As the winter chill continues, I love to hibernate inside with a cozy blanket, a hot drink, and a good book.

But winter also offers amazing opportunities to experience adventures outdoors in a way that’s impossible during the warmer months.

The crisp air, snow-covered landscapes, and quieter surroundings create an atmosphere of peace and serenity that’s perfect for getting outside. The best part? You don’t have to spend a dime to enjoy it!

Here are seven fantastic (and free) ways to embrace the winter season and enjoy the fresh air:

1. Go for a Winter Hike

When the snow falls, favorite hiking trails transform into a magical winter wonderland. Put on some sturdy shoes or boots and head out for a hike. The crisp winter air is invigorating, and the scenery is breathtaking. Whether it’s a peaceful walk through the forest or a hike up a snow-dusted hill, there’s something incredibly refreshing about moving your body while taking in the winter sights.

2. Explore a Local Park

Winter parks are often less crowded than during the summer months, giving you a quiet and peaceful environment to enjoy nature. You can take a brisk walk, bring a thermos of tea and enjoy the scenery, or even just sit on a bench and appreciate the stillness around you. Many parks also offer free sledding hills, if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous!

3. Go Snowshoeing, Cross-Country Skiing or Skating

If you live in an area with snow, like I do, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are both great ways to explore your local trails. If you don’t own equipment, many places offer rentals, but there are also free areas where you can simply grab a pair of snowshoes or skis and venture into the snow-covered wilderness. The feeling of gliding through the snow is both peaceful and exhilarating.

In Boulder Junction, here in The Northwoods, they just added a skating ribbon, an ice trail through the woods to ice skate on.

4. Winter Wildlife Watching

Winter is an excellent time to watch wildlife as animals often forage for food during the colder months. Grab your binoculars (or just your eyes) and visit a nearby wildlife preserve or even a local park. Keep an eye out for birds, squirrels, deer, and even winter wildlife like foxes or snowshoe hares. The quiet of winter makes it easier to spot animals as they move about their natural habitats.

We love walking through the woods or taking our snowmobile around our property and look for tracks guessing which animals made them. It’s amazing to see how active the wildlife is even in the cold.

5. Take a Photography Walk

Winter offers a unique landscape that’s perfect for photography. Whether it’s the subtle hues of a snowy forest, the stark contrast of bare trees against a bright blue sky, or icicles hanging from branches, winter is full of photo-worthy moments.

You don’t need to be a professional photographer to capture the beauty around you—just take a walk with your phone or camera and see what catches your eye.

6. Stargazing on a Clear Night

Clear winter nights are perfect for stargazing. The cold air typically brings clearer skies, and with fewer clouds, the stars are brighter and more visible.

You don’t need a telescope to enjoy the night sky—just lie back on a blanket, grab a warm jacket, and watch the constellations twinkle overhead.

You can even use a stargazing app on your phone to identify constellations and planets.

Night Cabin

7. Take a Winter Bike Ride

Biking isn’t just a warm-weather activity. If you have a mountain bike or one with wide tires, you can enjoy a winter ride, even on snow-covered paths or trails.

The fresh air, crunch of snow beneath your tires, and the peacefulness of the winter landscape will make for a memorable ride. Just be sure to bundle up and take safety precautions when riding on slippery surfaces.

The Winter also opportunities to improve our physical and mental health. Embracing the outdoors in winter doesn’t just lift spirits—it can also have a lasting positive impact on our well-being. So, whether taking a brisk walk or skiing through snow-covered trails, here’s why getting outside in winter is a must:

1. Boosts Your Immune System

Exposing your body to cold weather in moderation can actually help strengthen your immune system. Studies have shown that being outside in cooler temperatures can increase the production of white blood cells, which help your body fight off illnesses.

Regular outdoor activity in winter, even something as simple as walking, can lower your chances of getting sick by improving overall immune function.

Bernese Mountain Dog

2. Increases Vitamin D Levels

During the winter months, many people struggle with a lack of sunlight, which can lead to lower levels of vitamin D—a vital nutrient for bone health, immune support, and mood regulation.

By spending time outside in the natural light, even on cloudy days, your body can absorb more vitamin D. This can help you maintain healthy bones, regulate your mood, and keep your energy levels up, even when the days are shorter.

3. Improves Mental Health

Being outside in winter offers numerous mental health benefits. Exposure to natural light helps to regulate your circadian rhythm, which is essential for maintaining good sleep patterns.

In addition, outdoor exercise releases endorphins, the “feel-good” chemicals that reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. The fresh air and peaceful surroundings can provide a much-needed mental break from daily stressors, helping to clear your mind and improve your mood.

When the sun is out I even move my workouts outside.

4. Enhances Cardiovascular Health

Cold-weather activities like hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, or even walking through the neighborhood all help to get your heart pumping. Exercising in winter challenges your body in a different way than warmer-weather activities.

The cold temperature forces your body to work harder to regulate its internal temperature, giving your cardiovascular system a boost. Regular outdoor exercise during winter can improve your heart health, increase circulation, and improve overall fitness.

5. Promotes Better Sleep

Getting outside in the winter can help you sleep better at night. Natural light exposure, even in smaller doses, helps to reset your internal clock. This can lead to deeper, more restful sleep. Plus, outdoor activities tire your muscles and relax your body, which can make falling asleep easier and more peaceful.

