As the winter chill continues, I love to hibernate inside with a cozy blanket, a hot drink, and a good book.

But winter also offers amazing opportunities to experience adventures outdoors in a way that’s impossible during the warmer months.

The crisp air, snow-covered landscapes, and quieter surroundings create an atmosphere of peace and serenity that’s perfect for getting outside. The best part? You don’t have to spend a dime to enjoy it!

Here are seven fantastic (and free) ways to embrace the winter season and enjoy the fresh air:

1. Go for a Winter Hike

When the snow falls, favorite hiking trails transform into a magical winter wonderland. Put on some sturdy shoes or boots and head out for a hike. The crisp winter air is invigorating, and the scenery is breathtaking. Whether it’s a peaceful walk through the forest or a hike up a snow-dusted hill, there’s something incredibly refreshing about moving your body while taking in the winter sights.

2. Explore a Local Park

Winter parks are often less crowded than during the summer months, giving you a quiet and peaceful environment to enjoy nature. You can take a brisk walk, bring a thermos of tea and enjoy the scenery, or even just sit on a bench and appreciate the stillness around you. Many parks also offer free sledding hills, if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous!

3. Go Snowshoeing, Cross-Country Skiing or Skating

If you live in an area with snow, like I do, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are both great ways to explore your local trails. If you don’t own equipment, many places offer rentals, but there are also free areas where you can simply grab a pair of snowshoes or skis and venture into the snow-covered wilderness. The feeling of gliding through the snow is both peaceful and exhilarating.

In Boulder Junction, here in The Northwoods, they just added a skating ribbon, an ice trail through the woods to ice skate on.

4. Winter Wildlife Watching

Winter is an excellent time to watch wildlife as animals often forage for food during the colder months. Grab your binoculars (or just your eyes) and visit a nearby wildlife preserve or even a local park. Keep an eye out for birds, squirrels, deer, and even winter wildlife like foxes or snowshoe hares. The quiet of winter makes it easier to spot animals as they move about their natural habitats.

We love walking through the woods or taking our snowmobile around our property and look for tracks guessing which animals made them. It’s amazing to see how active the wildlife is even in the cold.

5. Take a Photography Walk

Winter offers a unique landscape that’s perfect for photography. Whether it’s the subtle hues of a snowy forest, the stark contrast of bare trees against a bright blue sky, or icicles hanging from branches, winter is full of photo-worthy moments.

You don’t need to be a professional photographer to capture the beauty around you—just take a walk with your phone or camera and see what catches your eye.

6. Stargazing on a Clear Night

Clear winter nights are perfect for stargazing. The cold air typically brings clearer skies, and with fewer clouds, the stars are brighter and more visible.

You don’t need a telescope to enjoy the night sky—just lie back on a blanket, grab a warm jacket, and watch the constellations twinkle overhead.

You can even use a stargazing app on your phone to identify constellations and planets.

Night Cabin

7. Take a Winter Bike Ride

Biking isn’t just a warm-weather activity. If you have a mountain bike or one with wide tires, you can enjoy a winter ride, even on snow-covered paths or trails.

The fresh air, crunch of snow beneath your tires, and the peacefulness of the winter landscape will make for a memorable ride. Just be sure to bundle up and take safety precautions when riding on slippery surfaces.

The Winter also opportunities to improve our physical and mental health. Embracing the outdoors in winter doesn’t just lift spirits—it can also have a lasting positive impact on our well-being. So, whether taking a brisk walk or skiing through snow-covered trails, here’s why getting outside in winter is a must:

1. Boosts Your Immune System

Exposing your body to cold weather in moderation can actually help strengthen your immune system. Studies have shown that being outside in cooler temperatures can increase the production of white blood cells, which help your body fight off illnesses.

Regular outdoor activity in winter, even something as simple as walking, can lower your chances of getting sick by improving overall immune function.

Bernese Mountain Dog

2. Increases Vitamin D Levels

During the winter months, many people struggle with a lack of sunlight, which can lead to lower levels of vitamin D—a vital nutrient for bone health, immune support, and mood regulation.

By spending time outside in the natural light, even on cloudy days, your body can absorb more vitamin D. This can help you maintain healthy bones, regulate your mood, and keep your energy levels up, even when the days are shorter.

3. Improves Mental Health

Being outside in winter offers numerous mental health benefits. Exposure to natural light helps to regulate your circadian rhythm, which is essential for maintaining good sleep patterns.

In addition, outdoor exercise releases endorphins, the “feel-good” chemicals that reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. The fresh air and peaceful surroundings can provide a much-needed mental break from daily stressors, helping to clear your mind and improve your mood.

When the sun is out I even move my workouts outside.

4. Enhances Cardiovascular Health

Cold-weather activities like hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, or even walking through the neighborhood all help to get your heart pumping. Exercising in winter challenges your body in a different way than warmer-weather activities.

The cold temperature forces your body to work harder to regulate its internal temperature, giving your cardiovascular system a boost. Regular outdoor exercise during winter can improve your heart health, increase circulation, and improve overall fitness.

5. Promotes Better Sleep

Getting outside in the winter can help you sleep better at night. Natural light exposure, even in smaller doses, helps to reset your internal clock. This can lead to deeper, more restful sleep. Plus, outdoor activities tire your muscles and relax your body, which can make falling asleep easier and more peaceful.

6. Strengthens Your Lungs

Winter air is crisp and often dry, which can be a little harder to breathe for some. However, outdoor exercise in winter can actually help to strengthen your lungs.

Cold, dry air can stimulate deeper breathing, helping to increase lung capacity over time. For those with respiratory conditions like asthma, fresh outdoor air can help reduce inflammation and clear up congestion, as long as it’s not too cold or harsh.

7. Boosts Your Energy Levels

Spending time outside in winter can give you a natural energy boost. The cold air helps to stimulate circulation, making you feel more awake and alert. Plus, engaging in outdoor activities like walking or skiing releases endorphins, which can improve your mood and provide an overall sense of well-being. The increased blood flow can also help shake off feelings of fatigue, leaving you feeling refreshed and energized.

