Some of my favorite summer memories happen in the garden.

There’s something special about watering flowers in the early morning, gathering containers filled with cheerful blooms, and watching a garden change and grow throughout the season. Whether it’s a vintage wagon overflowing with flowers, a galvanized container repurposed as a planter, or a pot of bright red geraniums on the porch, the simplest garden moments often become the most memorable.

Today, I’m sharing a few favorite ideas from around White Arrows Home that celebrate vintage style, beautiful blooms and the joy of spending time outdoors.
Vintage
I love using vintage containers to hold my plants and this old metal wagon is one of my favorites. Later in the Summer heading into Fall, I can change up the plantings for the season.

Galvanized
For several of my containers, I simply set the already potted plant inside the container. I did this with one of my Skotch Koolers because I didn’t want to actually fill it with dirt. It also saves a lot of time.
Red and Yellow
I love decorating with red and yellow blooms around the house.

Geraniums
Geraniums are my favorite summer flower for the cabin.
How To
If you’d like to turn a vintage treasure into a planter, keep these simple tips in mind:
- Make sure the container has drainage holes so excess water can escape.
- Use small stones in the bottom for water to pool so roots to not become waterlogged.
- Give the container a good cleaning before planting.
- Add a liner if needed to help protect the container and hold soil in place.
- Use quality potting soil suited to your plants.
- Choose flowers or greenery that fit the size of the container and the amount of sun it receives.
- Keep weight in mind if you plan to move it throughout the season.
The beauty of vintage containers is that no two are exactly alike. Old wagons, galvanized tubs, watering cans and wooden crates can all become charming homes for your favorite blooms.