Cabin Bedroom Decor

6. Strengthens Your Lungs

Winter air is crisp and often dry, which can be a little harder to breathe for some. However, outdoor exercise in winter can actually help to strengthen your lungs.

Cold, dry air can stimulate deeper breathing, helping to increase lung capacity over time. For those with respiratory conditions like asthma, fresh outdoor air can help reduce inflammation and clear up congestion, as long as it’s not too cold or harsh.

7. Boosts Your Energy Levels

Spending time outside in winter can give you a natural energy boost. The cold air helps to stimulate circulation, making you feel more awake and alert. Plus, engaging in outdoor activities like walking or skiing releases endorphins, which can improve your mood and provide an overall sense of well-being. The increased blood flow can also help shake off feelings of fatigue, leaving you feeling refreshed and energized.

8. Improves Balance and Coordination

Winter activities often involve navigating slippery or uneven terrain, which can help improve your balance and coordination. Walking on snow-covered paths, hiking up icy hills, or participating in winter sports all require a certain level of agility and control. Over time, this can strengthen the muscles responsible for balance, improving overall stability and reducing the risk of falls and injuries.

9. Encourages Social Interaction

In the winter months, many people tend to huddle inside, but winter offers a unique chance to connect with others outside. Whether it’s walking with a friend, joining a local snowshoeing group, or simply enjoying a public event in your area, being outdoors can foster social connections.

Social interaction is essential for mental health, and spending time with others while being active outdoors can help strengthen relationships and increase feelings of happiness and belonging.

A favorite account to follow and encourage time outdoors is 1000 Hours Outside.

10. Increases Mindfulness and Presence

Winter provides a unique setting for mindfulness. The quiet, stillness of snowy landscapes or the beauty of winter sunsets can help you focus on the present moment. Whether you’re out for a walk or simply sitting outside, being surrounded by nature encourages a sense of peace and mindfulness that’s hard to achieve indoors. This practice of being present can reduce stress, increase self-awareness, and improve emotional well-being.

Winter doesn’t have to be a time for hibernation. In fact, it can be an excellent season to improve your health, boost your mood, and enhance your physical fitness.

By embracing the cold and stepping outside, you can enjoy the fresh winter air while reaping the many physical and mental health benefits that nature provides. So, bundle up, get outside, and take full advantage of what winter has to offer!

Though today we are such digitally connected world, maintaining close, meaningful and truly intimate relationships with friends and family who live far away can sometimes feel like a challenge. But we can use technology to our advantage. One of the simplest—and most enjoyable—ways to nurture those connections is by hosting virtual tea time over FaceTime, Zoom or other app. Keeping connecting over a drink face to face a comforting and timeless tradition.

Coffee at the cabin in vintage tea cup

A shared cup of tea, even from a distance, can provide a sense of intimacy, calm, and togetherness, helping to bridge the physical gap between loved ones. Whether you’re across the globe or just a few states apart, these creative ideas will make your virtual tea time something special and memorable.

Here are some creative ideas for hosting a virtual tea time that will make you feel closer to your loved ones, no matter where they are.

Choose a Theme

One of the joys of tea time is the opportunity to make it feel special. Adding a theme to your virtual tea gathering can bring an extra layer of fun and creativity. For instance, you could opt for:

  • Choosing a theme based on a particular country or culture. For example, a British afternoon tea with scones and finger sandwiches, a Japanese tea ceremony with matcha, or a Moroccan tea time with mint tea and pastries.
  • Celebrate the season with flavors that match the time of year—think spiced chai or apple cinnamon for fall, floral teas like jasmine or lavender for spring, or peppermint and citrus blends for winter.
  • Choose a book to read together and discuss it over your tea. You could pick a novel, a devotional, or even a collection of poetry. The discussions can add depth to your gathering, making it more meaningful.

During quarantine a few years ago I was doing many of these ideas with friends. Many from right in my hometown who I wasn’t able to meet with regularly, at that time, and others like high school friends I hadn’t talked to in years. It became a new way to connect I wanted to continue.

Tea in Wisconsin

Send a Tea Package in Advance

One of the best ways to make your virtual tea time feel connected is by sending your friend or family member a small tea package before your meeting. Whether it’s a curated selection of loose leaf teas, a set of teabags, or an assortment of fun tea accessories like a new mug or a tea infuser, the thoughtful gesture will elevate the experience.

You could also send small treats or baked goods like homemade scones, cookies, or biscuits to accompany the tea. The act of receiving a physical package before your virtual meeting will create anticipation and excitement, making the event feel more tangible.

At my shop, White Arrows Home, in Minocqua, Wisconsin we have an area known as The Dish Bar where you can select a vintage tea cup and saucer and then have it mailed to a friend with a note to join you for tea.

Vintage Dishes to Mix and Match

Incorporate Fun and Interactive Activities

Make your virtual tea time even more memorable by including an activity that everyone can enjoy together. Here are some ideas:

Show and Tell: Have everyone share something meaningful, like a book they’re reading, a family heirloom, or a favorite memory related to tea. It’s a great way to learn more about each other’s lives and deepen your connections.

Crafting or DIY: For a creative twist, consider adding a craft element while chatting.