8. Improves Balance and Coordination

Winter activities often involve navigating slippery or uneven terrain, which can help improve your balance and coordination. Walking on snow-covered paths, hiking up icy hills, or participating in winter sports all require a certain level of agility and control. Over time, this can strengthen the muscles responsible for balance, improving overall stability and reducing the risk of falls and injuries.

9. Encourages Social Interaction

In the winter months, many people tend to huddle inside, but winter offers a unique chance to connect with others outside. Whether it’s walking with a friend, joining a local snowshoeing group, or simply enjoying a public event in your area, being outdoors can foster social connections.

Social interaction is essential for mental health, and spending time with others while being active outdoors can help strengthen relationships and increase feelings of happiness and belonging.

A favorite account to follow and encourage time outdoors is 1000 Hours Outside.

10. Increases Mindfulness and Presence

Winter provides a unique setting for mindfulness. The quiet, stillness of snowy landscapes or the beauty of winter sunsets can help you focus on the present moment. Whether you’re out for a walk or simply sitting outside, being surrounded by nature encourages a sense of peace and mindfulness that’s hard to achieve indoors. This practice of being present can reduce stress, increase self-awareness, and improve emotional well-being.

Winter doesn’t have to be a time for hibernation. In fact, it can be an excellent season to improve your health, boost your mood, and enhance your physical fitness.

By embracing the cold and stepping outside, you can enjoy the fresh winter air while reaping the many physical and mental health benefits that nature provides. So, bundle up, get outside, and take full advantage of what winter has to offer!

Winter brings its own unique charm—crisp air, snowy landscapes, and cozy moments spent indoors.

But it also offers a perfect opportunity to step outside your usual routine and try something new.

Whether you’re looking for a fun family activity, a way to spark your creativity, or just want to shake up your winter season, here are 10 creative ideas to make the most of the colder months that are both fun and cozy.

1. Go Ice Skating

Ice skating is a time-honored winter tradition that’s perfect for anyone looking to embrace the chilly season with a little movement.

Whether you choose to glide across an outdoor rink beneath twinkling holiday lights or warm up indoors at a local arena, ice skating offers a unique blend of fun and fitness.

It’s a great way to work out without feeling like you’re exercising—burning calories, strengthening muscles, and improving balance all while enjoying the winter air (or cozy indoor warmth).

backyard hockey, ice skating, northwoods living

Whether you’re a seasoned skater or a complete beginner, it’s an activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels.

Plus, many rinks offer rentals, so you don’t even need to own skates to join in the fun.

So, grab your friends, your family and hit the ice for a memorable winter outing!

2. Build a Snowman (or Snow Sculptures)

When snowflakes start falling, there’s no better way to embrace the season than by heading outside to build a snowman or get creative with snow sculptures.

Gather your family, friends, or even neighbors for an impromptu snowman-building contest, or challenge each other to create imaginative designs like snow animals, castles, or abstract art.

You can find some fun ideas on my Winter Pinterest Board.

Build a Snowman

Building a snowman is more than just rolling snow into big balls—it’s a chance to let your imagination run wild, experimenting with different snow textures, props for eyes, noses, and scarves, and even adding personality to your frosty creations.

If you’re in a place that doesn’t often get snow, it’s a nostalgic way to make the most of the winter weather.

3. Sledding

Sledding is one of those classic winter activities that never loses its charm, no matter how old you get.

The thrill of speeding down a snowy hill with the cold wind in your face and a sense of freedom in your chest is something that stays with you.

Whether you’re using a traditional sled, a plastic toboggan, or even an old-fashioned wooden sled, there’s nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of the descent.

Vintage Sled, Vintage Blankets, Buffalo Plaid, Cabin

And it’s not just about the ride itself; sledding is also about the laughter, the occasional tumble, and the pure joy of being outdoors in the winter.

Find a hill with a nice, gentle slope for the kids or go for a more daring incline if you’re after a more adventurous experience.

It’s a simple activity that’s easy to do with family or friends, and the best part is that the fun never seems to end—you’ll be racing up the hill just to go down again and again!

4. Hot Cocoa Bar

After a day spent braving the cold, there’s nothing better than warming up with a cup of hot cocoa.

But why settle for a plain mug of cocoa when you can set up an entire hot chocolate bar at home?

Create your own winter wonderland of toppings and mix-ins, like whipped cream, colorful marshmallows, crushed peppermint, chocolate shavings, or even a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg.

Hot Chocolate Bar, Log Cabin, Cabin

For a more indulgent experience, add caramel sauce, toffee bits, or mini candy canes for extra flavor.

Set up the bar with various types of hot chocolate—think dark chocolate, white chocolate, or spiced cocoa—for everyone to customize their drink just the way they like it.

It’s the perfect way to spend a cozy evening indoors with loved ones, sipping on sweet treats while you watch a holiday movie, read a book, or just chat by the fire.

This activity is also great for entertaining guests, making it a festive and interactive way to warm up during the colder months.

5. Winter Hiking or Snowshoeing

Winter hiking or snowshoeing offers a peaceful and serene way to explore nature during the colder months.

While many people think of hiking as a spring or summer activity, winter transforms the outdoors into a breathtaking landscape of quiet beauty.

If you’ve never tried snowshoeing before, it’s an easy-to-learn activity that allows you to walk on snow-covered trails without sinking into the powder, making it ideal for areas with deep snow.

Snowshoes

For those who prefer a more traditional hike, many trails are still accessible in winter, providing a crisp, calm atmosphere and fewer crowds.

Winter hiking offers a chance to spot wildlife in its natural habitat, experience the quiet stillness of a snowy forest, and enjoy the beauty of frost-covered trees or frozen lakes.

Plus, the cold air can be invigorating, making you feel like you’re truly connected to the outdoors.

Layer up, grab your boots or snowshoes, and discover the winter wonderland that’s waiting just outside your door.

6. Take a Winter Photography Walk

Winter landscapes are stunning and can offer beautiful photo opportunities. Bundle up, take your camera or phone, explore your surroundings while documenting the beauty of the season.

Try making it a challenge with family or friends inviting them to join in and share their favorite winter moments.

Winter Photography

You can create daily or weekly prompts, such as “Best Snowy Landscape,” “Coziest Winter Setup,” or “Funniest Winter Moment.”

