In neighborhoods across the world, tucked into corners of parks, along quiet streets, or even in front yards, a special occurrence happens—one book at a time.

It’s not happening in a bookstore or a traditional library; it’s because of the Little Free Library.

These charming little boxes, often no larger than a birdhouse, are filled with books that anyone can take or leave.

No late fees, no membership cards—just the simple joy of sharing and discovering new stories.

I always dreamed of having one myself and a few years ago when I opened my shop, White Arrows Home in Mincoqua, Wisconsin I knew having a Little Free Library on the front porch would be the charming spot my dream could land.

White Arrows Home the Shop

One day at an estate sale I saw a beautiful little stained glass window and it came home with me, along with an idea. It would be the perfect door for the library.

I called up my carpenter and he built a beautiful library atop a stump with a green tin roof.

But what exactly is a Little Free Library, and how did the movement begin?

The Origins of Little Free Libraries

The first Little Free Library was created in 2009 by Todd Bol in Hudson, Wisconsin. I loved knowing it started in Wisconsin!

Wisconsin vacation, postcard pillow, buffalo plaid

Inspired by the memory of his late mother, who was an avid reader and teacher, Todd built a small, house-shaped box and filled it with books as a way to share her love of reading with the community.

He placed the box on a post in his front yard with a sign that read, “Free Books.” The response was overwhelming, and soon others wanted to create their own Little Free Libraries.

Todd’s simple idea quickly grew into a global movement.

The nonprofit organization Little Free Library was officially formed in 2012, and today, there are over 150,000 Little Free Libraries in more than 100 countries around the world. We are #

Each one operates on the honor system: you take a book you’d like to read, and you leave a book for someone else to enjoy.

The Power of Giving and Receiving

Little Free Libraries are more than just places to pick up a new novel or a children’s book. They’re powerful tools for fostering community and promoting literacy. Here are a few ways they’re making a difference:

  1. Building Connections
These little libraries help build connections between neighbors who may not otherwise interact. When you visit a Little Free Library, you’re not just taking a book; you’re participating in an exchange that brings people together. It’s an opportunity to meet new people, strike up a conversation, and share stories, all while contributing to a common goal: spreading the love of reading.
  2. Promoting Literacy and Education
By making books accessible to everyone, Little Free Libraries help bridge the gap between those who may have limited access to books and those who have an abundance. Books are often shared freely in communities with little to no cost, providing opportunities for children and adults to explore new topics, learn new things, and develop a lifelong love of reading.
  3. Sustaining the Cycle of Giving
Every time someone takes a book from a Little Free Library, they’re encouraged to leave a book in exchange. This creates a sustainable cycle of giving that benefits everyone. People from all walks of life contribute their books, and in return, they get the chance to discover something new. It’s a beautiful example of how even small acts of kindness can ripple outward to create lasting change.
  4. Celebrating Diversity and Access
Little Free Libraries celebrate the diversity of literature. They offer books across all genres, from fiction and poetry to cookbooks and self-help guides. Many Little Free Libraries are also home to multilingual books or those that represent marginalized voices, providing opportunities for readers to engage with different perspectives. Whether you’re looking for a cozy mystery, a children’s story, or a resource on gardening, there’s likely a Little Free Library nearby offering something for everyone.

How to Get Involved

If you’re inspired by the Little Free Library movement and want to get involved, there are plenty of ways you can help—whether you have a little free space in your front yard or simply want to contribute books.

  • Create Your Own Library: If you have a spot in your yard or a local park that could use a little library, consider building one. The official Little Free Library website has resources, including plans, materials, and tips for getting started. You can even register your library with the organization to get an official number and join the global network. Get more ideas from my Little Free Library Pinterest Board.
  • Donate Books: One of the easiest ways to contribute to a Little Free Library is by donating books. Keep an eye out for a nearby library, and drop off any gently used books you no longer need. Whether it’s a novel you finished or a textbook you no longer use, your donation can help keep the cycle of sharing alive. I love seeing what books get added during the week and what people take.

  • Visit and Share: If you’re not ready to create your own Little Free Library just yet, simply visiting and taking a book—or leaving one—is a great way to contribute to the community. Each visit helps ensure these small libraries continue to thrive. Its also a fun stop to add into your travels.
  • Spread the Word: Even if you don’t have a library to share, you can still promote the movement. Tell friends and family about Little Free Libraries, and encourage them to check out local libraries or even start their own.

The Joy of Discovery

One of the most delightful aspects of Little Free Libraries is the element of surprise. You never quite know what you’ll find inside. It could be an out-of-print novel, a beloved childhood book, or even a rare edition of a classic.

And just as often, you’ll find books you can pass along to others—books that you’re ready to share because you know someone else will love them as much as you did.

We like to leave things inside like bookmarks to take along or other fun book lover surprises.

Whether you’re an avid reader or someone just looking for a new adventure, there’s something uniquely special about discovering a new book from your local Little Free Library.

It’s a small, simple gesture that connects communities, promotes literacy, and encourages a shared love of reading.

And in a world that often feels too busy, there’s something truly magical about the quiet exchange of a book, right there on your street corner. There’s a really cute cabin shaped library at the first house on our road.

So next time you see one of these little boxes on a walk, take a moment to peek inside. You might just find the perfect book waiting for you to take home, curl up and read—or be inspired to share one of your own.

Kristin Lenz reading

Little Free Libraries are a testament to the power of community and the simple act of sharing.

By offering books for free, they provide a valuable service to people of all ages and backgrounds, and they help foster connections in the places we live.

Whether you’re borrowing a book, donating one, or simply admiring the artwork on a charming little box, there’s no denying that these libraries bring a little extra magic into the world—one book at a time.

The Joy of Cranberries: A Superfood for the Season

Cranberries are one of the few fruits native to North America, and they have certainly earned their place as a beloved holiday staple. Whether they’re swirling in a tangy sauce at Thanksgiving dinner, adding a burst of color to a winter salad, or starring in a refreshing juice, cranberries offer a delightful mix of tartness, flavor, and nutrition. But beyond their seasonal popularity, cranberries are a superfood with a fascinating history and a wealth of health benefits. But truly these vibrant red berries deserve a spot in our kitchens all year long.

In the Cranberries

I honestly never thought too much about cranberries until the past several years. I knew I loved a glass of cranberry juice, munching on Craisins and adding cranberries in recipes, but never thought deeper.

After moving to the Northwoods of Wisconsin, where there a several cranberry farms in Manitowish Waters, I became so curious, interested and fascinated.

There are farms that open up to tours each year and offer field trips to students.

I’ve been blessed to get some behind the scenes tours and events at one of the farms owned by a friend whose husband is a fourth generation farmer at Bartling’s Manitowish Cranberry Company. They are a proud grower/owner with Ocean Spray. They don’t offer public tours, but have an amazing website full of photos, history and information- a cranberry 101.