Focus on Deep Conversations and Catching Up

One of the most beautiful aspects of a virtual tea time is the ability to sit back, relax, and focus on meaningful conversations. Set aside the distractions of life and focus on reconnecting. Let your tea time be an opportunity to:

  • Share your life updates: Talk about what’s been going on in your life, from the small day-to-day moments to the big events. Don’t rush; take your time to enjoy the conversation and really listen to one another.
  • Discuss personal growth or challenges: Tea time can be an excellent opportunity to discuss personal goals, spiritual journeys, or any struggles you may be going through. It can feel like a safe space to open up and share vulnerable moments, offering support and encouragement.
  • Reflect on past memories: Take a trip down memory lane by reminiscing about moments you’ve shared in person—whether it’s family holidays, trips, or even small, everyday moments that meant a lot.
  • Gratitude Sharing: Start the tea time by sharing one thing you are grateful for that week. It could be something small like a relaxing moment or something bigger, like a personal achievement. It’s a great way to set a positive tone for the conversation.
  • Themed Conversation Starters: Prepare a list of conversation prompts or questions to inspire meaningful discussion. Topics could include childhood memories, dreams and goals, favorite books or movies, or reflections on faith or spirituality. Keep the atmosphere light and supportive, and encourage everyone to share openly.
  • Prayer or Blessing Time: Consider closing the gathering with a time of prayer or a blessing. It’s a beautiful way to end the call, offering each other support, encouragement, and lifting up any needs or concerns.

Virtual tea times can be a great way to connect grandparents with their grandkids. Set a weekly date or make it at random times to celebrate special moments.

Virtual tea time is a beautiful way to stay connected with friends and family, even when distance separates you. By infusing your gatherings with thoughtful themes, shared activities, and meaningful conversation, you can transform a simple video chat into a delightful, memorable experience.

Whether it’s catching up on life, sharing a cup of tea, or engaging in lighthearted fun, virtual tea time allows us to nourish our relationships and create new memories, even from miles apart. So, brew your favorite tea, put on your coziest outfit, and start planning your next virtual tea time—it’s the perfect way to reconnect and refresh your spirit, no matter where you are.

And if tea isn’t your favorite, enjoy coffee, hot chocolate or even a glass of wine.

Winter brings its own unique charm—crisp air, snowy landscapes, and cozy moments spent indoors.

But it also offers a perfect opportunity to step outside your usual routine and try something new.

Whether you’re looking for a fun family activity, a way to spark your creativity, or just want to shake up your winter season, here are 10 creative ideas to make the most of the colder months that are both fun and cozy.

1. Go Ice Skating

Ice skating is a time-honored winter tradition that’s perfect for anyone looking to embrace the chilly season with a little movement.

Whether you choose to glide across an outdoor rink beneath twinkling holiday lights or warm up indoors at a local arena, ice skating offers a unique blend of fun and fitness.

It’s a great way to work out without feeling like you’re exercising—burning calories, strengthening muscles, and improving balance all while enjoying the winter air (or cozy indoor warmth).

backyard hockey, ice skating, northwoods living

Whether you’re a seasoned skater or a complete beginner, it’s an activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels.

Plus, many rinks offer rentals, so you don’t even need to own skates to join in the fun.

So, grab your friends, your family and hit the ice for a memorable winter outing!

2. Build a Snowman (or Snow Sculptures)

When snowflakes start falling, there’s no better way to embrace the season than by heading outside to build a snowman or get creative with snow sculptures.

Gather your family, friends, or even neighbors for an impromptu snowman-building contest, or challenge each other to create imaginative designs like snow animals, castles, or abstract art.

You can find some fun ideas on my Winter Pinterest Board.

Build a Snowman

Building a snowman is more than just rolling snow into big balls—it’s a chance to let your imagination run wild, experimenting with different snow textures, props for eyes, noses, and scarves, and even adding personality to your frosty creations.

If you’re in a place that doesn’t often get snow, it’s a nostalgic way to make the most of the winter weather.

3. Sledding

Sledding is one of those classic winter activities that never loses its charm, no matter how old you get.

The thrill of speeding down a snowy hill with the cold wind in your face and a sense of freedom in your chest is something that stays with you.

Whether you’re using a traditional sled, a plastic toboggan, or even an old-fashioned wooden sled, there’s nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of the descent.

Vintage Sled, Vintage Blankets, Buffalo Plaid, Cabin

And it’s not just about the ride itself; sledding is also about the laughter, the occasional tumble, and the pure joy of being outdoors in the winter.

Find a hill with a nice, gentle slope for the kids or go for a more daring incline if you’re after a more adventurous experience.

It’s a simple activity that’s easy to do with family or friends, and the best part is that the fun never seems to end—you’ll be racing up the hill just to go down again and again!

4. Hot Cocoa Bar

After a day spent braving the cold, there’s nothing better than warming up with a cup of hot cocoa.

But why settle for a plain mug of cocoa when you can set up an entire hot chocolate bar at home?

Create your own winter wonderland of toppings and mix-ins, like whipped cream, colorful marshmallows, crushed peppermint, chocolate shavings, or even a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg.

Hot Chocolate Bar, Log Cabin, Cabin

For a more indulgent experience, add caramel sauce, toffee bits, or mini candy canes for extra flavor.

Set up the bar with various types of hot chocolate—think dark chocolate, white chocolate, or spiced cocoa—for everyone to customize their drink just the way they like it.

