Northwoods fall demands a hearty soup to ward off the chill.
Sweater weather gets all the attention, but we think soup season deserves its own celebration.
When the days turn crisp and darkness arrives before dinner, nothing beats chili, chowder, wild rice soup or a slow-simmered stew on the stove.
But before you grab the everyday cereal bowls, consider giving this comfort food a prettier place to land.

Fall is the perfect excuse to collect vintage soup bowls. Look for chunky stoneware, old restaurant ware, transferware, pottery crocks and mismatched finds in autumn shades.
A table filled with vessels collected one at a time is far more interesting and gives you something to hunt for at flea markets and thrift shops. Add vintage soup spoons, a wooden breadboard and cloth napkins, and make soup night a festive occasion.
Don’t overlook the bowl.

Pick up a round loaf of crusty bread, slice off the top and hollow out the center to create an edible vessel. Save the bread you remove for dipping or toast it into croutons.
If that’s not your style, add in some warm cornbread, a hunk of sourdough slathered with butter or a grilled cheese sandwich cut diagonally. (Soup just tastes better that way.)
Set the table, put the bread within reach and ladle it up.
