As I’m sure you do, I spend a lot of time in the kitchen! We have lived in several homes over the years and I can tell you that the layout of not just the kitchen space, but the design of the kitchen in the floor plan of the house is very important. I passionately loved our last home, a 1930’s tudor, and it had a gorgeous kitchen, but it often kept me alone in the closed off space while family would be in another room. That takes the fun out of a lot of kitchen jobs!
Our kitchen in the cabin is open to the dining room. It makes serving meals easy. The kids gravitate to doing homework, projects, coloring at the kitchen counter or dining room table. That keeps me in the loop and happy! A wall with large curved openings keeps the kitchen from being completely open to the Great Room and rest of the house, but leaves it where what’s going on in both spaces is accessible.
Green cabinets, twig drawer and cabinet pulls and my thermos collection add rustic touches to our cabin kitchen.
Every time I find a new thermos for my collection, I think it’s my favorite. But, I really love them all. The green picnic basket I found in an antique booth, but the brown one on the left was one of my parents’ wedding presents when they got married in 1970. It’s in great shape with all the pieces still inside. Lucky me!!
I change often what is in the space in front of my sink. This photo was taken this winter. I leave some of my Christmas decorations out, the ones that can still add some pretty touches to winter decor as well, like these glitter trees I found at Home Goods and the glitter deer I found at a dollar store.
A candle is always going in the kitchen, usually it’s pine. When we were first looking for a home Up North one of the homes we looked at a few times always had a pine scented candle going and the second I walked in the door it connected me to the place.
There are a lot of fun ways to add pops of red to the kitchen, like with this toaster. The red buffalo plaid plate was a gift from my mom this Christmas from Target.
I like the glass front cabinets in the kitchen, it’s a fun way to display pieces I want to get to easily and also show off. I found these buffalo plaid bowls and the Winter Wonderland platter on a trip to Kohl’s and smiled all the way home at my luck! I’m still smiling!! Vintage cake stands are also treasures to me. I love using them for just about everything, muffins just taste better when served on a pretty glass cake stand.
Our red radio is one of our families favorite items in the entire house! The first thing I do in the morning is turn it on and turning it off is the last thing we do at night.