It’s the perfect way to spend a cozy evening indoors with loved ones, sipping on sweet treats while you watch a holiday movie, read a book, or just chat by the fire.

This activity is also great for entertaining guests, making it a festive and interactive way to warm up during the colder months.

5. Winter Hiking or Snowshoeing

Winter hiking or snowshoeing offers a peaceful and serene way to explore nature during the colder months.

While many people think of hiking as a spring or summer activity, winter transforms the outdoors into a breathtaking landscape of quiet beauty.

If you’ve never tried snowshoeing before, it’s an easy-to-learn activity that allows you to walk on snow-covered trails without sinking into the powder, making it ideal for areas with deep snow.

Snowshoes

For those who prefer a more traditional hike, many trails are still accessible in winter, providing a crisp, calm atmosphere and fewer crowds.

Winter hiking offers a chance to spot wildlife in its natural habitat, experience the quiet stillness of a snowy forest, and enjoy the beauty of frost-covered trees or frozen lakes.

Plus, the cold air can be invigorating, making you feel like you’re truly connected to the outdoors.

Layer up, grab your boots or snowshoes, and discover the winter wonderland that’s waiting just outside your door.

6. Take a Winter Photography Walk

Winter landscapes are stunning and can offer beautiful photo opportunities. Bundle up, take your camera or phone, explore your surroundings while documenting the beauty of the season.

Try making it a challenge with family or friends inviting them to join in and share their favorite winter moments.

Winter Photography

You can create daily or weekly prompts, such as “Best Snowy Landscape,” “Coziest Winter Setup,” or “Funniest Winter Moment.”

Have everyone share their pics online or in a group chat.

7. Bake Treats

Winter is the ultimate time to indulge in baking, whether you’re a seasoned pro in the kitchen or just getting started.

The chilly weather and cozy atmosphere of your kitchen make it the perfect setting for whipping up some sweet or savory treats.

Gingerbread cookies, spiced cakes, and hearty pies are staples, but you can also experiment with new recipes, like hot cocoa brownies or cinnamon rolls.

The aroma of freshly baked goods filling the house is enough to make anyone feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Pretzel Sea Salt Cookies

Baking is not only a comforting solo activity, but it’s also a wonderful way to spend time with family or friends.

Share your delicious creations with neighbors, or deliver a festive batch of cookies to loved ones as a thoughtful gift. Stop in White Arrows the Shop to find the perfect plate for gifting on from our Dish Bar.

If you prefer, you can keep your treats all to yourself to savor throughout the season—just be sure to have a cup of hot cocoa or coffee on hand to enjoy with them!

8. Go Skiing or Snowboarding

Downhill skiing is one of my favorite activities!

If you live near a ski resort—or if you’re planning a winter getaway—skiing or snowboarding is one of the most thrilling ways to experience the winter season.

Whether you’re a seasoned expert carving down the slopes or a beginner eager to learn, these high-energy sports offer an incredible way to make the most of the winter months.

Skiing and snowboarding aren’t just about the sport itself—they’re also about the scenery.

Picture yourself gliding down a snow-covered mountain with panoramic views of snowcapped peaks and pristine forests.

Skiing in Montana

The adrenaline rush from speeding down the slopes is unmatched, and for those looking to try something new, ski resorts often offer lessons, making it easy for first-timers to get the hang of it.

Whether you’re into powdery runs or thrilling terrain parks, skiing and snowboarding are perfect for creating lasting memories on the mountain.

9. Have a Winter Picnic

Who says picnics are only for the summer?

With a little preparation, a winter picnic can be an unforgettable experience.

Bundle up in cozy layers, pack a thermos of hot soup, and head to a scenic park or even a snowy field for a winter wonderland picnic.

The crisp, cold air makes the experience feel special, and there’s something magical about sitting outdoors with snow gently falling around you.

Picnic with Skotch Kooler

Pack hearty foods that will warm you from the inside out, like stews, sandwiches, or hot baked goods, and don’t forget your favorite hot drinks—whether it’s a thermos of cocoa or mulled cider.

For extra comfort, bring along blankets or insulated cushions to sit on, and be sure to bring a thermos or two for something warm to sip while you relax.

A winter picnic is a peaceful way to embrace the cold, connect with nature, and enjoy a delicious meal with friends or family.

10. Create a Winter Wonderland Indoors

Even if the weather outside is frightful, you can still create a magical atmosphere inside your home.

Turn your living room into a cozy winter wonderland with twinkling fairy lights, paper snowflakes, and winter greenery like pine boughs.

Add some soft throws and pillows to create a warm, inviting space, perfect for curling up with a cup of tea or a good book.

You can also get creative with seasonal decorations like homemade wreaths or candles in wintery scents.

Winter Decor- Hot Chocolate

The key is to embrace the season’s beauty indoors by incorporating textures, colors, and lighting that evoke the magic of winter.

Whether you host friends for a gathering or simply enjoying the ambiance with your family, a cozy winter home can make the colder months feel extra special.

11. Host a Winter Craft Party

A winter craft party is a wonderful way to bring friends and family together during the colder months.

Get creative with activities that fit the season, like making DIY holiday cards, decorating ornaments, or crafting homemade snow globes.

You can even try your hand at knitting scarves or making felt snowflakes.