Bartling's Cranberries in Manitowish Waters

Other areas in the Northwoods have farms as well and Eagle River celebrates with a large Cranberry Festival the first weekend in October each year.

The History of Cranberries

Cranberries have a rich history in North America, where they’ve been cultivated for centuries. Native American tribes were the first to recognize the berry’s medicinal and nutritional properties. They used cranberries for everything from treating urinary tract infections to dyeing fabrics, and even in making pemmican—a high-energy mixture of berries, meat, and fat used by hunters and travelers. Early European settlers adopted these uses, and cranberries soon became a key part of the American diet, especially during the fall harvest.

Today, the United States and Canada are the primary producers of cranberries, with Wisconsin and Massachusetts leading the way in cultivation. The distinctive bogs where cranberries grow are flooded during harvest season, creating the picturesque “ocean” of red berries that many of us associate with cranberry farms.

Health Benefits of Cranberries

Cranberries are more than just a festive fruit—they’re packed with nutrients that can support your health in a variety of ways.

1. Rich in Antioxidants: Cranberries are a powerhouse of antioxidants, particularly vitamin C and flavonoids, which help to combat oxidative stress in the body. Antioxidants protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, contributing to overall health and reducing the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

2. Urinary Tract Health: One of the most well-known health benefits of cranberries is their role in preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs). Cranberries contain compounds called proanthocyanidins that prevent harmful bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract, reducing the likelihood of infection. While they’re not a cure for UTIs, cranberries can be a helpful preventative measure.

3. Heart Health: The antioxidants in cranberries, along with their fiber and anti-inflammatory properties, can contribute to heart health by improving blood pressure, reducing cholesterol levels, and lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Some studies have shown that regular consumption of cranberries may help reduce the buildup of plaque in the arteries, which is linked to atherosclerosis.

4. Gut Health: Cranberries are rich in dietary fiber, which is essential for digestive health. Fiber promotes healthy digestion, aids in regular bowel movements, and supports a balanced gut microbiome. Additionally, the natural compounds in cranberries may help prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in the gut, contributing to overall digestive wellness.

5. Immune Support: Cranberries are high in vitamin C, which plays a crucial role in strengthening the immune system. Vitamin C helps to fight off infections, reduce inflammation, and support healthy skin. This makes cranberries a great addition to your diet, especially during cold and flu season.

Creative Ways to Enjoy Cranberries

While cranberries are most commonly used in sauces and baked goods during the holiday season, they can be enjoyed in a variety of ways throughout the year. Here are some ideas for incorporating more cranberries into your meals:

1. Fresh Cranberry Sauce: Homemade cranberry sauce is easy to make and much fresher than the canned variety. Simply simmer fresh cranberries with sugar, orange zest, and a touch of cinnamon until the berries burst and the sauce thickens. This vibrant sauce can be served as a topping for turkey, roasted vegetables, or even yogurt.

2. Cranberry Smoothies: Add a handful of fresh or frozen cranberries to your morning smoothie for a tart, refreshing twist. Pair them with other fruits like bananas, oranges, and strawberries, and blend with yogurt or almond milk for a delicious, nutrient-packed breakfast or snack.

3. Cranberry Relish or Chutney: For a more savory take on cranberries, make a relish or chutney by combining cranberries with onions, ginger, garlic, and vinegar. This can be served alongside meats like chicken, pork, or lamb to add a sweet and tangy kick.

4. Dried Cranberries: Dried cranberries are a convenient snack that you can toss into trail mixes, salads, or oatmeal. Be mindful to choose unsweetened dried cranberries, as many commercial varieties are packed with added sugar. Alternatively, you can make your own dried cranberries at home by dehydrating fresh berries in an oven or dehydrator.

5. Cranberry Baked Goods: Cranberries add a burst of tart flavor to muffins, cakes, and cookies. For a festive touch, try adding them to classic recipes like banana bread, scones, or shortbread cookies. Their tangy bite contrasts wonderfully with the sweetness of sugar or chocolate chips.

6. Cranberry Cocktails: Cranberries are the perfect ingredient for holiday cocktails. A splash of cranberry juice can elevate a classic vodka cranberry, or you can make a cranberry mojito with fresh berries, mint, lime, and rum. For a warm winter drink, mix cranberry juice with a splash of cinnamon and serve it hot with a cinnamon stick garnish.

Where to Find Cranberries

Fresh cranberries are typically available in the fall and early winter months, so be sure to stock up during this time. You can find them in most grocery stores, often in the produce section. If fresh cranberries aren’t available, frozen cranberries are a great alternative and can be used in most recipes.

For dried cranberries, look for options with minimal added sugar or try making your own. Many health food stores also offer organic or unsweetened dried cranberries. You can even find cranberry extracts and supplements if you’re interested in their health benefits, particularly for urinary tract health.

Cranberries are more than just a holiday treat—they’re a powerhouse fruit with a host of health benefits and endless culinary possibilities. Whether you’re enjoying them fresh, dried, or juiced, cranberries bring a bright, tart flavor to your dishes while supporting your health in a variety of ways.

Plan a visit to the Northwoods of Wisconsin in the Fall around the cranberry harvest and take a tour. Stock up on fresh berries to take home to put in the freezer to pull out for recipes, to add antioxidants to your wellness routine and to add a festive touch and a little extra cheer to your decor.

Last year, when one of my daughters was living in Germany, my other daughter and I traveled over to visit at the beginning of December for a week.

It was a wonderful visit getting to spend time with her, see her life there, meet her friends and have a special tour guide.

One of the added bonuses to visiting this time of year was the Christmas Markets.

German Christmas Market

As winter sets in and the festive season approaches, there’s nothing quite as enchanting as a visit to a Christmas market in Germany or Austria.

SUBSCRIBE HERE so you don’t miss any inspiration!

These holiday markets, known for their twinkling lights, delightful aromas, and old-world charm, transport visitors into a fairy-tale setting where holiday traditions come alive with a blend with festive cheer to create an unforgettable atmosphere.

Whether you’re strolling through medieval town squares or wandering along snow-dusted streets, a visit to these Christmas markets is a must for anyone looking to experience the magic of the season.

Christmas Markets in Germany and Austria

We were able to visit several Christmas Markets just in our scheduled travel.

It was so interesting to see the ways they were similar and the ways they were different.

My overall memory of these experiences is that they were just as charming, festive and beautiful as I had dreamed they would be. I was so inspired by the holiday decorating and so touched by the attention to detail and community involvement.

We based our travel out of Karlsruhe, Germany and were able to walk through their beautiful market several times.

German Christmas Market

One of the highlights of the Karlsruhe Christmas market is its family-friendly atmosphere with a whole area focused on children’s activities and interests.

Rich Traditions and History

The tradition of Christmas markets dates back to the Middle Ages, with some of the oldest markets in Europe found in Germany and Austria.

The first recorded Christmas market, “Striezelmarkt” in Dresden, began in 1434, setting the stage for what would become a beloved holiday tradition across the region.