Have everyone share their pics online or in a group chat.

7. Bake Treats

Winter is the ultimate time to indulge in baking, whether you’re a seasoned pro in the kitchen or just getting started.

The chilly weather and cozy atmosphere of your kitchen make it the perfect setting for whipping up some sweet or savory treats.

Gingerbread cookies, spiced cakes, and hearty pies are staples, but you can also experiment with new recipes, like hot cocoa brownies or cinnamon rolls.

The aroma of freshly baked goods filling the house is enough to make anyone feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Pretzel Sea Salt Cookies

Baking is not only a comforting solo activity, but it’s also a wonderful way to spend time with family or friends.

Share your delicious creations with neighbors, or deliver a festive batch of cookies to loved ones as a thoughtful gift. Stop in White Arrows the Shop to find the perfect plate for gifting on from our Dish Bar.

If you prefer, you can keep your treats all to yourself to savor throughout the season—just be sure to have a cup of hot cocoa or coffee on hand to enjoy with them!

8. Go Skiing or Snowboarding

Downhill skiing is one of my favorite activities!

If you live near a ski resort—or if you’re planning a winter getaway—skiing or snowboarding is one of the most thrilling ways to experience the winter season.

Whether you’re a seasoned expert carving down the slopes or a beginner eager to learn, these high-energy sports offer an incredible way to make the most of the winter months.

Skiing and snowboarding aren’t just about the sport itself—they’re also about the scenery.

Picture yourself gliding down a snow-covered mountain with panoramic views of snowcapped peaks and pristine forests.

Skiing in Montana

The adrenaline rush from speeding down the slopes is unmatched, and for those looking to try something new, ski resorts often offer lessons, making it easy for first-timers to get the hang of it.

Whether you’re into powdery runs or thrilling terrain parks, skiing and snowboarding are perfect for creating lasting memories on the mountain.

9. Have a Winter Picnic

Who says picnics are only for the summer?

With a little preparation, a winter picnic can be an unforgettable experience.

Bundle up in cozy layers, pack a thermos of hot soup, and head to a scenic park or even a snowy field for a winter wonderland picnic.

The crisp, cold air makes the experience feel special, and there’s something magical about sitting outdoors with snow gently falling around you.

Picnic with Skotch Kooler

Pack hearty foods that will warm you from the inside out, like stews, sandwiches, or hot baked goods, and don’t forget your favorite hot drinks—whether it’s a thermos of cocoa or mulled cider.

For extra comfort, bring along blankets or insulated cushions to sit on, and be sure to bring a thermos or two for something warm to sip while you relax.

A winter picnic is a peaceful way to embrace the cold, connect with nature, and enjoy a delicious meal with friends or family.

10. Create a Winter Wonderland Indoors

Even if the weather outside is frightful, you can still create a magical atmosphere inside your home.

Turn your living room into a cozy winter wonderland with twinkling fairy lights, paper snowflakes, and winter greenery like pine boughs.

Add some soft throws and pillows to create a warm, inviting space, perfect for curling up with a cup of tea or a good book.

You can also get creative with seasonal decorations like homemade wreaths or candles in wintery scents.

Winter Decor- Hot Chocolate

The key is to embrace the season’s beauty indoors by incorporating textures, colors, and lighting that evoke the magic of winter.

Whether you host friends for a gathering or simply enjoying the ambiance with your family, a cozy winter home can make the colder months feel extra special.

11. Host a Winter Craft Party

A winter craft party is a wonderful way to bring friends and family together during the colder months.

Get creative with activities that fit the season, like making DIY holiday cards, decorating ornaments, or crafting homemade snow globes.

You can even try your hand at knitting scarves or making felt snowflakes.

Whether you’re crafting holiday decor, creating personalized gifts, or just having fun with seasonal projects, it’s the perfect opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones while being productive.

Make sure to set up a cozy space with plenty of supplies, a warm drink station, and some festive music to get everyone into the spirit.

Not only will you leave with a sense of accomplishment, but you’ll also have unique handmade items that will add a personal touch to your home or make thoughtful gifts.

12. Make Homemade Candles with Winter Scents

There’s something so comforting about lighting a candle on a cold winter night, and making your own adds a personal touch to your home decor.

Winter scents like cinnamon, pine, and vanilla evoke cozy memories and can help you transform your space into a relaxing haven.

Creating homemade candles is surprisingly easy and can be a fun, creative project for a solo afternoon or a group activity.

Nautical Candleholder
Nautical Candle Holders

Choose your favorite scent or blend a few to create your own signature fragrance.

You can even add dried herbs, spices, or glitter to make your candles extra special.

If you’re looking for a meaningful holiday gift, homemade candles are an excellent idea—they’re thoughtful, personalized, and always appreciated.

Whether you keep them for yourself or share them with loved ones, DIY candles are a beautiful way to bring warmth to your home.

13. Start a Winter Journal

Winter is the perfect time to slow down, reflect, and capture the essence of the season in a journal. Whether you’re a writer, an artist, or simply someone who enjoys documenting life’s moments, starting a winter journal can be a deeply rewarding experience.

Use the pages to jot down your winter adventures—whether you’re hiking through snowy trails, baking seasonal treats, or enjoying a peaceful evening by the fire.

You can also sketch winter scenes, write down cozy recipes, or capture thoughts and reflections on the season.

Great Day to Start Journaling

A winter journal is a great way to embrace the stillness of the colder months, and it provides a wonderful way to look back on your memories in years to come.

Plus, it’s a perfect way to channel creativity and stay mindful during this quieter time of year.

14. Winter Stargazing

On clear winter nights, the sky is often at its most breathtaking. Bundle up in your warmest clothes and head outside for some winter stargazing.

The crisp, cold air makes the stars appear sharper and brighter, and with the lack of light pollution in some areas, you may be able to spot constellations more easily.

This is the perfect time to observe the wonders of the night sky—whether it’s a meteor shower, the Big Dipper, or the Orion constellation.

Stargazing also gives you a sense of connection to the vastness of the universe and can be a meditative experience.

