Road Trip to The Pioneer Woman Mercantile Part Two ~ White Arrows Home

A ROAD TRIP TO THE PIONEER WOMAN MERCANTILE, with great shopping and great food makes a wonderful girls’ getaway.

In part one of this Road Trip Series I shared about how a few friends and I checked off a bucket list adventure to visit The Pioneer Woman Mercantile in Pawhuska, Oklahoma on our way down to Dallas.

Traveling from Wisconsin, we drove just a little out of the way for this stop, but it was so worth it.

We stayed in the cutest rental, The Farmhouse Relatively Near the Prairie, walking distance to the Mercantile and it was the perfect spot, charming, comfortable and decorated beautifully. Read about it and see more photos in THIS POST.

After arriving the night before, a delicious pizza dinner on the back patio and wonderful night’s sleep I arose to enjoy coffee and quiet time on the Farmhouse’s front porch. I rocked and soaked in the bird sounds of a Summer morning.

Then when all the girls were up we strolled a few blocks down to the Mercantile. What bliss, to just stroll! No timeline, no rush. Time to stop and look at the architecture and treasures along the way. And there were lots of them! What an interesting downtown Pawhuska has.

This sign gave me a huge smile.

We have a Little Free Library at White Arrows Home and we all loved this twist on the idea of having a Blessing Box to share pantry items and necessities for those in need.

As we drove through this part of Oklahoma I was amazed by how beautiful the rolling green hills were. I had pictured that it would be flat prairies, but was pleasantly surprised by the landscape.

Pawhuska’s main street downtown was very long and full of old brick buildings. Many with porches along the front.

One of the things we were amazed by were all the signs and window lettering. As we visited some of the shops they shared that the book, Flowers of the Killer Moon had been written about true historic events in their area and a movie to be released this Fall was filmed here.

The movie, directed by Martin Scorsese, stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro sharing the story of the Osage Nation as they became wealthy almost overnight when oil was struck at the turn of the 20th century. Crime, including murder, soon came as people moved in to swindle the Osage of their wealth.

My husband read the book several years ago. I plan to before the movie comes out. I’m looking forward to it, especially after our visit to Pawhuska.

The tile entry from the old JCPenny was still on the ground even though the building is gone.

I love looking at old buildings and the artistry and craftsmanship that went into making them.

What a cool idea this was to add the brands to the side of this building and a park space where a building once stood. I love the addition of green spaces.

Up above you can see the Courthouse.

Another long flight of steps takes you up above from the main street below.

On the front of an old bank hangs this patina and stained glass robbery alarm.

I love old vehicles and was instantly charmed by the truck out in front of The Merc built from old truck parts found on the Drummond Ranch over the years and put together by a family friend.

Every detail of the Mercantile was done well and beautifully, just look at the sign, even branded with Ree’s bright flower accents. See and her husband spent years fixing up this hundred year old building so they could welcome people from all over to their shop, bakery and restaurant.

As a shop owner myself, I love to see how other stores are merchandised and the Mercantile was great inspiration. They have variety of fun items at different price points appealing all all types of buyers. Something I’ve always tried to have too.

I loved the lighting everywhere like these big chandeliers. And the flower garlands and gatherings throughout the store were a lovely touch.

There were touches of ranch life everywhere to take home with you.

Little spots to sit while you wait for others to be done shopping were a nice touch.

A super fun area was all the salt & pepper shakers for sale.

What mercantile would be complete without the opportunity to buy a bag of marbles.

And again, the flowers everywhere were festive and pretty.

Their gift wrap station was a nice option for having things packaged up.

The branded items available were beautiful options for a souvenir to take home.

Big, wide stairs led up to the second floor bakery and coffee shop.

The decor upstairs was fun with lots of cozy options to gather and enjoy coffee, crepes and pastries.

It’s always fun to see how the bathrooms are decorated when you travel to great hotels, restaurants and shops.

We went to the Merc right when it opened at 7 a.m. After shopping a bit we had breakfast in the restaurant.

After ordering they brought us a plate of biscuits. We all agreed they were the best biscuits we’d ever had.

The lighting and decor in the restaurant was just as fun as the rest of the spaces.

I loved the vintage style dishes and glassware they used.

You can see their menus online and get an idea of the wonderful options. The french toast was amazing!

I often take photos of menus or enjoy peeking online because it can inspire my own meal planning back home.

One of my favorite parts was that they kept the old graphics uncovered on the wall.

We enjoyed a leisurely walk back to our rental peeking at more of the downtown and stopping in a few shops.

In one window I found a view of what the street looked like in it’s heyday.

Even thought our stop in Pawhuska was short, it was well worth it!

As we left and headed to Dallas we were stopped along the highway. We were worried it was a big accident. But, it was just a film crew shooting scenes for the movie Twister 2!

I’m looking forward to another road trip to Pawhuska and another fun girls’ getaway at some point. It would be fun to go back again! I highly recommend were we stayed (shared in my previous post) as well as taking the time to schedule eating at the Mercantile restaurant.

They also offer trips to The Lodge. If you are a fan of Ree’s cooking show, that would be a fun addition to the trip.