Over the centuries, these markets evolved from simple winter fairs into the elaborate spectacles they are today, offering visitors a glimpse into centuries-old holiday customs.

German Christmas Market

We visited the market in Baden-Baden, Germany.

One of my favorite parts of this market was the abundance of nativities.

Baden Baden Nativity

The Christmas market in Baden-Baden, Germany, is a delightful winter escape nestled in the heart of the Black Forest set against the backdrop of the town’s stunning 19th-century architecture and the beautiful Kurhaus (a grand spa building).

Charm and Atmosphere

One of the main attractions of all the markets is the atmosphere.

The markets are usually set in historic town squares, surrounded by centuries-old buildings and churches, their spires rising above the festive crowds.

As you see in so many of my photos, wooden stalls, decorated with garlands and lights, line the streets, selling everything from handcrafted ornaments to steaming mugs of mulled wine.

There’s a palpable sense of community, with locals and visitors alike coming together to celebrate the season.

Angel Mailbox Baden Baden

We also took a beautiful hike through the Black Forest over looking Baden-Baden and exploring castle ruins.

If you can’t make the trip you can still bring home beautiful German Christmas decor. Shop my Amazon Storefront to find beautiful options.

Local Specialties and Delicious Treats

Food and drink are a central part of any visit to a German or Austrian Christmas market.

I have to share, I loved the Glühwein, a hot spiced wine, which is the drink of choice and often served in festive mugs that you can take home as a souvenir.

For something sweeter, you can indulge in Lebkuchen (gingerbread cookies), Maroni (roasted chestnuts), or Stollen (a rich, fruit-filled bread). Trying roasted chestnuts for the first time did not disappoint, they were delicious!

In Austria, don’t miss out on Kipferl (crescent-shaped cookies) and hot chocolate, served with a shot of schnapps for an extra warming kick.

Salzburg, A Castle & The Sound of Music

We took a quick trip down to Salzburg, Austria and stayed in a very special place.

Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron Salzburg

Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg is a breathtakingly beautiful and historic hotel set in a grand 18th-century palace, nestled beside a tranquil lake and surrounded by lush gardens.

The hotel was a peaceful retreat just a short distance from Salzburg’s city center, making it an ideal blend of history, luxury, and natural beauty. There were beautiful walking trails we were able to take right into the city.

Originally the private residence of a wealthy aristocratic family, the palace is perhaps best known as the filming location for the iconic movie The Sound of Music, where it served as the backdrop for the von Trapp family home.

We were able to freely enjoy the regal atmosphere of the hotel’s baroque interiors, including ornate frescoes and antique furnishings, while taking in stunning views of the lake and the nearby Alps.

We spent time in the library, enjoyed a meal in the elegant dining room and ate delicious meals at local neighborhood restaurants right near the hotel. It was is like stepping into a fairy tale or a movie set!

Salzburg Christmas Market

We also visited the Salzburg Christmas Market before and after an organ concert.

Salzburg’s Christmas market, held in the heart of its medieval Old Town, is so picturesque.

The market, set against the backdrop of Hohensalzburg Fortress and the baroque Residenzplatz, is known for its artistic and handcrafted goods, including delicate glass ornaments, intricate wood carvings, and candles.

For something sweet, sample the famous Salzburger Nockerl (a fluffy meringue dessert) or the classic Apfelstrudel. Our favorites were the pretzels!

Want to visit the Christmas Markets?

Practical Tips for Visiting

  • Timing: Christmas markets generally open from late November to Christmas Eve, with the largest crowds arriving in the weeks leading up to Christmas. If you want to avoid the busiest days, try to visit during the weekdays or early in the season.
  • Weather: Be prepared for cold weather! Dress warmly, as temperatures can drop significantly, especially in the evening. Layer up and bring gloves, scarves, and a good pair of boots to stay comfortable as you explore the markets. We didn’t have snow, but had lots of rain. Even in the rain, we were able to fully enjoy the experience.
  • Souvenirs: Don’t forget to pick up a few keepsakes to remember your trip! Handcrafted ornaments, wooden toys, and Christmas-themed decorations make for beautiful and lasting souvenirs.
  • Getting There: Germany and Austria are well-connected by train and public transportation, making it easy to hop from one market to another. Major cities like Munich, Vienna, and Salzburg also have airports with good international connections. We rented a car and had a beautiful, easy drive on the Autoban.

Getting to visit the Christmas markets in Germany and Austria was a festive experience, rich in traditions, delicious food, beautiful handmade gifts, and a sense of holiday magic. I made amazing memories with Kallin and her friends and was so blessed by their sharing of these moments.

Whether we were sipping Glühwein under a canopy of twinkling lights, marveling at the architecture, or browsing the stalls, the experience will stay with us long after the season ends.

I can’t wait to pack my bags, don my coziest sweater, and visit again to make more magical memories at the Christmas markets of Germany and Austria.

Happy holidays!

I recently took my daughter to Nashville for her fist college visit, touring Belmont University.

We made a long weekend out of it, picking up my sister on the way down in Milwaukee to come with us.

Her daughter, my niece, lives in Nashville so we are also getting time with her.

I was excited too to check another Graduate Hotel off my bucket list, The Graduate Nashville.

Graduates are usually located near college and university campuses and decorated with a theme around students.

The room key cards are student IDs showing famous graduates or people from the area.

Along with inspiration from the colleges nearby Graduate Hotels also find inspiration in the town and community they are located in.

The Graduate Nashville is full of nods to country music, especially Dolly Parton and other female icons like Minnie Pearl, Emmylou Harris and Patsy Cline.

The Graduate Hotel Nashville, TN

Did you see my Boutique Hotel Series where I shared about other boutique hotels I’ve loved including a few other Graduate stays?

Inspired by the dynamic and unique college towns that we call home, Graduate Hotels is a collection of welcoming, one-of-a-kind experiences rich with local history, charm and pop culture nostalgia. Always original and never boring, we invite you to explore our 33+ locations across the U.S. and the U.K. to discover the stories that inspire us every day.

When you enter Graduate Nashville you find yourself surrounded by local history, legends and Southern charm.

The Graduate Nashville is located Midtown, near Vanderbilt and Belmont Universities, and a close walk to Broadway.

Restaurants, shopping and activities abound all around the area.

Poindexter Coffee

The lobby coffee shop was a first stop for me each morning.

I loved the crystal chandeliers and the pencils covering the bar surround.

Graduate Hotels began in 2014 with their hotels in Athens and Tempe.and now have over 33 locations.

The creativity, the mix of patterns and textures, the attention to detail- all these things make staying at Graduates fascinating for me.

Last year the Graduate Hotel coffee table book came out.

It is full of beautiful inspiration photos from all the different and unique hotel locations.

Grab your copy HERE.

Where to Sit?

One of my favorite parts of staying in a boutique hotel is the many options of great spots to sit and work, read or gather.

The Nashville Graduate does not disappoint.

I need days to sit in all the spots that call to me like these gold chesterfields.