Whether you’re crafting holiday decor, creating personalized gifts, or just having fun with seasonal projects, it’s the perfect opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones while being productive.

winter-decor-apres-ski-buffalo-plaid

Make sure to set up a cozy space with plenty of supplies, a warm drink station, and some festive music to get everyone into the spirit.

Not only will you leave with a sense of accomplishment, but you’ll also have unique handmade items that will add a personal touch to your home or make thoughtful gifts.

12. Make Homemade Candles with Winter Scents

There’s something so comforting about lighting a candle on a cold winter night, and making your own adds a personal touch to your home decor.

Winter scents like cinnamon, pine, and vanilla evoke cozy memories and can help you transform your space into a relaxing haven.

Creating homemade candles is surprisingly easy and can be a fun, creative project for a solo afternoon or a group activity.

Nautical Candle Holders

Choose your favorite scent or blend a few to create your own signature fragrance.

You can even add dried herbs, spices, or glitter to make your candles extra special.

If you’re looking for a meaningful holiday gift, homemade candles are an excellent idea—they’re thoughtful, personalized, and always appreciated.

Whether you keep them for yourself or share them with loved ones, DIY candles are a beautiful way to bring warmth to your home.

13. Start a Winter Journal

Winter is the perfect time to slow down, reflect, and capture the essence of the season in a journal. Whether you’re a writer, an artist, or simply someone who enjoys documenting life’s moments, starting a winter journal can be a deeply rewarding experience.

Use the pages to jot down your winter adventures—whether you’re hiking through snowy trails, baking seasonal treats, or enjoying a peaceful evening by the fire.

You can also sketch winter scenes, write down cozy recipes, or capture thoughts and reflections on the season.

Great Day to Start Journaling

A winter journal is a great way to embrace the stillness of the colder months, and it provides a wonderful way to look back on your memories in years to come.

Plus, it’s a perfect way to channel creativity and stay mindful during this quieter time of year.

14. Winter Stargazing

On clear winter nights, the sky is often at its most breathtaking. Bundle up in your warmest clothes and head outside for some winter stargazing.

The crisp, cold air makes the stars appear sharper and brighter, and with the lack of light pollution in some areas, you may be able to spot constellations more easily.

This is the perfect time to observe the wonders of the night sky—whether it’s a meteor shower, the Big Dipper, or the Orion constellation.

Stargazing also gives you a sense of connection to the vastness of the universe and can be a meditative experience.

Night Cabin

Find a quiet, open space with minimal light interference, and spend time marveling at the celestial beauty above.

Winter stargazing is a peaceful, awe-inspiring activity that brings a sense of calm and wonder, perfect for unwinding after a long day.

15. Host a Game Night

When the weather keeps you indoors, a game night can bring everyone together for some fun and laughter.

You can enjoy trivia, charades, or even play classic board games like Monopoly or Scrabble.

Here’s a post with some of our favorite family games.

For a winter twist, you can create your own themed trivia questions, or set up a movie or song guessing game.

Kristin Lenz

Game nights are a great way to connect with loved ones, and they also helps lift your spirits during the colder months.

Make it extra festive by offering winter snacks and cozy drinks, and encourage everyone to wear their comfiest sweaters or even winter pajamas!

16. DIY Hot Toddy or Cocktail Tasting

Winter is the perfect time to experiment with new drinks, especially those that warm you up from the inside out.

Hot toddies, mulled wine, and seasonal cocktails are perfect for cozying up with friends or unwinding after a busy day.

Organize a DIY cocktail or hot toddy tasting with a few different recipes, and get creative by adding various spices, fruits, or herbs to experiment with flavors.

Buffalo Plaid, Hudson Bay Blanket, Pendleton, Baileys, Roaring Fire, Fireplace, Cozy

For example, try a cinnamon-spiced hot toddy or a cranberry-orange sangria. Set up a tasting station with all your ingredients and enjoy sampling your creations.

This is a great way to add a fun twist to your winter evenings, and if you’re looking for a thoughtful holiday gift, you can bottle your custom cocktails for friends to enjoy.

17. Create a Winter-Themed Scavenger Hunt

Winter-themed scavenger hunts are a fantastic way to get outside, explore your neighborhood, and engage in a little friendly competition.

Whether you’re hunting for pinecones, snowflakes, holiday decorations, or even specific animals like winter birds, a scavenger hunt adds an element of adventure to any winter outing.

If you live in an area with snow, you could even hide little treasures or clues beneath the snow for extra fun.

lake cabin in the snow

Create clues that lead participants from one item to the next, or turn it into a race for who can find everything first.

For an indoor option, you could hide small winter-themed objects like snow globes or holiday ornaments around the house.

This activity is not only entertaining but encourages participants to embrace the winter season by exploring the beauty around them.

18. Make a DIY Snow Globe

Craft your own personalized snow globes using jars, mini figurines like pine trees and snowmen, glitter, and glycerin.

snow globe

This is a great activity for kids or a fun craft night with friends.

19. Create a Winter Soundtrack Playlist

What’s a winter day without the right soundtrack?

Curate a winter playlist that suits your mood, whether it’s peaceful and cozy, upbeat and festive, or nostalgic with classic winter tunes.

Share it with others or use it as your soundtrack while you relax at home or play it during your activities and on winter outings.

20. Build an Ice Lantern

Create your own winter lanterns by filling balloons with water, freeze them outdoors, and then pop the balloon to reveal a beautiful, translucent ice lantern. Then add a candle inside. The result is a glowing, icy lantern perfect for lighting up your front yard or decorating your home with wintery beauty.