Night Cabin

Find a quiet, open space with minimal light interference, and spend time marveling at the celestial beauty above.

Winter stargazing is a peaceful, awe-inspiring activity that brings a sense of calm and wonder, perfect for unwinding after a long day.

15. Host a Game Night

When the weather keeps you indoors, a game night can bring everyone together for some fun and laughter.

You can enjoy trivia, charades, or even play classic board games like Monopoly or Scrabble.

Here’s a post with some of our favorite family games.

For a winter twist, you can create your own themed trivia questions, or set up a movie or song guessing game.

Kristin Lenz

Game nights are a great way to connect with loved ones, and they also helps lift your spirits during the colder months.

Make it extra festive by offering winter snacks and cozy drinks, and encourage everyone to wear their comfiest sweaters or even winter pajamas!

16. DIY Hot Toddy or Cocktail Tasting

Winter is the perfect time to experiment with new drinks, especially those that warm you up from the inside out.

Hot toddies, mulled wine, and seasonal cocktails are perfect for cozying up with friends or unwinding after a busy day.

Organize a DIY cocktail or hot toddy tasting with a few different recipes, and get creative by adding various spices, fruits, or herbs to experiment with flavors.

Buffalo Plaid, Hudson Bay Blanket, Pendleton, Baileys, Roaring Fire, Fireplace, Cozy

For example, try a cinnamon-spiced hot toddy or a cranberry-orange sangria. Set up a tasting station with all your ingredients and enjoy sampling your creations.

This is a great way to add a fun twist to your winter evenings, and if you’re looking for a thoughtful holiday gift, you can bottle your custom cocktails for friends to enjoy.

17. Create a Winter-Themed Scavenger Hunt

Winter-themed scavenger hunts are a fantastic way to get outside, explore your neighborhood, and engage in a little friendly competition.

Whether you’re hunting for pinecones, snowflakes, holiday decorations, or even specific animals like winter birds, a scavenger hunt adds an element of adventure to any winter outing.

If you live in an area with snow, you could even hide little treasures or clues beneath the snow for extra fun.

lake cabin in the snow

Create clues that lead participants from one item to the next, or turn it into a race for who can find everything first.

For an indoor option, you could hide small winter-themed objects like snow globes or holiday ornaments around the house.

This activity is not only entertaining but encourages participants to embrace the winter season by exploring the beauty around them.

18. Make a DIY Snow Globe

Craft your own personalized snow globes using jars, mini figurines like pine trees and snowmen, glitter, and glycerin.

snow globe

This is a great activity for kids or a fun craft night with friends.

19. Create a Winter Soundtrack Playlist

What’s a winter day without the right soundtrack?

Curate a winter playlist that suits your mood, whether it’s peaceful and cozy, upbeat and festive, or nostalgic with classic winter tunes.

Share it with others or use it as your soundtrack while you relax at home or play it during your activities and on winter outings.

20. Build an Ice Lantern

Create your own winter lanterns by filling balloons with water, freeze them outdoors, and then pop the balloon to reveal a beautiful, translucent ice lantern. Then add a candle inside. The result is a glowing, icy lantern perfect for lighting up your front yard or decorating your home with wintery beauty.

21. Plan a “Staycation” Winter Retreat

If you’re not traveling this winter, make your home a winter retreat.

Turn your living space into a cozy retreat with activities like an indoor spa day or a movie marathon.

Stone Fireplace

Enjoy hot drinks, and even take virtual tours of snowy destinations.

A “staycation” is the perfect excuse to relax and enjoy the comforts of home.

22. Make Winter-Themed Terrariums

Bring a little nature indoors by crafting winter-themed terrariums.

Fill a glass container with faux snow, miniature winter figurines, and tiny pinecones or branches.

It’s a low-maintenance decoration that adds a touch of winter magic to your home—and can be a great gift idea for someone special to lift their winter blues.

23. Go on a “Winter Beach” Adventure

If you live near a coast, consider taking a walk along the beach in winter. The landscape will look entirely different in the cold, with dramatic waves, sea foam, and maybe even a beach fire!

24. Try Winter Cooking Classes (or DIY)

Try making hearty stews, warming curries, or classic comfort foods like pot pie or fondue.

Winter is the perfect time to experiment with hearty, comforting meals.

Try out winter-inspired cooking, like slow-cooked stews, curries, or classic comfort foods like pot pie and fondue.

Consider joining an online cooking class or simply experiment with winter dishes from different cultures.

Host a cozy, home-cooked meal with friends or family.

It’s the perfect time to start a Cookbook Club, like a book club, but where you read and cook through cookbooks, meeting once a month to discuss and share a favorite recipe.

These activities will surely inspire your creativity and bring even more magic to the winter months!

In 2013, we made the exciting decision to move to Camp Paradise, our lake house, full time. We became the second owners of a charming full log cabin located in the serene Northwoods of Wisconsin. The original owners had designed and built it as a vacation retreat, and we were thrilled to continue its legacy.

Log Cabin

In the early years while vacationing at Camp Paradise, our five kids would all pile into the bunk room to sleep. Those were some of the most precious moments—full of laughter, stories, and memories. I still fondly recall sitting in the rocking chair in the corner, reading to them long into the night as they snuggled into their cozy, camp-striped blankets before drifting off to sleep.

When we moved North permanently, our kids were also growing up and wanting more space to themselves, so the two older kids moved to the two available rooms upstairs.

You can read more about our decision to move in this post.

The kids were spreading out into the house and more guests were starting to come and visit.

There’s an often said phrase around our area, that you will never know how many friends you have until you own a lake home. We loved having friends and family come visit and were always extra excited when grandparents would start coming for longer stays as they retired.

We started dreaming about having a designated space for guests as well as more room for our kids as they grew.

As often happens with Brian and me, a little spark of an idea becomes fun to plan. Each week we have a weekly date night and our conversations turn to dreams. Our guest room idea blossomed into a full guest house.

See how we keep date night possible and a priority in this post.

Why Build a Guest House?