I love getting up early, when the lobby is still quiet, to read or work.

This amazing table was where I sat one morning comfy in a velvet chair and inspired with the decor around me.

Everywhere were beautiful seasonal flower arrangements perfect for Fall.

Like other Graduate Hotels, there were bicycles available to check out and take out to explore the town.

Morning Wake Up

If we didn’t grab coffee down at Poindexter’s then we could make some in our room.

I loved the Morning To-Do List on the napkins by the coffee pot.

One of my favorite things in the room was this photo of country music singers gathered together probably from a night at the Grand Ole Opry.

Every time we were in the room there were new details noticed.

White Limozeen

The hotel has a rooftop bar and restaurant that is worth the visit even if you aren’t staying at The Graduate.

It has amazing views of Nashville and the decor is fabulous inside and outside.

There’s a creative drink menu and “homestyle-meets-traditional French food”.

Everything at White Limozeen right now was decorated for Halloween, including the giant Dolly made out of chicken wire.

Did you know you can learn more about the Nashville Graduate and many of the other locations watching the HGTV

After 7 p.m. you have to be 21 to enter.

Reservations are needed for a table inside.

The Details

I love taking in all the patterns, textures, fabrics, tiles and accessories all throughout the hotel.

I can’t wait for my next Graduate stay!

I’m going to go read my book at start planning another getaway.

A ROAD TRIP TO THE PIONEER WOMAN MERCANTILE, with great shopping and great food makes a wonderful girls’ getaway.

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

In part one of this Road Trip Series I shared about how a few friends and I checked off a bucket list adventure to visit The Pioneer Woman Mercantile in Pawhuska, Oklahoma on our way down to Dallas.

Traveling from Wisconsin, we drove just a little out of the way for this stop, but it was so worth it.

We stayed in the cutest rental, The Farmhouse Relatively Near the Prairie, walking distance to the Mercantile and it was the perfect spot, charming, comfortable and decorated beautifully. Read about it and see more photos in THIS POST.

Subscribe to White Arrows Home

After arriving the night before, a delicious pizza dinner on the back patio and wonderful night’s sleep I arose to enjoy coffee and quiet time on the Farmhouse’s front porch. I rocked and soaked in the bird sounds of a Summer morning.

The Farmhouse Relatively Near the Prairie Pioneer Woman, Pawhuska, Oklahoma

Then when all the girls were up we strolled a few blocks down to the Mercantile. What bliss, to just stroll! No timeline, no rush. Time to stop and look at the architecture and treasures along the way. And there were lots of them! What an interesting downtown Pawhuska has.

This sign gave me a huge smile.

We have a Little Free Library at White Arrows Home and we all loved this twist on the idea of having a Blessing Box to share pantry items and necessities for those in need.

As we drove through this part of Oklahoma I was amazed by how beautiful the rolling green hills were. I had pictured that it would be flat prairies, but was pleasantly surprised by the landscape.

Look at the stairs going up the hill from main street.

Pawhuska’s main street downtown was very long and full of old brick buildings. Many with porches along the front.

One of the things we were amazed by were all the signs and window lettering. As we visited some of the shops they shared that the book, Flowers of the Killer Moon had been written about true historic events in their area and a movie to be released this Fall was filmed here.

When I watched the trailer, I saw much of this streetscape show up, like this building entrance view. Watch the trailer HERE.

The movie, directed by Martin Scorsese, stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro sharing the story of the Osage Nation as they became wealthy almost overnight when oil was struck at the turn of the 20th century. Crime, including murder, soon came as people moved in to swindle the Osage of their wealth.

My husband read the book several years ago. I plan to before the movie comes out. I’m looking forward to it, especially after our visit to Pawhuska.

Get your copy of Flowers of the Killer Moon to read before watching the movie HERE.

The tile entry from the old JCPenny was still on the ground even though the building is gone.

I love looking at old buildings and the artistry and craftsmanship that went into making them.

What a cool idea this was to add the brands to the side of this building and a park space where a building once stood. I love the addition of green spaces.

Up above you can see the Courthouse.

Another long flight of steps takes you up above from the main street below.

I had to take a photo of this building. My maiden name is Patterson!

On the front of an old bank hangs this patina and stained glass robbery alarm.

I love old vehicles and was instantly charmed by the truck out in front of The Merc built from old truck parts found on the Drummond Ranch over the years and put together by a family friend.

Every detail of the Mercantile was done well and beautifully, just look at the sign, even branded with Ree’s bright flower accents. See and her husband spent years fixing up this hundred year old building so they could welcome people from all over to their shop, bakery and restaurant.

As a shop owner myself, I love to see how other stores are merchandised and the Mercantile was great inspiration. They have variety of fun items at different price points appealing all all types of buyers. Something I’ve always tried to have too.

I loved the lighting everywhere like these big chandeliers. And the flower garlands and gatherings throughout the store were a lovely touch.

There were touches of ranch life everywhere to take home with you.

Little spots to sit while you wait for others to be done shopping were a nice touch.

A super fun area was all the salt & pepper shakers for sale.

What mercantile would be complete without the opportunity to buy a bag of marbles.

And again, the flowers everywhere were festive and pretty.

Their gift wrap station was a nice option for having things packaged up.

The branded items available were beautiful options for a souvenir to take home.

Big, wide stairs led up to the second floor bakery and coffee shop.

The decor upstairs was fun with lots of cozy options to gather and enjoy coffee, crepes and pastries.

It’s always fun to see how the bathrooms are decorated when you travel to great hotels, restaurants and shops.

We went to the Merc right when it opened at 7 a.m. After shopping a bit we had breakfast in the restaurant.

After ordering they brought us a plate of biscuits. We all agreed they were the best biscuits we’d ever had.

The lighting and decor in the restaurant was just as fun as the rest of the spaces.

I loved the vintage style dishes and glassware they used.

You can see their menus online and get an idea of the wonderful options. The french toast was amazing!

I often take photos of menus or enjoy peeking online because it can inspire my own meal planning back home.

One of my favorite parts was that they kept the old graphics uncovered on the wall.

We enjoyed a leisurely walk back to our rental peeking at more of the downtown and stopping in a few shops.

In one window I found a view of what the street looked like in it’s heyday.

Even thought our stop in Pawhuska was short, it was well worth it!

As we left and headed to Dallas we were stopped along the highway. We were worried it was a big accident. But, it was just a film crew shooting scenes for the movie Twister 2!

I’m looking forward to another road trip to Pawhuska and another fun girls’ getaway at some point. It would be fun to go back again! I highly recommend were we stayed (shared in my previous post) as well as taking the time to schedule eating at the Mercantile restaurant.

They also offer trips to The Lodge. If you are a fan of Ree’s cooking show, that would be a fun addition to the trip.

Other local attractions could extend your stay and are found on their website.

The perfect place to stay on A Road Trip to the Pioneer Woman Mercantile, The Farmhouse Relatively Near the Prairie.

