I have participated in Bible Studies in many different ways over the years and love the insights I get from great teaching in the lessons and coordinating workbooks and the other women in my study groups.
My weekly church study has around 50 women in it! The group is large, but we sit in table groups facilatated by a group leader where we can have more intimate conversations and make sure everyone gets a chance to share.
I’m also in a Bible Study that meets monthly with a group of around ten friends in my home. One of my favorite parts of this group is that it has grown to also include several of the members young adult daughters. Its so fun to get perspectives from different ages.
Here are some of my favorite Bible Studies I’ve done in the past few years. You may have done some of them as well or others by these same authors.
Priscilla Shirer
Some of my favorite Bible Studies have been by Priscilla Shirer. I’m always in awe of how she can take a few verses of scripture and pull them apart into a series of lessons that go so deep and help me see God’s word in new ways.
The workbooks give daily “homework” that easily fits in my time schedule and really helps me come away with more practical wisdom and understanding.
Priscilla’s video lessons at the end of the week captivate me and get me excited to learn more.
Here are a few of my favorites by Priscilla that I have done recently.
Gideon
In Gideon, Priscilla takes us on a compelling journey through the life of Gideon, a somewhat unlikely hero from the Bible. With her engaging storytelling, she explores themes of fear, doubt, and the power of God’s calling. she dives into Gideon’s story to show how God can use anyone, no matter their insecurities, to accomplish great things. She invites readers to reflect on their own fears and how God equips us to step out in faith, even when we feel inadequate. Packed with practical insights and relatable examples, this book encourages us to trust God’s strength over our weaknesses and embrace the unique purpose He has for each of us. Whether you’re familiar with Gideon’s story or hearing it for the first time, Priscilla’s approach makes it feel relevant and inspiring for today’s challenge
Elijah
In Elijah, Priscilla takes us on an eye-opening exploration of the life and ministry of the prophet Elijah. She highlights Elijah’s incredible faith, his moments of doubt, and the powerful ways God worked through him. Diving into themes like spiritual drought, burnout, and the importance of listening for God’s whispers in our lives, she encourages us to reflect on our own spiritual journeys, reminding us that even the most faithful among us can face tough seasons. This book not only deepens our understanding of Elijah’s story but also inspires us to trust in God’s provision and guidance, no matter what challenges we face. It’s a great read for anyone looking to strengthen their faith and see how God can use us, just as He did with Elijah.
Discerning the Voice of God
Discerning the Voice of God is a heartfelt journey into understanding how to recognize God’s voice in our lives. Priscilla shares relatable stories and solid biblical insights, making it easy to connect with her message. She emphasizes the importance of prayer and diving into scripture to tune our hearts to what God is saying. With practical tips for cutting through the distractions and doubts that often cloud our spiritual ears, she guides us in learning to hear God clearly amidst the noise of everyday life. This book isn’t just a guide; it’s an invitation to deepen our relationship with God and embrace the purpose He has for us. She Reads Truth
I first became a fan of She Reads Truth when I ordered an Advent reading from them years ago. Since then I’ve ordered their Advent books each year. I love that they do a book for women and a similar one for men. At Thanksgiving each year I gift them to my kids and we are all able to read along during the season together. It’s become a very special tradtion with my sons and daughters.
This past Summer I started leading a weekly Bible Study with a friend and we invited a bunch of girls we knew, from a variety of denominations and at different points in their faith walk.
In looking for a Bible Study that would help bring us all to a common starting point Open Your Bible by Raechel Myers and Amanda Bible Williams was such a great choice.
Open Your Bible
Open Your Bible is a refreshing invitation to dive deeper into Scripture. Amanda and Raechel break down the importance of not just reading the Bible, but truly engaging with it, and they do so in a warm and relatable way. They encourage readers to see the Bible as a living, breathing source of hope and guidance, rather than just a dusty book on a shelf. With practical tips and personal stories, the girls show how to make Bible study a part of your everyday life. Their goal is to help you feel empowered to open your Bible, understand it better, and apply its truths to your own journey. Whether you’re new to studying the Bible or looking to reignite your passion for it, this book is like having a conversation with friends who genuinely want to see you grow in your faith.