We envisioned a guest house that would offer:

  • Privacy for Guests: A place where guests could enjoy their own space while still being close enough to the main cabin to share meals and activities.
  • Extra Room for Gatherings: We wanted to have an extra space that would provide a gathering area near the guest rooms.
  • Aesthetic Harmony: We wanted the guest house to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings and the main cabin’s rustic aesthetic, so it would feel like a true extension of our home.

We also made a list of all the things we wished our main house had space for:

  • extra garage space as our kids all started driving
  • workout room
  • designated guest room that can stay clean and ready
  • extra bedrooms for older kids

Then I started sketching, searching the Internet and Pinterest for ideas inside and out.

Step 1: Planning and Design

The first step in building our guest house was determining the size, layout, and functionality of the space. We wanted something cozy yet functional, and ideally, it would not only serve as a place for sleeping and the sitting area, but also laundry rooms and bathrooms. We also officially added more garage space and a workout room on the dream list.

Here’s how we approached the design:

  • Size and Layout: We decided on a two story cabin with living space above and garages below, a style that would fit within the existing footprint of our property. There would be a simple wet bar, a comfy living area, two full bathroom rooms upstairs, and cozy bedrooms seemed like the perfect balance.
  • Material Choices: To maintain the rustic charm of the main cabin, we chose half log siding (even though our main house is full log) and natural stone accents for the exterior. So the look is the same. Lots of windows to let in natural light offer beautiful views of the surrounding nature. We included three dormers to coordinate with the two on the main cabin.

I took my sketch to a local designer and had them draw out the floor plan.

Step 2: Building the Guest House

Once we had a clear vision and design, it was time to begin construction. We hired a contractor, but we were still very hands-on with the process.

  • Foundation and Framing: The foundation was the first step, and because we’re located in an area with cold winters, we went with a slab foundation that would keep the building insulated and secure. Once that was in place, the framing went up quickly.
  • Interior Work: Inside, we kept things simple and added the cozy with our decor and rustic cabinetry for the wet bar and bathrooms. I knew I wanted plaid carpet going up the stairs and in the main living area.

Step 3: Furnishing the Guest House

Once the structure was built, it was time to make it feel like home. We wanted the guest house to feel both stylish and comfortable, with all the little touches that make a space inviting. Here’s what we did:

  • Rustic Furniture: We went for a blend of vintage and rustic pieces—think wooden bed frames, a reclaimed wood table for puzzles and games, and plush, soft seating that would keep guests relaxed and comfortable.
  • Cozy Bedding and Textiles: Soft bedding with down comforters, wool throws, and plenty of pillows made the bedrooms feel like a cozy retreat. We want guests to feel like they are staying in a special place, with plenty of blankets to snuggle under.
  • Decor: The decor incorporates vintage elements like old paddles and snow shoes, natural elements like a wood backsplash, artwork, and lamps to add a warm light in the mornings and evenings. We also include little touches like fresh flowers or potted plants to bring the outdoors in when people come to stay.

Step 4: Making It Functional for Guests

While aesthetics were important, we also wanted to ensure the guest house was fully functional. Here are some features we incorporated:

  • Wet Bar: We included a small wet bar with a mini fridge, sink, and microwave so guests could feel self-sufficient, but would still come to the main house for meals. A kuerig and self serve coffee station is on the bar to enjoy morning coffee or cozy drinks anytime.
  • Bathrooms: The guest house has a two full bathrooms, one with a walk-in shower, and one with a shower tub that blend comfort with style.
  • Wi-Fi and Technology: We ensured that there was reliable Wi-Fi throughout the guest house as well as a television in the sitting area.

Step 5: The Finishing Touches

Finally, it was time for the finishing touches. From hanging artwork to installing lighting, we took extra care to make sure the space felt welcoming and lived-in. We filled the shelves with books, puzzles and games for guests to enjoy.

Create a Gallery Wall From a Thrift Store Book

For the lower level, we split the garages into a double garage and a single divided by a little porch and entry way to the upstairs.

The single garage we fit out for our workout room. Our family loves to workout together and its one of the most used spaces.

Adding a glass garage door on the workout room was one of the best decisions as it not only lets in a lot of natural light, but gives extra energy to workouts being able to see out. On great weather days we open the door up and use the inside space and the driveway.

Home Gym Workout Room Spin Bike

We also plumbed this space for a possible future kitchen in case we ever need a wheelchair accessible living area in the future. We would be able to make this workout space living space.

Step 6: Welcoming Our First Guests

After months of hard work, we were thrilled to finally welcome our first guests to the space. It was everything we had dreamed of—cozy, functional, and a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern convenience. Our friends and family loved it, and it’s quickly become a favorite getaway spot.

Tips for Building Your Own Guest House

If you’re considering building your own guest house or cabin retreat, here are a few tips based on our experience:

  • Plan for Functionality: Think about the flow of the space and what your guests will need. Will they need a full kitchen, or just a small kitchenette? Will they come for a weekend stay or an extended vacation?
  • Sustainability is Key: Consider using eco-friendly materials and renewable energy sources to make your guest house more sustainable.
  • Stay True to Your Style: Whether you’re going for rustic, modern, or minimalist, make sure the guest house reflects your personal style and complements the main house and surrounding nature.
  • Budget for Unexpected Costs: Construction always comes with surprises, so be sure to leave some room in your budget for unexpected expenses.
Guest House

Final Thoughts

Building a guest house at our cabin has been one of the most rewarding projects we’ve undertaken. It’s not only provided us with more space to host family and friends, but it’s also given us a tranquil retreat that blends perfectly with the surrounding nature. Whether you’re dreaming of a cozy getaway or simply want more space for guests, a guest house is a fantastic addition that can transform your home.

We know many more memories are ahead for this beautiful space.

The Joy of Cranberries: A Superfood for the Season

Cranberries are one of the few fruits native to North America, and they have certainly earned their place as a beloved holiday staple. Whether they’re swirling in a tangy sauce at Thanksgiving dinner, adding a burst of color to a winter salad, or starring in a refreshing juice, cranberries offer a delightful mix of tartness, flavor, and nutrition. But beyond their seasonal popularity, cranberries are a superfood with a fascinating history and a wealth of health benefits. But truly these vibrant red berries deserve a spot in our kitchens all year long.