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

I’m always up for a great road trip full of adventures and exploring new places whether with my family or a group of girlfriends. Today I’m sharing Part One of our road trip to The Pioneer Woman Mercantile in Pawhuska, Oklahoma and the charming Air B & B we stayed in.

It was fun to check this destination off my bucket list.

I took along three of my great friends who are part of my staff at White Arrows Home The Shop in Minocqua, Wisconsin.

The final destination for our road trip was Dallas. The Shop was nominated for a Retailer in Excellence Award and the winners would be announced at an event in conjunction with The Dallas Market.

When I suggested that we drive down and make a stop at Pioneer Woman on the way, the girls immediately agreed. This is part of what makes great road trip companions! The eagerness to see new things. These girls also were the perfect travels because they were constantly positive, flexible and fun.

We left Wisconsin and went through Minnesota. (Said hello to some Vikings.)

Then went through Iowa. I went to college in Iowa and lived there for seven years after college, teaching school. We didn’t drive through the area I lived in, but I had been telling the girls some special things about Iowa and mentioned eating Maid Rites.

Then, we happened to stop at an Amish Store that had a Maid-Rite restaurant attached. A Maid-Rite is a lot like a sloppy joe, it’s a loose meat burger.

(See how the photo shows the words backwards? It’s an easy fix on an iPhone. I need to go double check my camera. Go under Camera in Settings and scroll down to Mirror Front Camera and switch the toggle off.)

We went through a little bit of Missouri and then Kansas arriving in Oklahoma. This part of Oklahoma is absolutely beautiful with rolling green pasture lands.

One of my favorite things traveling is staying in boutique hotels and beautiful places. For this trip I found a super cute Air B & B right near downtown Pawhuska and walking distance to the Pioneer Woman Mercantile, The Farmhouse Relatively Near the Prairie.

It was a charming farmhouse, comfortable and decorated with every detail special. The big wrap around front porch was so welcoming with ceiling fans, rockers and a porch swing.

The front gardens were so pretty. Next door to the Farmhouse was the Cottage, both share an amazing backyard.

The Farmhouse had five bedrooms, all with private attached bathrooms. The Studio, available to rent separately next door has one bedroom and bathroom. It makes the perfect set up for a group to stay.

The living room of the Farmhouse had plenty of room to gather.

A primary bedroom was located on the first floor.

I loved the details throughout the home like this American flag in the entry. Everything was themed so well, without over doing it, to the location near the Oklahoma prairie.

A farmhouse style entry bench with a windmill pillow and buffalo plaid blanket added to the seating on the first floor and gave an added drop zone by the front door.

Items like this buffalo door stop are a perfect example of the owners fun attention to detail.

Iron carvings for signage like door numbers on each room, the sign outside the home, and other pieces like the light switches were a gorgeous touch.

The primary bathroom was spacious and luxurious with a vanity of double sinks, a glass shower and clawfoot tub.

The kitchen table provided lots of seating under beautiful lighting.

The styling on the open kitchen shelves provided space for more farmhouse touches with many galvanized pieces.

Do you collect the Starbucks state mugs? I have a Wisconsin one and loved how they had the Oklahoma one on display.

It was an easy open floor plan to enjoy the whole space with a group.

The outside patio was unanimously our favorite spot. With the twinkle lights and fun decor it was a beautiful spot to enjoy the evening.

We arrived at the Farmhouse in the evening so went downtown and got pizza to go, brought it back and enjoyed it here on the patio.

Every farmhouse needs a dinner bell.

Check out this charming, creative swing seat.

The outdoor fireplace reminiscent of a barn’s silo was a striking architectural accent.

We didn’t have access to the cute studio next door, but could see how perfect it would be to rent both for a bigger group.

I highly recommend staying at The Farmhouse Relatively Near the Prairie when you plan your visit to The Pioneer Woman Mercantile in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. It was the perfect place to stay.

Keep following along. Tomorrow I’ll be sharing about The Mercantile and our breakfast there. The Farmhouse was an easy walk downtown to The Mercantile, making it so convenient. Anytime we can add walking into our trip it’s a bonus!

A visit to Magnolia’s Spring at the Silos offered a special rooftop picnic lunch opportunity and an artisan market full of treasures.

A wonderful way to connect with a friend is to go on an adventure together. Take a trip near or far. It could just be a day long jaunt to local antique shops or to explore a nearby community you’ve always wanted to experience.

Or plan a vacation further away. Maybe where the only goal is to relax at a beach. Maybe it’s Europe and a spot you’ve always had on your bucket list. Or to a women’s retreat to learn something new.

When one of my best girlfriends asked if I wanted to go to Waco, Texas for Spring at the Silos, I said a quick yes! The number one reason is she lives a state away in Iowa so I like any excuse I get to see her.

Spring at the Silos

Texas is also my home state and a trip to Waco means we can stop along the way in my hometown of Waxahachie. (See our stop in ‘Hatchie in Part One of this series HERE.) I also hadn’t been to Waco since my brother graduated from Baylor almost 20 years ago, that was pre Magnolia. So it would be my first time to visit The Silos.

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

Catch up on the rest of my Magnolia Spring at the Silos Adventure. There was so much to share I wrote it in three separate posts.

Spring at the Silos

We had a beautiful sunny day to explore the Magnolia grounds, enjoy the ticketed Rooftop Picnic lunch event and enjoy the special weekend vendors.

Living now way Up North where we have snow falling sometimes until May I was relishing the green and Spring growth everywhere.

Magnolia Spring at the Silos

Rooftop Picnic

Spring at the Silos is a special weekend event. The season of Spring, at the Silos, lasts for months, but this special weekend comes once a year.

There’s special decorating around, a market full of individual vendors and craftspeople lining the streets in tents and a rooftop picnic lunch.

Want to get daily encouragement? SUBSCRIBE HERE so you don’t miss any posts!

Visiting The Silos and even the special vendors on this weekend are free, as is time at The Silos always.

But the Rooftop Picnic was a special event with a ticket to purchase and limited seating. Tickets went on sale about a month or so before the event announced to Magnolia subscribers first.

I definitely think it was worth purchasing the ticket for the event. The lunch was very special and well done.

It was up above the Magnolia main shop with “Brady Bunch” turf covering the ground.

They had a lemonade bar with amazing strawberry lemonades made with fresh fruit.

A caprese salad was waiting at each spot on a marble board.

Everyone was able to take home the board as a gift. Mine now sits by my sink at our getaway house with a bowl of lemons and limes on it. It’s a fun memory to see it there.

For lunch they had a selection of sandwiches or a vegetarian option. There were yummy sides and even a kids option.

Throughout the lunch there were Magnolia staffers who shared stories and played Trivia games for prizes with all the attendees.

There was a fun photo booth.

I got to bring home a fun photo memory to hang on my inspiration wall!

There were also birds eye amazing views looking down from The Rooftop.

