, even eating together at the table. Maybe this Holiday or 2023 is the time to start.

Gift Exchange

One of the sweetest things is to see what gifts my kids pick out for each other. It’s amazing to watch them take on extra jobs to have the money for the special gift they have picked out or to see what they handmake in their extra time.

Christmas Presents

Make Time For Listening

Something I am working on is slowing down, putting down my phone and being fully present with my kids and trying to really listen and focus on them. It’s especially good if I can get them for periods of time one on one.

I want them to have my undivided attention to hear the things going on, the updates, the dreams even the struggles. I’m blessed that we all talk and text a lot even when they are away, but its really special to have these face to face connections as often as we can.

Setting out a special drink by the fire is a great way to do that over the holidays. I shared more about this IN THIS POST.

Winter Decor- Hot Chocolate

Hang Their Stockings

This is a year where all my kids won’t be with me for Christmas, so we are celebrating as a family earlier in December when they can all get home at the same time. So some of the usual traditions we are moving up.

We will do stockings and gift exchanges one morning that weekend. There are so many fun ideas to add to stockings. Here are a few fun ones:

Make Their Favorites

When the kids are coming home I always ask them what meals or treats they want to be sure I make. They all have their favorites. For one of my boys it’s stuffed peppers. For another it’s steak and my daughter, big breakfasts.

Maybe you have a favorite cookie, bars or snack mix that your crew loves to have when they come home. I love adding cookies to our Holiday cookie jar. This jar has sat on our counter for almost 25 years. It was a sweet wedding gift.

The Smells

To have their first step into the house smell amazing is a simple gesture- light a candle or a stove top simmer.

Giving my kids a welcome that meets all their senses aids in the memory making.

Easy Mornings

I want my kids to feel like they can totally relax and take a break. They work so hard and I want a trip home to truly feel like vacation. If they want to stay in their jammies all day, no problem.

Check out these cute mugs in my shop.

Did you know I have a brick and mortar shop? If you live far away everything is online as well. You can find great gifts and special treasures for those on your list! SHOP HERE

I’ll make big breakfasts but have a self serve coffee bar set up for the early birds or as people slowly make their way downstairs.

Spode Christmas Tree, Christmas dishes, Spode, Holiday dishes, coffee cups, Christmas mugs, Coffee Bar, Vintage Thermos

Music

Just like the smells. I also love to add to the senses with our Holiday music favorites. We have playlists we’ve made over the years we love to listen to and add to each year.

It’s fun to listen to classic old records too on our record player.

The more senses I can engage, the more it will help turn the moments into wonderful memories.

Christmas Tree, Lake House, Cabin, Cabin Christmas, Log Cabin, Santa, Vintage Christmas, Camp Christmas, Woodland Christmas Tree

Puzzles & Games

One of my kids loves puzzles so I try to have a new one for her each time she’s home.

puzzle, cabin fever, log cabin, hygee, cabin, cottage, lake house

My kids also love to play games together.

Games and puzzles make great gifts. They are a fun idea for hostess gifts or gifts for family friends. You can find some of our favorites HERE.

Family games, snow day, Monopoly

Next up you are heading over to the beautiful blog This Is Simplicite where she’s sharing a modern holiday with a touch of nostalgia.

Here are several tips for taking time to savor the Christmas Season this year and always bringing more meaning and memories into your family and home.

(Affiliate Links are shared for your convenience, read my full disclosure here.

If you are like me, sometimes in the middle of December I start to feel like I’m rushing and not relishing the specialness the Holidays bring. This year I’m making some changes to make things easier, slower and more meaningful.

Add in Peace

  • Light Holiday scented candles. Some of my favorites are from Antique Candle Company.
  • Play peaceful Christmas music. I love all kinds of Christmas music. I shared some of my favorite playlists IN THIS POST. But sometimes, I love to just play instrumental, calming songs, like from THIS ALBUM, to help me slow down and relax.
  • Turn the overhead lights on and just keep the Christmas tree lights, candles and lamps on.

Make Traditions with Yourself

I’m an extroverted introvert. I love social events, but refuel by having time to myself at home. So many things can be group activities during the Holidays, it’s important for me to carve out time just for me.

To help do that I plan activities like wrapping gifts for a morning by myself. I’ll make a special coffee and put on a few Hallmark Christmas movies.

Mr. Coffee Wrapping Presents Coffee

Pick a Signature Cookie

If you are like me I have a Pinterest Christmas Cookie board FULL of yummy ideas and cute treats. But I don’t have time to bake all these cookies and the idea of a full day of baking sounds fun in the planning, but I never can fit it in.