In the Cranberries

I honestly never thought too much about cranberries until the past several years. I knew I loved a glass of cranberry juice, munching on Craisins and adding cranberries in recipes, but never thought deeper.

After moving to the Northwoods of Wisconsin, where there a several cranberry farms in Manitowish Waters, I became so curious, interested and fascinated.

There are farms that open up to tours each year and offer field trips to students.

I’ve been blessed to get some behind the scenes tours and events at one of the farms owned by a friend whose husband is a fourth generation farmer at Bartling’s Manitowish Cranberry Company. They are a proud grower/owner with Ocean Spray. They don’t offer public tours, but have an amazing website full of photos, history and information- a cranberry 101.

Bartling's Cranberries in Manitowish Waters

Other areas in the Northwoods have farms as well and Eagle River celebrates with a large Cranberry Festival the first weekend in October each year.

The History of Cranberries

Cranberries have a rich history in North America, where they’ve been cultivated for centuries. Native American tribes were the first to recognize the berry’s medicinal and nutritional properties. They used cranberries for everything from treating urinary tract infections to dyeing fabrics, and even in making pemmican—a high-energy mixture of berries, meat, and fat used by hunters and travelers. Early European settlers adopted these uses, and cranberries soon became a key part of the American diet, especially during the fall harvest.

Today, the United States and Canada are the primary producers of cranberries, with Wisconsin and Massachusetts leading the way in cultivation. The distinctive bogs where cranberries grow are flooded during harvest season, creating the picturesque “ocean” of red berries that many of us associate with cranberry farms.

Health Benefits of Cranberries

Cranberries are more than just a festive fruit—they’re packed with nutrients that can support your health in a variety of ways.

1. Rich in Antioxidants: Cranberries are a powerhouse of antioxidants, particularly vitamin C and flavonoids, which help to combat oxidative stress in the body. Antioxidants protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, contributing to overall health and reducing the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

2. Urinary Tract Health: One of the most well-known health benefits of cranberries is their role in preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs). Cranberries contain compounds called proanthocyanidins that prevent harmful bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract, reducing the likelihood of infection. While they’re not a cure for UTIs, cranberries can be a helpful preventative measure.

3. Heart Health: The antioxidants in cranberries, along with their fiber and anti-inflammatory properties, can contribute to heart health by improving blood pressure, reducing cholesterol levels, and lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Some studies have shown that regular consumption of cranberries may help reduce the buildup of plaque in the arteries, which is linked to atherosclerosis.

4. Gut Health: Cranberries are rich in dietary fiber, which is essential for digestive health. Fiber promotes healthy digestion, aids in regular bowel movements, and supports a balanced gut microbiome. Additionally, the natural compounds in cranberries may help prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in the gut, contributing to overall digestive wellness.

5. Immune Support: Cranberries are high in vitamin C, which plays a crucial role in strengthening the immune system. Vitamin C helps to fight off infections, reduce inflammation, and support healthy skin. This makes cranberries a great addition to your diet, especially during cold and flu season.

Creative Ways to Enjoy Cranberries

While cranberries are most commonly used in sauces and baked goods during the holiday season, they can be enjoyed in a variety of ways throughout the year. Here are some ideas for incorporating more cranberries into your meals:

1. Fresh Cranberry Sauce: Homemade cranberry sauce is easy to make and much fresher than the canned variety. Simply simmer fresh cranberries with sugar, orange zest, and a touch of cinnamon until the berries burst and the sauce thickens. This vibrant sauce can be served as a topping for turkey, roasted vegetables, or even yogurt.

2. Cranberry Smoothies: Add a handful of fresh or frozen cranberries to your morning smoothie for a tart, refreshing twist. Pair them with other fruits like bananas, oranges, and strawberries, and blend with yogurt or almond milk for a delicious, nutrient-packed breakfast or snack.

3. Cranberry Relish or Chutney: For a more savory take on cranberries, make a relish or chutney by combining cranberries with onions, ginger, garlic, and vinegar. This can be served alongside meats like chicken, pork, or lamb to add a sweet and tangy kick.

4. Dried Cranberries: Dried cranberries are a convenient snack that you can toss into trail mixes, salads, or oatmeal. Be mindful to choose unsweetened dried cranberries, as many commercial varieties are packed with added sugar. Alternatively, you can make your own dried cranberries at home by dehydrating fresh berries in an oven or dehydrator.

5. Cranberry Baked Goods: Cranberries add a burst of tart flavor to muffins, cakes, and cookies. For a festive touch, try adding them to classic recipes like banana bread, scones, or shortbread cookies. Their tangy bite contrasts wonderfully with the sweetness of sugar or chocolate chips.

6. Cranberry Cocktails: Cranberries are the perfect ingredient for holiday cocktails. A splash of cranberry juice can elevate a classic vodka cranberry, or you can make a cranberry mojito with fresh berries, mint, lime, and rum. For a warm winter drink, mix cranberry juice with a splash of cinnamon and serve it hot with a cinnamon stick garnish.

Where to Find Cranberries

Fresh cranberries are typically available in the fall and early winter months, so be sure to stock up during this time. You can find them in most grocery stores, often in the produce section. If fresh cranberries aren’t available, frozen cranberries are a great alternative and can be used in most recipes.

For dried cranberries, look for options with minimal added sugar or try making your own. Many health food stores also offer organic or unsweetened dried cranberries. You can even find cranberry extracts and supplements if you’re interested in their health benefits, particularly for urinary tract health.

Cranberries are more than just a holiday treat—they’re a powerhouse fruit with a host of health benefits and endless culinary possibilities. Whether you’re enjoying them fresh, dried, or juiced, cranberries bring a bright, tart flavor to your dishes while supporting your health in a variety of ways.

Plan a visit to the Northwoods of Wisconsin in the Fall around the cranberry harvest and take a tour. Stock up on fresh berries to take home to put in the freezer to pull out for recipes, to add antioxidants to your wellness routine and to add a festive touch and a little extra cheer to your decor.

Part of Northwoods Living is embracing Winter and all the season brings like cozy nights.

In The Northwoods of Wisconsin cold weather lasts a long time. I get asked, “How can you stand it?” “How can you live there all Winter?” We can because we embrace it and find ways to love and appreciate and actually look forward to it.