For desert they did Dr. Pepper Ice Cream floats. With Dr. Pepper being proudly based out of Waco, it was the perfect presentation.

In Texas we call everything a Coke, and my favorite kind is Dr. Pepper! What do you say where you are? Pop? Soda?

My kids, having grown up in Wisconsin say soda. My friends from Iowa, where I went to college and then taught school for seven years say Pop.

It was crazy windy on the roof that day, almost impossible to get a selfie without my hair covering my face! LOL!

Amazon Shop

The Market

It was really inspiring to visit all the vendors lining the roads on the outside of Magnolia. The roads were closed so that visitors could walk safely and easily from booth to booth.

There were so many wonderful artisans and makers featured. It would be hard to choose a favorite. I found something that inspired me in each tent.

But one that I loved, must be the writer in me (and maybe that I’m vintage typewriter collector), was the gentleman doing poetry on the spot. He’d ask a few questions and then type a personal poem out for the customer.

As a hat girl I loved seeing Gigi Pip‘s trailer there and all the people adorning their hats.

This saying on the side of their trailer was awesome.

I always say I’m:

I loved the artwork in this booth and that the artists was letting little ones walking by help paint.

This booth was so fresh and creative. I loved all the live plants and pots.

It just drew me in.

I loved the beautiful idea of meaningful, special temporary tattoos.

There were several apparel booths to enjoy.

The creativity abounded. Being surrounded by creative people and works is so uplifting and energizing to me!

The Little Shop on Bosque

On our way to shop some of the other antique stores in Waco we also made a stop at the original Magnolia store where Jo first started.

They have all their sale items there now.

The Hotel

We had a great dinner at a little Mexican restaurant within walking distance of the hotel and then a great night sleep. The Pivovar was the perfect location right across the little street and train tracks from The Silos.

It is so charming and well decorated. Read more about it in THIS POST I did as part of my Boutique Hotel Series.

Pivovar Hotel, Waco, TX

Magnolia Table

We were so glad we had spent a beautiful sunny day outside at The Silos yesterday, because our second day in Waco was cold, really windy and rainy.

The only thing really on our agenda was breakfast at Magnolia Table. I’m not really a fan of anything I have to have a long wait for, but this brunch was definitely worth the wait.

The food was amazing! Especially the lavender doughnuts, but it was the little details (just like everywhere at Magnolia) that got me!

One of my favorite sayings has always been, “Of Course You Can Sit Here!” and this saying has the same message. You belong, you are welcome here. Nobody has to sit alone, unless they want to.

That’s our main hope at my shop, that people will have those feelings the second they walk in the door.

The same great quote from the Magnolia Table Food Truck over at The Silos graces the restaurant mugs.

Time to Go Home

Before heading North toward the airport we made two stops. One to UPS to mail a few last things home. We decided next time to drive down so we could take more home in the car. And who doesn’t love a good road trip with your girlfriends!

Probably next Spring we will drive down and hit Magnolia on the way to Round Top. It’s next on our bucket list.

Then we of course had to grab Whataburger. My husband, not from Texas, doesn’t get it. My friend who was with me had never had it, but I crave a jalapeño burger and fries with fancy ketchup and so it was a must stop.

Thanks so much for coming along on the trip with me virtually. It’s been fun to go back through the photos and great memories!

A beautiful day at Magnolia Market’s Spring at The Silos brings inspiration for my wwn gardens and so much more as I shopped and explored.

I’m excited to share part two, of my three part series, of my trip to Texas and the Spring at the Silos Event.

One of my best girlfriends asked me to go along with her to Magnolia. She had been a few times before, but it was my first. We had so much fun!

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

Our first full day in Waco we woke up to gorgeous sunshine. The hotel had an amazing included breakfast. It was so delicious, unique and special and presented so beautifully. See the details in my post about the Pivovar boutique hotel HERE.

What You May Have Missed in My Magnolia Series:

  • Part One
  • Part Three comes tomorrow so stay tuned!

Spring at the Silos

After breakfast we walked over to The Silos, which were just across the street from our hotel. It was so convenient and easy!

I grabbed a coffee from Magnolia Press and then we began enjoy all The Silos grounds have to offer. There’s so much more than shopping! Food trucks, gathering spots, quiet in the church, games, tastings…

Shopping at the Silos

When people ask me to name favorites, I really struggle. I am easily content and have so many likes and interests. So when I’m asked what my favorite shop is at Magnolia, I can’t answer. I love them all. I love the variety of offerings, settings and seeing how they were styled and merchandised.

The Shops at the Silos located in six cute cottages were fun with their different themes.

Vie Bien Aimee, the bath and body shop had so many wonderful items to take care of your skin and whole body to rejuvenate, enhance health and relaxation.

Chapter One had gorgeous paper goods, books, journals and art supplies. I could have lived in this shop! (so maybe that means I’m leaning toward a favorite?)

No. 16, named for Chip’s old baseball number had men’s provisions.

There were also cottages, Vie Bien Aimee with women’s fashion and Tried & True had bags and jewelry. There’s also Ferny’s Retro Plant Shop now open, but it wasn’t yet when we visited.

Magnolia Home was full of gorgeous home decor and accessories and also ideas. It was full of inspiration even though we didn’t take any furniture home with us!

I love they way they communicate messages of home, love and family so beautifully and artistically.

Building mood/dream/idea boards is one of my favorite things so this one had me swooning. And check out the cute book stack for a table leg!

Just the simple ideas like the washi tape holding the leaves on the plate was such a lovely idea to take home to my own gatherings.

Amazon Shop

Later in the day we participated in the ticket only Rooftop Picnic above the main Magnolia shop. I’ll share all about the fun of that even in tomorrow’s post.

There was a guest book just outside with messages and signatures from all over.

This space was one of the ones I was most excited to see because I love hearing about the background of the feature walls and displays Jo does for the seasons.

This wall did not disappoint with the cuttings and beautiful message.

Do you read Magnolia magazine? I love the inspiration inside each issue.

I am learning each year more and more about gardening. If you’ve been following me for a bit, you’ve seen my vegetable garden, pumpkin patch and orchard at our getaway, Badger Hollow.

This year I’m hoping to add some flowers for cutting around too. I’m also participating in the Better Homes & Gardens One Room Challenge in April to spruce up a potting shed on the property. I’m excited to have you follow along and see the progress week by week!

SUBSCRIBE HERE so you don’t miss any posts!

Magnolia Bakery

The one thing we did not do, was sample the cupcakes. Now for some of you I’m sure that would be the Must Do item on your Magnolia bucket list, but the line was so long we decided not to take time for it.

The addition of the phrase ALL GOOD is oh so good!

Magnolia Seed and Supply

As I mentioned before I’m excited for all that lies ahead this Spring for my growing gardens and my skills. I’m learning as I go and having fun just trying things, reading a lot and asking a lot of questions. I don’t naturally have green thumbs.

So I was so drawn to all the flowers around Magnolia.

I’m also a vintage vehicle lover so this display had my heart!