Choose one cookie recipe to be your signature cookie. It’s the one you can be known for, the one you take to the exchanges, the office party and drop at your neighbors door.

Christmas Baking

Set the Table

It takes just minutes to set the table making your meal time even more special. Here are some ways to slow down and help it happen in our busy days.

  • Choose one day a week when everyone can be home for dinner and set the table differently each week of the Season.
  • Let a different family member set the table, each time doing it in their own style.
  • Leave the tablecloth, placemats and centerpieces on the table all season and then just add the dishes, glasses and silverware when it’s time to eat. This saves some time and looks beautiful all day long.
Green Velvet and Buffalo Plaid Christmas Trees and Placesetting

Use the Good Stuff

I am a big believer in using what you have, even Grandma’s good china, silver and crystal. If pieces stay packed away, they never get a chance to bring you lots of joy. It’s worth the possible break or loss to enjoy them and make new memories.

  • When you hand wash special pieces use the time to reflect and pray thanks for the person who gifted them or passed them down to you. Think about special memories together.
  • I change just two words in my thoughts to make a chore feel like a blessing, “have to” turns into “get to”. Hand washing may seem like extra work, but when your mindset changes to how lucky you are to have these heirlooms it becomes special.

One of the greatest gifts I ever got was from my Godfather who gifted me a piece of Spode Christmas Tree china each Christmas. After college when I had my first apartment I also had beautiful Christmas dishes and serving pieces to entertain with over the Holidays.

I shared about this tradition and some favorite options for gifting IN THIS POST.

Plan Ahead

There are things I wish I had figured out when my kids were younger that would have made things easier on me. Somehow traditions celebrated, like St. Nick, would always seem to sneak up on me.

Christmas Presents

Keeping a tradition simple can take the pressure off. Here are just a few traditions I love and can easily plan ahead for that keep my family in excited anticipation.

  • The Friday after Thanksgiving we do a Tree Trimming Evening. Each kid (young or old) has a new wrapped ornament under the tree. Have a sharpie close by to write the year on the back or bottom before hanging up. My kids love going through the ornaments and remembering what made it special that year. Lots of laughs, smiles and stories get told while decorating.
  • We enjoy the Feast of Seven Fishes for our Tree Trimming, but many families enjoy for it’s traditional time of Christmas Eve.
  • Give a new Christmas book for St. Nickolas Day.
  • Schedule a drive to look at Christmas lights. Give everyone a tumbler of hot chocolate to go.
  • The matching PJs phenomenon is not new, I’ve been wearing matching family jammies is 1976! Every Christmas Eve we all unwrap one gift, everyone knows its the new pajamas, but we are just as excited as if it was a surprise.
Feast of the Seven Fishes Shrimp Cocktail

Bedtime Routine

When there are lots of things on the to do list and lots of concerts, parties and movies to watch our nights can get late. It’s important to make sure we get enough sleep.

The best way to help insure that is to have a bedtime routine that we look forward to and helps us calm down.

For my kids, I always read to them at bedtime and we looked forward to it. Never once did they argue about bedtime because they couldn’t wait to hear the stories and see what happened next in a favorite novel.

advent tradition sleeps til christmas bedtime story

Christmas makes a special time for reading because there are books I pull out just at this time of year. So we get to reread favorites and enjoy new ones.

An Advent reading each morning to quietly start my day is essential. This year I am reading The Everlasting Light from She Reads Truth. I gave a copy to each of my older girls and copies of the He Reads Truth version to my boys. I had them wrapped and gifted them to them the morning after Thanksgiving. They were so excited to all be reading the same thing. With a few of mine off at college it’s a fun way to stay connected over the Advent season!

I hope this Christmas Season brings you more peace than ever before and memories and blessings to hold dear all year long!

Not only do I love setting the Thanksgiving table, but also the serving buffet table. Recipes with cranberries from The Northwoods of Wisconsin are the perfect Thanksgiving dishes.

Thanks so much for joining me at White Arrows Home for a peak into Thanksgiving. I’m joining a group of talented bloggers hosted by Chloe of Celebrate & Decorate for this Thanksgiving Tablescape Blog Hop.

(Affiliate links are used for your convience. Read my full disclosure here.)

If you are coming over from Our Crafty Mom welcome to The Northwoods of Wisconsin and our lakeside log cabin home, we call Camp Paradise.

Hammock, Log Home, Cabin, Backyard

When I picture a Thanksgiving dinner it always has lots of people gathered around the table eating family style from bowls being passed around. In reality we’ve never had Thanksgiving that way. Whomever in my family has hosted over the years we always fill our plates buffet style and then sit down.Once everyone is sitting we say grace and begin to eat. Everyone refills their plates by going back to the buffet area.