21. Plan a “Staycation” Winter Retreat

If you’re not traveling this winter, make your home a winter retreat.

Turn your living space into a cozy retreat with activities like an indoor spa day or a movie marathon.

Stone Fireplace

Enjoy hot drinks, and even take virtual tours of snowy destinations.

A “staycation” is the perfect excuse to relax and enjoy the comforts of home.

22. Make Winter-Themed Terrariums

Bring a little nature indoors by crafting winter-themed terrariums.

Fill a glass container with faux snow, miniature winter figurines, and tiny pinecones or branches.

It’s a low-maintenance decoration that adds a touch of winter magic to your home—and can be a great gift idea for someone special to lift their winter blues.

23. Go on a “Winter Beach” Adventure

If you live near a coast, consider taking a walk along the beach in winter. The landscape will look entirely different in the cold, with dramatic waves, sea foam, and maybe even a beach fire!

24. Try Winter Cooking Classes (or DIY)

Try making hearty stews, warming curries, or classic comfort foods like pot pie or fondue.

Winter is the perfect time to experiment with hearty, comforting meals.

Try out winter-inspired cooking, like slow-cooked stews, curries, or classic comfort foods like pot pie and fondue.

Consider joining an online cooking class or simply experiment with winter dishes from different cultures.

Host a cozy, home-cooked meal with friends or family.

It’s the perfect time to start a Cookbook Club, like a book club, but where you read and cook through cookbooks, meeting once a month to discuss and share a favorite recipe.

These activities will surely inspire your creativity and bring even more magic to the winter months!

If you’re like me, life often feels like a balancing act—between family, work, church, personal goals, and everything in between.

As women, we juggle multiple roles, and it can often be in the midst of chaos and fatigue.

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

People comment often about the amount of things they see me do. The truth is, I don’t get everything done I intend to do. Every day doesn’t go the way I plan with a checklist completed.

But through it all, I’ve discovered that my faith is the foundation that keeps me going, enabling me to do all that I do, and more importantly, to do it with grace, purpose, and peace.

Don’t Be Intimidated

One of the biggest deterrents toward moving forward toward dreams is comparing ourselves to others. When we spend more time watching what others are doing and let that intimidate us, distract us or make us feel less than, we will not live in God’s purpose for us.

We have gifts, talents and dreams that God gave us to use and do His work with. In Galatians 6:4 we are encouraged with these words. “But let each one examine his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor.”

So capturing those comparisons quickly is key. I also work on limiting the amount of time I spend on social media taking in other people’s content.

The Power of Faith in Every Area of Life

It’s easy to get caught up in the demands of everyday life and forget where our strength comes from. For me, faith in God is the fuel that propels me forward.

When I feel overwhelmed or unsure, I lean into my relationship with God. I turn to Scripture, prayer, and the quiet moments of reflection to recalibrate my heart and mind.

Tea Cup

In Philippians 4:13, we are reminded: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This verse has become my anchor. Whether it’s managing my schedule, taking care of my family, or stepping out of my comfort zone to pursue a new project, I know I’m never doing it alone. God is right beside me, guiding my steps.

Finding Purpose in the Daily Grind

One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned is that even the most mundane tasks can be infused with purpose when seen through the lens of faith.

As women, we often put others’ needs first—whether it’s caring for our children, supporting our husbands, or leading in our communities. Yet, sometimes we forget that these acts of service are not just “duties” but expressions of love and purpose.

Vintage Plaid Cookbooks

When I approach each task with the understanding that I’m serving God through my service to others, it transforms everything.

Whether I’m making dinner, folding laundry, or answering emails, I strive to do it with joy, as an offering to God. I remember Colossians 3:23, which says: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” This perspective shifts my mindset from seeing tasks as burdens to viewing them as opportunities to honor God and bless those around me.

Busy

One of the things people tend to say is that I am busy. I do not feel busy, my pace adjusts to the seasons of my life and is modified based on my having time for quiet, for family, for friends and my work. It is not busyness, it is filling my time with purpose and joy.

One of my friends often says we are all different sized boats and our capacity varies. It can change in different stages of life.

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens,” it says in Ecclesiastes 3:1.

Leaning into God’s Strength, Not My Own

I do have days when I feel like I’m running on empty. The demands are high, the expectations are great, and my energy feels like it’s gone. But that’s when I remind myself: I don’t have to do it all in my own strength.

Vintage Red Lantern

I’ve learned that when I lean into God’s strength, I am equipped to handle anything that comes my way. Isaiah 40:29 says, “He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.”

This promise reassures me that I don’t have to be superwoman, trying to do everything perfectly on my own. Instead, I can rely on God’s endless supply of strength, knowing He will give me what I need, when I need it.

And check out my post about how to not feel rushed.

Embracing Rest and Renewal

A vital part of doing all I do is remembering the importance of rest. As women, we often think we have to do it all and be everything to everyone. But the truth is, rest is not a luxury; it’s essential to our well-being and our ability to serve others. God Himself modeled rest, as we see in the creation story where He rested on the seventh day.

Cabin Bedroom Decor

I have learned the importance of creating space for rest in my schedule. Whether it’s a quiet morning with my Bible and a cup of coffee, or a weekend getaway with loved ones, these moments of renewal are essential for maintaining balance.