As other places around The Silos grounds the seating and gathering spots were gorgeous!

These raised beds were amazing.

I love the look and impact using just one color of the same flower can do in an area.

How fun is this little fort with the mushroom stools!

Again, the impact of all pink tulips and the bounty of terra cotta pots. The shed has me swooning!

Inside The Feed and Seed shop were beautiful gardening items for inside and outside the home.

The Details

The attention to detail at Magnolia was what put it over the top. Everything was so clean and well maintained and happy people were everywhere- customers and staff alike.

They make things easy, like shipping things home that won’t fit in your suitcase.

They have clear organization and lots of activities to connect with those you came with of all ages.

You get to leave with lots of fun memories!

Thanks so much for following along on my trip! It’s been fun to hear your Magnolia stories, just after posting part one of my series yesterday. I hope this encourages you to explore some new or favorite places near or far. Maybe you’ve even found some inspiration for your own home and gardens.

Be sure to check back tomorrow for part three!

A girls’ trip to Texas for Spring at the Silos at Magnolia in Waco with a stop in my hometown of Waxahachie for antiquing.

Last year one of my best friends, Carolin, who lives a state away, asked if I wanted to join her for Spring at the Silos. I quickly said yes! I love any chance I get to hang out with her and I may have been the only person left in the country who hadn’t visited Magnolia yet.

Carolin had picked this weekend because it was a special event weekend, Spring at the Silos. We would be enjoying a special rooftop luncheon and there would be special vendors to shop up and down the streets surrounding the grounds.

They just celebrated Spring at the Silos 2023 the past two weekends.

There was another reason I was excited to go. I’m from Texas. I lived in Dallas until I was in fifth grade and then we moved 20 miles south to a charming small town called Waxahachie.

We moved to have an average with could keep our horses on. My sister and I competed in Three Day Eventing.

I LOVED living on our ranch and in this special little town.

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

To Texas

I flew down a day earlier than Carolin and spent an evening with a few of my high school girlfriends. We went out for dinner (Tex Mex of course) and slumber partied talking ’til the wee hours of the morning.

The next day, I headed back to the airport to pick up Carolin and start heading South. It’s such an easy drive from DFW down to Waco.

A Stop in My Hometown

Half an hour from DFW and an hour north of Waco, right off I-35 is Waxahachie, Texas. It’s definitely worth the detour.

It’s always fun for me to go back and see how much has changed, how much hasn’t and how much it’s growing!

Waxahachie is a historic cotton town full of Gingerbread houses and an iconic courthouse.

It was known as Little Hollywood for all the movies that have filmed there. If you are looking for an amazing movie to watch take time to see Places in the Heart with Sally Field.

Lately Yellowstone’s Prequel 1883 has done some filming there. And out near our ranch, in Midlothian is where they film the series The Chosen.

Downtown Waxahachie

We headed straight to downtown Waxahachie. When you leave the highway to head downtown it takes you down a beautiful street lined with beautiful historic homes. Every Summer Waxahachie holds the Gingerbread Trail Home Tours where several homes are featured and you can take tours.

Downtown has shops, restaurants, businesses, the old theater and Rogers Hotel all around the square with the courthouse in the middle.

Our goal was to do a little shopping and antiquing as I took this trip down memory lane. It was also to eat lunch at The Dove’s Nest.

The Dove’s Nest has beautiful shopping with antiques, home goods and gifts all displayed beautifully.

It’s also home to The Tea Room with some of the most delicious items on the menu I will forever crave and miss. So when I get the chance I must stop there. The orange iced tea is what to order first.

The Tea Room was also my first job. I was a waitress there for a few years in high school and had so much fun!

And if I have nothing else, I have to get the Chocolate Chip Bourbon Pecan Pie. They gave me an extra fork in case I wanted to share with Carolin. (I did 😉 )

Around the corner is another antique shop worth visiting, Gingerbread Antiques.

If you love to grill and BBQ you may have already heard of Meat Church. It’s based in Waxahachie and worth stopping in or ordering their spices and products online.

Their spices are one of my favorite Christmas gifts from my parents.

Just off the square is a great antique and salvage shop. I love visiting great shops like these I’m sharing not just to find great treasures, but to be inspired.

As a shop owner myself, I love seeing how other stores do things, what they are selling, how they are merchandised.

What kept running through my mind the whole time was that next trip, I’m driving and bringing the trailer!!

I’m so anxious to get back for another visit with friends and to shop.

When we were done shopping we pulled into the Sonic to grab cherry limeades before heading to Waco.

I left Waxahachie after graduating high school to head to Coe College, in Iowa. I met my husband there who was from Wisconsin. We lived in Iowa for several years after college and getting married. Then, moved to his home state in 2003.

My parents moved to Montana over 20 years ago. They spent several years going back and forth between Texas and the mountains, but ended up moving full there full time.

So I only get back to Texas maybe once a year now to see friends. And I hadn’t been to Waco since 2002 maybe, when my baby brother graduated from Baylor. And that was pre Magnolia.

Our Waco Hotel

Carolin had said I could pick where we stayed and I was more than happy to accept the task. One of my favorite things in the world are boutique hotels! They are so special. I love seeing how creatively they decorate and make guests feel special. Sometimes I pick where to travel just because there’s a hotel there I want to stay at.

Right across a little street from The Silos is the Pivovar Hotel. It’s so charming and made the trip so easy. We could go back and forth as often as we wanted from the Magnolia grounds to our room. It also had an amazing restaurant.

Pivotar Hotel Waco, Texas

I wrote a blog post about my stay there as part of a series I did on Boutique Hotels. You can read more about it and see more photos of the beautiful inside HERE.

Pivovar Hotel, Waco, TX

Spring at The Silos

When we arrived in Waco the Silos were open for another hour before closing for the day. Just enough time to walk around and get a lay of the land.

Carolin had been a few times before, to their Fall event and the Magnolia Marathon, but it was the first time for me.

It worked out so well, because the crowds were gone. We almost had it to ourselves. The weather was also beautiful that day, and coming from snow covered Wisconsin, I relished it!

Spring at the Silos

Magnolia Grounds

As I mentioned before as a shop owner myself I love visiting well appointed and styled shops. I also LOVE being surrounded by creative people who take big dreams and make them reality. And Magnolia is exactly that.

It was so fun to see how they had laid everything out and created this special space.

Magnolia Home holds beautiful home decor and furniture. I’ll share inside photos of all the buildings in a post tomorrow.

It wasn’t just the beautiful buildings that made me stop often to take things in, it was the landscaping and all the attention to detail.

Everything was so clean and well maintained.

It was fun to see some of the buildings that I had seen go from dream to reality on Fixer Upper or in Magnolia Magazine like the church they moved and restored.

It was such a charming and peaceful spot.

In the courtyard in front of the church were six cottages, each selling a different theme of items: Bath & Body, Gentleman, Women, Stationary…

One really neat area was the whiffle ball field. I’m smitten by whiffle ball anyways because of how much my husband loves it and my boys.