So when setting the table for Thanksgiving, I also think about the counter, island or table that will serve as the buffet and how it will be decorated.

My starting off point for the decor this year was a beautiful set of dishes I found when thrifting with my mom and my friend Carolyn. We were at a St. Vincent DePaul shop and my mom called me over knowing I would instantly fall in love with these red and white dishes. They had scalloped edges and a pretty pattern. Even though it wasn’t a full set the $40 price tag made it an easy decision. Then when I got to the checkout it ended up being half off! I got all of it for $20!

It’s the perfect pattern to mix and match with my other china patterns.

I used a vintage cranberry box in the center of the table.

Manitowish Waters, the town just north of Mincoqua and part of the Lakeland area, has many cranberry farms. My friend, Becca’s family owns and operates one of them and I’ve been lucky enough to visit during harvest a few times.

I love including local foods into our menus and it works especially well for the cranberries during Thanksgiving. Here are a few delicious cranberry recipes to try.

Cranberry Recipes

Millionaire Cranberry Salad

Now back to the table. You can find more of my favorite cranberry recipes in this Pinterest Board.

he black and red buffalo plaid tablecloth I found at Walmart was the perfect soft compliment to the table. My table is too long for most tablecloths I find in the store, so I often buy two or get creative. I decide to “scrunch” this one up and use it as a runner.

I love mixing reds and oranges in the Fall. For my next layer I added my orange leaf and berry garland.

Then I stuck in some green pumpkins on picks.

I always like to have a touch of plaid so I wove this wired organge, brown and cream plaid ribbon through. The wired edges let me bend it and get it to look like it was flowing through the centerpiece.

I also added in some birch bark pumpkins I found last year at Hobby Lobby. One of the things I love about Hobby Lobby is that their items are often redone a few years in a row. So if you decide you loved a dish or placemat or other item the year before and want more, it most likely will be back again. I always love to have at least 10-12 of any dish or placesetting pieces. Even though we are a family of six, there are often visitors to join us.

I added my rustic turkey to the table on top of a wooden cake stand.

The perfect Father’s Day gift idea is always something that includes doing something together to make memories like this custom dart wall.

Each month I join several other bloggers to make something inspired by something we have pinned to our Pinterest Boards. Thank you so much to Erlene of My Pinterventures for organizing the challenge and tour!

(Affiliate links are used for your convience. Read my full disclosure here.)

It’s time for the May Pin Challenge! The purpose of the Pinterest Challenge is to motivate us to not just pin, but to make it happen! This month’s challenge is about Father’s Day or projects geared towards the men in our lives. The pin I chose was this reclaimed wood dart wall.

See my Pinterest Challenge post from April in this post where I shared inspiration for Mother’s Day.

If there is one thing I’ve learned as a sister of two brothers, a teacher for many years, a wife and a mom to three boys, it’s that the best way to spend time with boys and men is by doing something active. One of my passions is for providing opportunities to make memories. When thinking of an idea for a Father’s Day gift this year, I knew I wanted it to be something active that would give my husband and kids memory making moments together. On Pinterest I came across the idea for a custom dart wall.

Brian had made a barn wood feature wall in our room off the lake. It’s a space I had been trying to decide what to do with. On the adjacent wall is our extra refrigerator where we keep beverages for entertaining on the patio and for filling the cooler to go on the boat. The rest of the room is an extra TV room, a bit of a mud room and a space to hang out.

See more of our lake room in this post from last year’s Summer Home Tour.

When I saw the Pinterest Inspiration photo I knew exactly what would be perfect there!

I used two metal buckets with chalkboard labels I found at Walmart for under $3 a piece to hold the two sets of darts.

Also at Walmart, I found a small hanging chalkboard to use as a score keeper. (As I often do, I was up working on this when the house was all asleep. I’m a night owl. So I used 3M hooks. Tomorrow when I can make noise, I’ll use nails to hang the buckets.)

This was such a simple project and cost under $30. It will provide so many fun times ahead this Father’s Day and after!

These painted wooden spoons are an easy DIY that make a great handmade gift for Mother’s Day or any time throughout the year.

I’m excited to make these painted wooden spoons as part this month’s Pinterest Challenge hosted by Erlene from My Pinterventures.. I was looking on Pinterest for a fun, easy and affordable gift I could make myself for a Mother’s Day gift. These spoons were the perfect idea. They would also make a great hostess gift, birthday gift or teacher thank you.

(Affiliate links are used for your convience. Read my full disclosure here.)

