Chase Your Dreams
We tend to think of the new year as the perfect time to begin goal setting and working toward a dream on our mind and heart.
For me, I am chasing dreams daily.
Each day I’m either working toward something or making adjustments to goals I have been striving for.
These dreams may be a big, lofty desires or they may be small changes I’m wanting to make.
Changes could be either taking a bad habit out of my life or adding a new healthy one in.
Here are some of the big dreams and little dreams I’ve been working on in the past few years:
- Restart a consistent workout routine
- Wake up at 5 am on workdays
- Open a brick and mortar shop
- Connect with friends regularly
- Begin a Podcast
- Write a Book
- Cut out added sugar in my diet
What I can tell you, is that some of my dreams have become reality.
Some I am still working on and some I tweaked and changed as I went, failed and learned.
How I view the dream chasing is as a journey, not a destination.
It’s a mindset.
An intentional mindset toward finding joy in the trying, learning new things about myself, my endeavors and what I’m capable of.
The capable part, the positive mindset, the resilience, it has a source.
A deep wellspring.
My faith in Jesus.
Here are eight tasks I do daily to make progress toward my dreams.
Pray
Throughout the day I talk to God about what I’m working on, what I’m dreaming about.
I ask for his guidance and that I will hear Him speak to me about what direction to go, what choices to make and what to spend my time on.
My biggest prayer is that what I do will bring glory to God in my endeavors, relationship and in my body, mind and spirit.
I hear Him answer me in many ways: some are through my thoughts, through verses and stories in the Bible, through trusted friends and in nature.
Daydream
Daydreaming is something I give myself permission to do.
Whatever our goals are, we need to give them time to muddle around in our minds and imagination.
It’s a a great practice to picture yourself achieving that goal and seeing yourself at the finish line.
When I’m working out I picture myself in the shape, strength and stamina I want to be in and it motivates me to keep working where I’m at.
Don’t let the daydreaming discourage you about how far you have to go, let it encourage you to what’s possible with prayer, patience, time and work.
Journal
Making lists.
Checking things off.
Writing and reflecting.
Getting my ideas, to dos and thoughts out of my mind and down on paper is a huge help to me.
There are so many ways to do this and its a fun activity to find what works for you.
Do you need the “old fashioned” way, like I do, of paper and pencil or do you enjoy virtual methods on your computer, phone or iPad?
I’m a pretty journal and paper calendar girl.
I keep several journals going and my to do list is extra “old school”.
College ruled paper in a beautiful binder is my go to.
A different day of the week is at the top of each page and I write out what my appointments and tasks are for that day.
Throughout the day I reference my notes moving things that don’t get accomplished to another page.
As I finish a day I crumple it up and recycle it.
Each night, I review what’s happening the next day day.
That’s my way. Enjoy finding yours.
Encouraging Words
My default is to encourage others.
But to do that I have to keep myself encouraged too.
That means I try to be careful about what I listen to, watch and read to keep it uplifting.
I’m conscious about who I spend a lot of time with.
And I leave reminders, quotes, verses and messages around my home where I can see them.
Quiet Time
If I’m rushing around all the time I will burn out, run out of energy and get exhausted.
Times of quiet and stillness must be in my day to let me refresh.
These are the times the planning, praying, journaling can help keep my thoughts in balance.
Schedule
Making time to workout, put attention on the details needed to move forward, get quiet, these things won’t happen daily if I don’t make a schedule.
I work best with a schedule that I follow for my day, especially my mornings that doesn’t let the day get away from me.
A few scheduling strategies that work well for me are:
- wake up as soon as my alarm goes off
- batch projects and tasks working on similar things all on one specific day or time
- set timers to increase focus
- listen to an audiobook I look forward to if I’m doing something where my mind can listen (cleaning, organizing, driving, walking…)
- do things I dread first and get them out of the way
Read
I look for books, articles and posts that can encourage me and teach me.
There are so many great teachers, leaders, speakers and writers we can glean information from so easily and affordably.
We can check in on the postings of a virtual mentor every day that can inspire us to keep dream chasing and be an example of what’s possible.
I read several books a month and fit them into my time with some easy strategies that may help you depending on what your goals are. READ HERE.
Keep it Simple
When I get overwhelmed with the goal ahead of me, I take my to do list and make it shorter.
Those daily lists I make, I will only add one item a day that will help me take a step forward, just one.
I just need to build on one successes at a time.
Chase those Dreams
Each day is a new day.
You may have great momentum one day and fail the next, but that doesn’t define you or what you are working on.
These tips will help you stay productive and positive.
As you work toward your dreams and goals, know I’m cheering you on.
