If you are taking the tour in order and coming over from Sonata Home Design, welcome to my lakeside log cabin home in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. I’m so glad you are here!
The view outside my windows inspires my decor inside and no time more than in the winter.
Winter lasts a long time here in the Northwoods where our first snow falls in October and the last flakes may come into April.
We can have over 100 inches of snow.
The lake behind our house freezes so solid you can drive a truck on it!
Every single year we are amazed at how the same lake we swim and boat in all Summer can be the same lake we snowmobile and skate on.
We embrace Winter here enjoying the recreational activities it provides.
And we also embrace the cozy moments warming up by the fireplace too.
Our great room is a hub in our home and I love to decorate the mantel for the seasons like this snow themed styling.
One year I hung giant snowflakes and ice skates from our boat shack.
A warming hut sign and some old vintage sports equipment gave a fun lakeside view for the cold months.
Vintage Sports Equipment
The next year I brought that decor inside and onto the mantel.
Oversized Objects
Our stone fireplace extends high in the vaulted room of our big beamed great room.
That gives me a lot of room to be creative and add big, bold statement pieces.
Giant snowflakes, a vertical warming hut sign, black skis crossed over the carved moose mount, all balance the space out.
Vintage Books
I collect vintage hard back books, especially ones with forest or lake themes.
Pulling out some of the books to style in by size, color or title helps add a layer of interest.
When I styled the mantel I pulled out my white, brown and cream books.
On top of the books I stacked a wooden block painted with a snowflake.
I also added some cut glass votive holders, that give the illusion of ice.
Framed Images
Believe it or not, we do pray for snow.
Maybe not in April, but definitely early in the season and throughout the fun winter months.
Taking a favorite phrase and blowing it up inside a frame is a simple way to tie everything together.
Here’s a view of the mantel in Spring when the snow melts and we are excited to see greens again.
Thanks so much for stopping by!

Kristin, this was such a fun post to linger and enjoy. I love how you decorated the mantel. I’d want to snuggle up in front of your fireplace any day. Loved the moose! I saw a few when hiking years back in Maine at Baxter State Park. I’ve never seen one in upstate NY though. lol