At our first house, my husband put up a net and lights to play whiffle ball with his friends and as time went on our sons played nonstop in the yard or driveway of each home we moved to.

The Silos field is on the site of a historic field they wanted to honor. The next day when we went back over to spend time at The Silos, there were kids and families happily playing on the field.

Food Trucks

What I love more than the food in food trucks, are the trucks themselves. I’m a sucker for vintage campers and vehicles and love the creative way they get used.

The black Magnolia Table trailer was so classy and I loved the quote on it! “The Good Ol’ Days

Magnolia Table Food Truck Quote

Yes to each and every Airstream! Though I didn’t get one of the famous Magnolia cupcakes, I did admire the bakery and the camper. The lines were so long the next day at the bakery, I didn’t need a cupcake that badly.

I love the blue of Maggies and the old fashioned signage!

One of the things I loved most about the Magnolia grounds were all the spots to sit and gather. By these food trucks was this little table. I also love all their signage, branding and classy mix of materials used.

Even the bathroom area has beautiful signage and was planned into the design beautifully.

I love the old water fountains and the continuation of the greens, blacks and whites.

Magnolia Press

If you’ve been following me for a while then you know I’m a coffee girl so visiting Magnolia Press was a must. I didn’t wait in line for the cupcake, but I did for the coffee. (The line wasn’t too long though).

One of the other fun parts about coming to visit in Spring, when it’s still cold at home Up North, was seeing the tulips coming up here in Waco.

I love how they planted just white ones in the planters out in front of the Press.

The nod toward nostalgia is also something I love, in the architecture, the styling and signage throughout Magnolia.

Again, all the wonderful spots to sit are so inviting and encourage connecting with each other.

I not only found inspiration for my shop while visiting, but also for my homes. The grasses in the black planter would look amazing at our getaway Badger Hollow.

These stacks of wood remind me of how we stack our wood on the sides of our fireplace indoors. I love it outside here too, as well as the terra cotta pots on the mantel.

Though we didn’t eat on the grounds, other than for The Spring at the Silos rooftop lunch (I’ll share in tomorrow’s post), it was fun to see options!

I mean who doesn’t love a grilled cheese? There was a time period in my oldest daughter’s life when that was all she wanted to eat!

I was so thankful for this quick hour walking around before they closed for the night and the few people that were around because I was able to get so many great photos!

I loved all these picnic tables with the stripped awnings. Black and white stripped umbrellas are one of the things I decorate with at my shop. They are such a happy feature!

The “Brady Bunch” grass around keeps everything looking clean, fresh and pretty. By tomorrow when we come back over the stage beneath the Silos will be full of entertainment, one musician after another taking their turn. And the grass area will be full of people sitting, eating, hanging out and playing.

It was such fun to see so much in bloom around.

I’ll share more of the gardens and shop interior photos in tomorrow’s post so keep following along.

It’s been fun to share and write about this fun trip and remember all the fun we had. I can’t wait to go on another adventure!

I would love to hear about your trip there and what you loved most, or if you are one of the few like me who hadn’t been and you are still waiting to go, what are you most excited to see?

When looking for a wonderful getaway, plan a stay at The Charmant Hotel in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.

As part of my Boutique Hotel Stays series I’m sharing a stay at The Charmant Hotel in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Sometimes I only think of big cities as having amazing hotels, but it’s worth researching in smaller towns too to see if there are any special places to stay, there may be a gem like The Charming.

Graduate Hotel Evanston, IL

Two years ago our family started looking for a getaway property in Southern Wisconsin. We found land we were interested just south of LaCrosse. While we were looking my husband and I stayed at The Charmant, a 67-room luxury boutique hotel in downtown La Crosse.

This boutique hotel may be my favorite of all I’ve stayed in so far.

The Charmant is located in a renovated candy factory from 1898. They kept many of the original architectural details like the maple wood flooring, the wood beams, and the exposed brick. The name comes from Charmant, a premium line of chocolates produced by the candy company. Charmant also the French word for charming.

LaCrosse

When I was in college in Iowa we would go up to LaCrosse to go snow skiing at Mt. LaCrosse.

Twenty years later I came back to LaCrosse. If my college aged self could have seen into the future! I’m now married and the mom of five!

LaCrosse is a neat town that I want to spend more time exploring. It sits on the Mississippi River with Minnesota on the other side. My favorite thing about LaCrosse so far is exploring the antique shops downtown.

The Rooms

Staying in boutique hotels is so wonderful because they typically have amazing lobbies to hang out in, wonderful bars and restaurants and luxurious rooms to relax in.

When you check into the hotel they give you a little tray of chocolates and chocolate memorabilia is displayed throughout the lobby and in the hotel rooms.

The exposed hardness of the original brick is softened by the draperies, bedding and other soft fabrics.

On our first trip to the Charmant, I tried Fieldnotes Gin from LaCrosse Distilling Company in a Gin and Tonic and it was the best one I have ever had. The hotel had some bottles in the room and also served it at the bar. I love the labeling of the bottles as much as the taste.

The owners of LaCrosse Distilling Company also owns The Charmant.

I love including anything local to a home so after this we stocked our getaway home with Fieldnotes.

Downstairs, just outside the lobby is The Parlour coffee shop. In the room were wooden tokens to get a free cup of coffee.

The bathrooms are beautiful and spa like.

I love the modern amenities they have while still keeping classic touches.

I was also excited to see that they carry my favorite brand of soaps and lotions, C.O. Bigelow. The fragrance of the lavender peppermint is one of the most relaxing smells. I even keep a little bottle of lotion in my purse. If I feel any slight anxiety or a small headache the smell takes it away.

The old photographs and candy company advertising are all hung in a gallery wall in a variety of frames off center of the bed. I have never seen this done before and it was beautiful.

The website claims that guests can still smell the sweet candy aroma from the original factory.

The Details

Beautiful touches like muted carpets, thoughtfully curated furniture and retro-style lighting fixtures fill the rooms which are each different.

The original wood floors show decades of ware.

They built a wardrobe front onto the closet.

Custom touches like branded coasters show their attention to detail.

Restaurant, Bar & Coffee Shop

The Restaurant was delicious. We’ve eaten several times there now for dinner and breakfast. They serve French inspired dishes

In the lobby is a beautiful bar & lounge serving craft beer, wine, and cocktails. You can also get some of the things off the restaurant’s menu.

There’s a Rooftop Terrace that serves handcrafted cocktails seasonally. I haven’t been there yet when its been open, but I can’t wait to try.

By the check in desk, there’s a treats counter where you can get handmade chocolates any time of day.

I loved the blue and white dishes they use in the restaurant.

The Parlour has great coffee and lots of seating options serving until two in the afternoon each day.

A few other perks of The Charmant:

  • House Car Service
  • Fitness Center
  • Dog Friendly

Be sure to add The Charmant and a trip to LaCrosse to your bucket list!