Matthew 11:28 invites us: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” I hold onto this promise, allowing myself grace to recharge and come back to my tasks with renewed energy and perspective.

Finding Community and Support

We were never meant to do life alone. One of the greatest blessings I’ve experienced is the support of a strong community of women. I have amazing friends and coworkers who I love doing life with. Whether it’s my days working alongside the girls at White Arrows Home, fellow moms, through Bible study, or just having honest conversations with close friends, these connections provide encouragement, accountability, and wisdom.

Proverbs 27:17 says, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” This verse reflects the power of community. We are meant to uplift one another, share our burdens, and celebrate our victories together.

Cabin Coffee Pot

I’ve learned that asking for help, leaning on others for prayer, and offering support in return are all ways we can strengthen each other in our walk of faith.

Trusting God’s Plan

Ultimately, how I do all I do comes down to trust. I trust that God has a plan for my life, a purpose for my days, and a reason for every season.

Sometimes, life doesn’t look how I imagined it would, but I have learned to trust that God is working all things together for my good. Romans 8:28 reassures us that, “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Cabin Living Room

This trust allows me to release the pressure of perfection, knowing that my worth isn’t based on what I accomplish but on who I am in Christ.

With each step, I trust that God is leading me toward the next chapter of His perfect plan.

Empowered by Faith, Guided by Purpose

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, tired, or unsure of how to keep going, I encourage you to pause and reconnect with the source of your strength. Allow your faith to be the anchor in the storm, the light in the darkness, and the grace in your days.

You are not alone in this journey. God is with you every step of the way, equipping you to do all things with strength, love, and purpose.

Remember, you are a beloved daughter of the King, and He has equipped you to fulfill your calling—right where you are.

Adventure Awaits Flannel

Keep trusting, keep serving, and keep walking in faith. You can do all things through Christ, who strengthens you.

In today’s fast-paced world, small lifestyle changes can have a big impact on both your health and the environment. Whether you’re looking to reduce your carbon footprint, eat more nutritious food, or simply make your home a healthier place to live, making a few simple swaps can help you achieve your goals.

Here are some easy changes to incorporate into your daily life that promote whole wellness.

Swap Refined Sugar for Local Honey or Maple Syrup

Refined sugars and artificial sweeteners are a common addition to many diets, but they’re not the healthiest option. Instead, consider using local honey or pure maple syrup as a natural sweetener. Local honey may even help with seasonal allergies and offers a dose of antioxidants. Maple syrup is full of minerals like manganese and zinc and is a wholesome, unprocessed alternative to sugar.

Say Goodbye to Plastic Bottles—Go Glass or Stainless Steel

Plastic bottles are not only bad for the environment but also potentially harmful to your health. Chemicals like BPA found in some plastics can leach into your water or food. To make a healthier choice, swap out single-use plastic bottles for glass or stainless steel alternatives. These materials are more sustainable, free from chemicals, and can be reused for years.

Staying Hydrated Lemon Water Decanter

Choose Whole Foods Over Processed Snacks

Processed foods are often loaded with sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats. For a healthier lifestyle, focus on eating whole foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and homemade snacks. You’ll not only feel better but also reduce your intake of preservatives and artificial ingredients found in many processed snacks.

Fruit basket

Swap Vegetable Oils for Olive Oil

Many people cook with highly refined vegetable oils, which can contain unhealthy trans fats and be stripped of nutrients. For a healthier cooking fat, olive oil is a better choice. It’s rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and antioxidants, making it a versatile, nutritious option for cooking and dressings.

Switch to Glass or Metal Storage Containers

Plastic storage containers may seem convenient, but they can leach harmful chemicals into your food and contribute to plastic waste. Instead, opt for glass or metal containers for storing food. They’re safer for your health, keep food fresh, and are more sustainable over time.

Natural Cleaning Products Over Harsh Chemicals

The cleaning products we use in our homes can contain harsh chemicals that harm both your health and the environment. By switching to natural cleaning solutions—like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils—you can keep your home sparkling clean without exposure to toxic substances.

Shop DoTerra HERE.

Cook More at Home, Eat Less Fast Food

Cooking at home offers a wide range of benefits: it’s healthier, more cost-effective, and helps you avoid preservatives and excess sugars and salts. Instead of grabbing fast food or takeout, try cooking meals from scratch with fresh ingredients. You’ll be in control of what goes into your food, and your body will thank you for it!

cookbooks, Pioneer Woman cookbooks, vintage cookbooks, cake stand, jadeite, jadeite cake stand, mother's day gift idea, mother's day

Go Plastic-Free with Utensils and Straws

One of the easiest ways to reduce plastic waste in your life is by swapping out plastic utensils and straws for more sustainable options like wooden, bamboo, or metal alternatives. These materials are durable, reusable, and free from chemicals that can leach into your food and drink.

Silverware

Opt for a Bamboo Toothbrush

Did you know that plastic toothbrushes can take hundreds of years to decompose? A simple swap to a bamboo toothbrush reduces your plastic waste and gives you a more sustainable way to maintain your oral hygiene. Bamboo is biodegradable and naturally antimicrobial, making it a healthy choice for both you and the planet.