One way is by soaking up all the coziness and making evening rituals that help us relax, unwind and reconnect. We make every night feel special. It doesn’t take much, mostly what it takes is attitude and shifting how you think. You can take something that feels frustrating and turn it into something amazing!

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

Baths, Showers, Hot Tubs & Saunas

One of the things I try to keep a priority is to partake in calming activities that keep me uplifted and restored. I love to take detoxing baths a few times a week in the evenings with a candle burning and soft music playing.

Our whole family enjoys our hot tub. It’s a great spot to relax in, soak sore muscles and sit and talk in. We’ve had a lot of great conversations at the end of the day in the hot tub.

Land's End Blue Swim Suit Tankini and Skirt

In the mornings I take a cold shower (so many benefits to this- I have a post coming soon!), but in the evenings I take a warm shower with my favorite bath scrub and gel. They smell like a spa! The scrub on my feet once a week, keeps my feet exfoliated and in great shape.

Here’s a post I wrote about How to Create a Relaxing Spa Bathroom.

Master Bathroom, Bathroom, Tiled Shower, Shower Stool, Antler Print, Painted Fox Home, Log Home, Log Cabin, Glass Block Wall

Hydrating

Have hydrating products for my skin and lips is important too.

We sell great self care products in my Shop. We sell Pendleton yoga mats, beautiful water bottles to encourage hydration, books, lip scrubs and balms, candles and so much more. SHOP HERE.

I consciously try to stay hydrated all the time, but especially in Winter. I have a few helpful ways I do that. One is to use a pretty vintage glass, every time I walk in the kitchen I take a drink from it and refill.

Bedding

One of our favorite rituals as soon as the temperatures drop in the Fall is to switch into our flannel sheets and cozy bedding. See more of our bedroom in THIS POST.

Cabin Bedroom Decor

Robes & Pajamas

We are like the Brady Bunch around here. Remember how they always put on a robe? We love to throw them on too after a bath or shower. We also love great pajamas.

There are some nights where we aren’t hungry for dinner. We do a workout, sauna, shower then get in jammies to curl up by the fire to read and talk for the rest of evening.

And if we aren’t enjoying a glass of wine, we love to have coffee. I sometimes like coffee better in the evenings. I drink Decaf all the time, so it doesn’t affect my sleeping. I switched several years ago.

Treats

A cozy treat in the evenings is a great way to end the day. My husband is a sweets guy, always growing up in a house that had desserts. I grew up not having desserts, so it still feels weird to me that he (and all my kids!) look at me after dinner with big grins and ask what’s for dessert.

Most nights it’s their favorite cookies, Tate’s Chocolate Chip Cookies, because they are so easy to have on hand and they taste so good. They taste exactly like the chocolate chip cookies my husband’s grandma was famous for!

A great pair of slippers is also a must. I have a few pair I love to throw on like these furry, buffalo plaid Birkenstocks.

This pillow is a a favorite. I love the mix of fabrics and trims. We make and sell pillows like this in my shop. See more pillows HERE.

My diner mugs and the beautiful fox tray are some of my finds when I was out #thriftingwiththegals. I have a few Instagram friends that wish we could all go antiquing together in the same place, but since we live all over the country, we do it virtually over Instagram Stories each week sharing what we find. Once a month we do a blog hop together too. Follow Along and Join In!

Do you love Vintage? Join my Facebook Group, Call Me Old Fashioned! Join HERE!

Another thing we love to do at night is watch a show. We have watched some great ones lately:

  • Oslo
  • Resistance
  • Brain on Fire
  • Munich, The Edge of War
  • The Trial of the Chicago 7
  • Worth

Good Night, Sleep Cozy!

One of our favorite Northwoods Supper Clubs, Norwood Pines, is known for its ice cream drinks. The Grasshopper and Brandy Alexander are the most popular, but another favorite is the Pink Squirrel.

Evenings at a Supper Club start with a cocktail at the bar, usually an Old Fashioned. Then you make your way to your table and linger over delicious food and sitting with the great company of family and friends. Your evening ends with an ice cream drink.

Read more about Supper Clubs in THIS POST.

Pink Squirrel- White Arrows Home

Listen to our Cabincast Podcast Interview with Supper Club owners Tom and John HERE.

It is believed the Pink Squirrel was invented by a bartender at a Cocktail Lounge in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the 1940s.

Today I’m making it as a traditional cocktail instead of an ice cream drink. It’s a bit like a thick melted milkshake.

It’s creamy and quick and easy to make with only three ingredients.

Start by filling a shaker with ice.

Pink Squirrel Cocktail

Then add:

  • 3/4 oz. Creame de Cacao
  • 3/4 oz. Creame de Almond
  • 1 1/2 oz. half and half or heavy cream

Shake until chilled.

Pour through strainer into glass.

Garnish with cherries and enjoy the tastes of chocolate and almond. It makes a great dessert or special treat. It’s perfect to serve seasonally for holidays like Valentine’s Day or birthdays too.

Pink Squirrel Cocktail

My little pink ceramic straw holder is actually a vintage planter I found last year in an antique store in Virocqua, Wisconsin. I knew it would be fun to use when serving this drink. I could fill it with straws or flowers. The rest of the time, he hangs out behind the bar on the shelf.

Want a fun idea that can start a tradition? At the beginning of the weekend, maybe while sipping Sangria at The Vine, put everyone’s name in a wine glass and then pass it around and have each girl choose a name out. Don’t share who you chose. During the weekend keep your eyes out for a special gift for that friend or family member. At your farewell breakfast you can do a gift exchange. You can also put a twist on this and chose a white elephant gift you find during the weekend. We have done it this way, and talk about laughing ’till your cheeks hurt!

The quickest and easiest way to make you home cozy is to add lamp light.

From the beginning of Fall all the way through Winter the urge to make our spaces more cozy takes over.

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

Especially in Winter as the days are shorter and temps are colder, having indoor spaces filled with the warm glow of lamp light makes coming home at night so much more inviting.

In just a few minutes and a quick walk through your home, you can turn on table and floor lamps changing the mood of your home room by room.