Jen Wilkin
Abide
In Abide, Jen Wilkin invites us to explore what it truly means to live in close relationship with God through His Word. With her signature blend of deep insight and approachable language, Jen emphasizes the importance of not just reading the Bible, but allowing it to shape our lives and deepen our faith. She encourages readers to cultivate a habit of abiding in Scripture, highlighting how this practice can transform our understanding of God and ourselves. Through practical guidance and thoughtful reflections, Jen helps us navigate the challenges of staying connected to God in a busy world. If you’re looking to grow in your faith and experience a more intimate relationship with God, Jen is passionate about helping you thrive spiritually.
My current Bible Study is Jen Wilken’s Sermon on the Mount.
In Sermon on the Mount, Jen takes us on an insightful journey through one of the most impactful sections of Scripture. She unpacks Jesus’ teachings in a way that’s both relatable and thought-provoking, encouraging us to dig deeper into what it means to live out His words in our daily lives. Jen explores key themes like humility, mercy, and the true nature of righteousness, making it clear that Jesus was calling us to a radical way of living. She helps us see how these teachings are still relevant today. This book is a refreshing guide that challenges us to embody the values of God’s Kingdom and live out our faith with purpose and integrity.
Lysa TerKeurst
I had a season where I wasn’t in fellowship for my Bible Studies after just moving to a new town, but still wanted to dive deeper into Scripture in a meaningful way even in my waiting to connect with new friends. I used Lysa TerKeurst’s Finding I Am.
Lysa TerKeurst invites us to embark on a personal journey of discovering our true identity in Christ in Finding I Am. Through her relatable insights, Lysa shares how the seven “I Am” statements of Jesus can transform the way we see ourselves and our relationship with God. She addresses common struggles, like feeling inadequate or lost, and offers encouragement and hope through Scripture. Lysa combines her personal experiences with biblical truths, making it easy to connect and reflect on our own lives. This book is not just about gaining knowledge; it’s a heartfelt invitation to deepen your faith and embrace the fullness of who God says you are.
I have a group of friends that I’m reading through the New Testament with right now. It’s a three month plan with The Bible Recap with Tara Leigh Cobble on the Bible App. Everything is right in the app giving you the daily reading plan and then a video recap from Tara Leigh and her “God Shot” for that scripture. The app even has a spot where those of us reading together can leave discussion thoughts in a chat.
There are so many more studies that are wonderful to do, many can be found through Lifeway.
Most of the books come with video access so you can preview, watch and rewatch any of the teachings that go along with the readings.
There are also resources if you want to lead the study for a group of women.
If you are interested in doing a Bible Study you can either join in with an active group or pull together your own. You may have several friends who are interested in doing one too.
But start by checking with what your own church is offering in Women’s Ministry. They may have a variety of options on different topics and at different times and days.
If you decide to lead one on your own you can choose to host in your home and use one of the studies with videos included and you can help lead discussion around it guided by the prompts in the study books.
Leading a Bible Study
Here are some tips to help you create a meaningful and engaging environment:
- Pray for Guidance: Begin with prayer, asking for wisdom and guidance as you lead. This sets a spiritual tone for the group.
- Choose Relevant Material: Select Bible study materials that resonate with the group’s needs and interests. Consider themes like identity, faith, or overcoming challenges.
- Create a Welcoming Atmosphere: Foster a safe and open environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing. Encourage honesty and vulnerability.
- Encourage Participation: Ask open-ended questions that invite discussion. Make sure everyone has a chance to share their thoughts and insights.
- Be Flexible: While it’s good to have a plan, be open to the direction the conversation takes. Sometimes the most valuable discussions happen unexpectedly.
- Incorporate Different Learning Styles: Use a mix of activities, such as reading, discussion, prayer, and even creative exercises, to engage everyone.
- Foster Relationships: Encourage bonding among members outside of study time through group outings or service projects. Building relationships enhances the study experience.
- Lead by Example: Share your own experiences and struggles in faith, showing that it’s okay to be imperfect. Authenticity can inspire others to open up.
- Follow Up: After meetings, check in with group members to see how they’re doing. This shows you care and helps build deeper connections.
- End with Prayer: Close each session with a prayer, inviting God to guide and support each participant in their personal journeys.
