Skotch Kooler has always been the latter. As a collector of vintage Skotch, I love mixing the nostalgic pieces into my home today.
When I had the opportunity to become the new owner of this iconic American brand, I knew it was about so much more than acquiring a company. It was about becoming the steward of a legacy. One that has been woven into family picnics, lake days, road trips, backyard gatherings, and campfire memories for generations.
As someone who has always believed that the best moments in life happen around a table, on a dock, by a campfire, or with family and friends, Skotch Kooler felt like coming home.
A Story That Began More Than a Century Ago
The roots of Skotch Kooler trace back to 1919, when Hamilton Sheet Metal Company began manufacturing practical metal products in Ohio. Eventually they created a simple metal bucket designed to keep groceries cool on the way to the lake and fish cold on the way home. Functional? Absolutely. Fashionable? Not quite.
Everything changed in 1952.
Industrial designer Petra Cabot transformed that ordinary bucket into what she famously called “the best-looking bucket anybody ever saw.” She wrapped it in its now-famous red, black, and yellow Wallace tartan plaid, added leather accents, and unknowingly created one of America’s most recognizable outdoor accessories.
Throughout the 1950s and 60s, Skotch Kooler became synonymous with stylish outdoor entertaining. It appeared at beaches, parks, cabins, tailgates, and even made its way into popular culture. Families passed them down. Collectors treasured them. The plaid became instantly recognizable.
Although the brand eventually disappeared from stores, it was lovingly revived in 2017 by a group of passionate enthusiasts who believed this American classic deserved another chance. Then, in 2025 the next chapter began as ownership passed into my hands here in Minocqua, Wisconsin, a place where lakes, cabins, hospitality, and outdoor living are part of everyday life.
Why I Said Yes
If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you know I love creating beautiful spaces where people gather.

I love to use it as an everyday work bag too. It’s a perfect fit for my computer.
The Skotch Grill
Small enough to travel but designed to make a statement, the portable Skotch Grill brings the joy of cooking outdoors wherever your adventures take you. With its double-wall construction, removable firepot, and plaid serving-tray lid, it’s as beautiful as it is functional.