This project was inspired by this Pinterest pin —>> Painted Wooden Spoons.

TO JOIN NEXT MONTH’S #PINTERESTCHALLENGE, CLICK HERE TO SIGN-UP ⇒ May Pinterest Challenge

To start this project I bought a wooden spoon and spatulas.

I found a dish towel and oven mitt that would coordinate with my mom’s kitchen in blue and white. You can choose towels based on a holiday, a theme or to match your mom’s decor.

I decided to paint the handles of the spoons with blue and white to match the dish towel and mitt. I used craft paint we had around the house from other projects. This project didn’t take much paint. I usually use a plastic disposable plate as my paint palette.

Using painters tape, I taped off a pattern and start by painting the blue stripes.

Then after the blue dried, I took off the tape and painted in the white stripes. It took two-three coats on each stripe to get rid of the brush strokes and get good coverage.

You can use only one color, or as many as you want. You can go all the way up the handle or just 2/3 of the way up like I did. Be creative and enjoy knowing you can’t go wrong! They will look beautiful anyway you choose to decorate them.

Whether you are home for a staycation, inside for a rainy day or social distancing, these games are my kids’ favorites for staying active indoors. They provide hours of laughter and fun! These games are fun for all ages. Parents and Grandparents can join in too!

Mini Basketball

My kids love to hang this mini basketball hoop on the back of their closet doors and shoot hoops and hold tournaments.

Snowball Fights

Having mini snowball fights provides lots of fun. My kids set up bases behind couches and cushions. They build forts and divide the snowballs between themselves then start throwing these soft balls around the basement family room.

Hover Soccer

This soccer ball slides across the carpet and stays on the ground. The hockey nets in the activity below work great with this soccer game too or make your own goals with a chair.

Shinny

Shinny (knee hockey) can occupy my kids for hours. They play hockey games one on one or make teams and play until their is a champion.

Spikeball

Spikeball is a favorite outside game that works great inside too. The kids stand in a circle around the bouncy net and follow the rules to bounce the ball almost like a four square game.

Tabletop Ping Pong

Table top ping pong is one of the favorite things our family has purchased. It is an affordable way to have a fun game when you want it out, but can be put away when you are done. We put the net right over our dining room table.

Indoor Badminton

Ever since my oldest son played badminton in gym class, my kids have all loved this game. Indoor badminton gets them moving and the soft birdies won’t break anything.

Kristin Lenz gives recommendations for six books for parents, teachers and mentors of teens. Get a deeper understanding of how teenagers think, be prepared for what’s ahead and get strategies that work.

As the parent of five children from college down to elementary school, I have been thinking, reading and learning about how to be a better mom for over twenty years. Before becoming a parent, I was a fifth grade teacher who, in the same way, was always searching for insight on how to reach my students. I wanted to teach them and impact them in a positive way.

Our local middle school teachers started a book club to read along with parents six books throughout the school year. These selections have been full of amazing information based on the science and research of how teens’ brains work, what they need (lots of sleep!!), why they do what they do, how to communicate with them and when to worry.

Any of these books, even when aimed at a specific gender, are worth reading. You can get something out of it whether you have sons or daughters. I have three boys and two girls, and found valuable information for each of them in all the books.

I think one of the most informative reads is The Teenage Brain. The amount of research being done on the brain is fascinating! This book helps you understand the WHY behind teenage behavior. It gives you a clear understanding of the needs of teenagers to help them develop appropriately and have realistic expectations.

I picked up Real Boys a few years ago and reread it for the book club. Dr. Willam Pollack helps dispel the myths our culture has around boys, such as all boys are aggressive or they shouldn’t cry.

Under Pressure was one of the four books I chose for my White Arrows Home Book Club this month. You can read along with me! At the beginning of each month I share what I’ll be reading. Subscribe here to get the notifications. It was an amazing read, full of insight into the epidemic of stress and anxiety in teenage girls.

Do you know a boy who is underperforming? Is he accused of being lazy? In He’s Not Lazy, Dr. Adam Price explains how many boys are afraid of failure and so don’t even try. Strategies for helping teenage boys believe in themselves and become empowered fill this must read.

Untangled is another book by the author of Under Pressure. Dr. Damour helps give parents a framework to guide their teenaged daughters through seven transitions into adulthood. Parting with Childhood, Contending with Adult Authority, Entering the Romantic World, and Caring for Herself are a few of the stages she discusses.

Ana Homayoun provides strategies developed from her own work as an Academic Counselor to That Crumpled Paper Was Due Last Week. She shares ways to help boys set goals for success, learn how to study, and develop organization skills.