Here are some of my favorite lamps to give a cozy glow.

I love mixing styles. Industrial, Traditional, Rustic… they can still all be in the same room if they balance and compliment each other. Place your lamps on table tops near seating to help give light to evening reading. Use a floor light near seating where there is no side table.

Tiffany Style

I love the glow that comes out of our tiffany style lamp!

Natural Elements

My decor is inspired by what is right outside my window.

Color

You can use lamps as a way to add color to a space.

Traditional

I love the way traditional style lamps add elegance.

Industrial

The clean lines and beautiful Edison bulbs of many industrial style lamps make them favorites.

Themed

Some lamps fit the theme of a room like these lake house style lamps.

I don’t always focus on the start of a new year as a time to set goals. For one thing, and maybe it’s because I was a teacher for many years, September feels more like the start of a new year for me. January feels like the midway point. Mainly though, it’s because I set and adjust goals constantly every month. But, I do like the habit of taking time during the the Christmas Holidays to look back and reflect and also look forward.

A few years ago, I jumped on the trend to choose a word for the year. I chose a phrase, and it was life changing. I chose “Be Bold”. You can read more about it here, but it’s the moment I decided to chase my dream of starting a blog.

This year, I am going with the tradition of embracing a word again. Last month I attended a workshop led by a friend of a friend. I’ve met my friend Angie’s friend Michelle before, but this was a really fun way to get to know each other better. We went hiking in the woods, did yoga and talked about Mindfulness and living with intention. During the time together we also did a project that included choosing a word we wanted to focus on. It helped me springboard my thoughts about the direction of my goals.

The retreat was held in Michelle’s lakeside cabin in the Northwoods where she vacations with family, coming up from their home in Madison. It was the perfect backdrop for the day. A group of about 10 of us gathered together.

We met in the late afternoon, mingled and gathered for introductions. Then we all bundled up to head out on the snowy trails for a beautiful winter hike.

We stopped along the way to sit, close our eyes, to listen and really feel our peaceful surroundings. The leaders shared an inspiring story and we warmed up inside the cutest warming hut.

Our fearless leaders Michelle and Marni.

We got back to the cabin just as the sun was starting to go down. Candles were lit, the fire was roaring and coffee and wine filled our cups. It was a magical setting to warm up in!

A project was set out on the dining room table to make snow globes.

Michelle asked us to all choose a word to write on a rock and then glue to the top of the snow globe.

I was looking through the list and thinking and thinking, but what kept coming to me was a line from one of my favorite movies, Hope Floats, when Harry Connick, Jr. tells Sandra Bullock, “You used to be audacious. Bold. People would stop in the street and watch you walk. You think you’ve lost it, but I can still see it.” (Anybody else swooning with me?!)

Audacious… I love this word. It didn’t fit very well on my stone and in my handwriting, but it’s a beautiful, strong word. I looked up the meaning and pulled out the parts of the description that I wanted to focus on:

  • Daring
  • Marked by Originality
  • Bold (It says Recklessly Bold, but I don’t want the reckless part! I want to be Wisely Bold)
  • Confident (but not Cocky, I want to be Calmly Confident)

We made snow globes and talked about how with all the busy things going on in our lives and minds, it’s like a shaken up snow globe. Sometimes we need to slow down and give ourselves time to get calm and let the glitter settle so we can think clearly. It was such a beautiful visual!

We finished the day with some journaling and Marni led us in yoga.

Michelle and Marni have a dream of leading these workshops throughout the year and had gathered us as a test group getting our feedback and thoughts. We all thought it was wonderful and are excited about the possibility of participating again for a weekend long event.

If you are interested in attending a future workshop let me know and I’ll pass on the information when I hear anything!

Do you have a word for the year? I’ve been seeing a lot of people share theirs on social media. I’d love to have you share yours and the story behind why you chose it in the comments below. Or feel free to embrace being Audacious with me!

Starting in October my feet are in boots daily through May. Thats eight months of boot wearing! Luckily I love my Sorel boots. I love all the styles they come in that give me variety and style. Every pair of my Sorels keep my feet warm and dry and are so comfortable.

(Affiliate Links are shared for your convenience, read my full disclosure here.)

This is one of my favorite styles. They are great for when I need something that looks great during the day and into the evening. I love the wedge, laces and the leather/suede combo. I have them in black, but they come in other colors too.

Olive is one of my favorite colors to wear. I love it with black and denims. This boot is another favorite. I love the buckles, the rubber bootie and the mix of materials.

It may be obvious why I love this boot, but it’s not just for the buffalo plaid! I love how easy it is to throw on and run out for errands or school pick ups. It’s my go to boot for quick + stylish, warm + dry option.

These are my most worn boot. A stylish twist on the well loved duck boot, the leather and buckles make them transition well from casual to presentable in most of my day to day activities. They also come in a classy brown or gray.

What more could I ask for than the softest of liners inside a slip on loafer! I know it’s not a boot, but it’s a winter footwear staple! I chose the buffalo plaid, but they come in other colors as well. The soles give you great grip if you are needing a quick walk outside to grab something from the car.

When I’m going to be outside for a long time, this is my favorite boot! They work great under my snow pants when I go snowmobiling or when I’m standing out on our frozen lake watching the kids ice skate.

I like to always have a tall boot in black, brown and gray and these are my favorite grays. They are my daughter’s favorite too! I think she wears them more than I do! Love being in the same shoe size!

The perfect boot to pull me from Fall into Winter, these Sorel’s are a favorite to wear with jeans. I love the color and the fun laces!

Now any boot that has the word Cozy in it’s name is going to be a favorite for sure. Heading to spin class, down to lane to check the mail or sitting a the hockey rink. My feet stay dry and…well, cozy!

I live in The Northwoods where last year we got 100 inches of snow. And that’s all I have to say about that. 🙂 I need this boot!

You can see my favorite boots for Spring here.

See how we have fun in the winter in this post.

On My Wish List

One of the other things I love about my Sorel boots is that they last. I am able to have several pair of boots because I can keep them forever and only buy a new pair once in a while. They are so durable! Let me know your favorite boot and why you like it!