Switch to Natural Deodorants

Conventional deodorants often contain synthetic chemicals and aluminum, which some studies suggest could be harmful to your health. By making the switch to natural deodorants made from ingredients like baking soda, arrowroot powder, and essential oils, you can avoid these chemicals while still staying fresh.

Grow Your Own Herbs and Vegetables

If you have a bit of space at home, consider starting a small garden. Growing your own herbs and vegetables not only ensures you have fresh, healthy produce on hand, but it also reduces your reliance on store-bought items that come wrapped in plastic. It’s a great way to promote sustainability and save money in the long run!

Garden Veggies

Choose Organic or Local Produce

Buying organic or locally grown produce supports sustainable farming practices and reduces your exposure to pesticides and chemicals. Plus, local produce is fresher, often tastes better, and helps reduce the carbon footprint associated with food transportation.

Blueberries and Beans

Drink More Water, Less Soda

We all know sugary drinks aren’t the best choice for our health. Instead of reaching for soda, opt for water or herbal teas to stay hydrated. Reducing your intake of sugary beverages can help prevent weight gain, improve skin health, and reduce your risk of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes.

Morning mineral water cocktail

Buy in Bulk to Reduce Packaging Waste

Buying in bulk is a great way to save money while reducing waste. Purchasing grains, legumes, nuts, and other staples in bulk reduces the need for single-use packaging. Simply bring your own reusable bags or containers to stores that allow bulk buying.

Switch to Compostable Trash Bags

Most trash bags are made from plastic, which can take centuries to break down. Consider using compostable bags made from plant-based materials instead. They break down much faster and are a more environmentally-friendly option.

Use a Water Filter

Instead of relying on bottled water, invest in a good-quality water filter for your home. Not only will you reduce plastic waste, but filtered water is often cleaner and healthier than tap water. It’s an easy and cost-effective way to ensure you’re drinking clean water.

Choose Eco-Friendly Personal Care Products

Traditional personal care products like shampoos, soaps, and lotions can contain harmful chemicals. Switch to natural, biodegradable personal care products that are gentle on both your body and the environment. Look for items with minimal packaging and ingredients you can pronounce!

Making simple swaps in your daily life can have a profound effect on your health, your wallet, and the planet. Start with a few changes and gradually incorporate more as you go. Whether it’s switching to natural cleaning products or opting for reusable alternatives, every small step counts toward living a more sustainable and healthier life.

Ready to make a change? Start with one or two swaps today and see how easy it can be to embrace a healthier, eco-friendly lifestyle!

Living in the Northwoods of Wisconsin has been a dream come true for me, and I love it year round.

But there’s something about the winter months that makes this Up North part of the world even more special.

Northwoods Winter, Great Pyrenees

The cozy excuse to hibernate indoors when the temperature drops and the snow starts to fall, brings a unique kind of joy in the long, snowy winters here.

Winter Decor

And the opportunities to experience nature outdoors during bundled up activities is truly exhilarating.

The cold might be a bit daunting at first, but the beauty, peace, and endless adventure it brings are absolutely worth it.

Here’s why I love living in the Northwoods of Wisconsin—even in winter.

1. The Magical Beauty of a Snow-Covered Wilderness

There’s a reason why people flock to the Northwoods in the winter months: it’s simply breathtaking.

When the first snow falls, everything transforms into a pristine winter wonderland.

The towering pines, birches, and maples are dusted with snow, creating a scene that feels like it’s straight out of a snow globe.

Winter in The Northwoods

Even in the deepest of winter, the landscape has an ethereal beauty that never gets old.

Whether I’m driving through winding forest roads or taking a walk around the lake, I’m always in awe of how the snow softens the world, muffling the sounds and creating a quiet, peaceful atmosphere.

The air is crisp and clean, and every tree branch or frozen bay has its own story to tell.

2. Winter Sports and Outdoor Adventures

Winter in the Northwoods is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts.

One of the best things about living here is the easy access to winter sports.

From cross-country skiing on local trails to snowshoeing through the forest, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the outdoors.

I love the thrill of speeding down the snow-covered tubing hill or ice skating on a frozen pond with friends and family.

Winter Hike

For those who enjoy more extreme winter sports, downhill skiing and snowboarding at nearby resorts are just an hour away.

No matter your skill level, there’s always an adventure waiting right outside your door.

And the best part? Because the area is so vast, it’s easy to escape the crowds and find solitude in nature, making it feel like I have the entire Northwoods to myself.

3. Cozy Nights by the Fire

There’s something about winter that makes staying inside feel like a luxury, and living in the Northwoods means cozy nights by the fire are a regular treat.

After a day spent outside, there’s no better feeling than curling up in front of a wood-burning stove with a cup of hot cocoa or coffee.

The crackling of the fire, the warm glow, and the soft blanket of snow outside create the perfect ambiance for unwinding.

Painted TV Tray

Whether I’m reading a book, catching up with my husband and kids, or simply enjoying the quiet, these moments of warmth and comfort are what I treasure most about winter here.

The sense of peace that comes from being snug indoors, with the cold world outside, is unparalleled.

4. Small Town Life

One of the things I love most about living in the Northwoods is the tight-knit community that comes together in all seasons, but especially in winter.

The cold weather doesn’t drive people indoors—it brings them closer.

My friends love to gather for snowshoe walks or simple get togethers at a local coffee shop.

coffee, coffee shop, breakfast, manitowish waters

Living here means embracing the season together. It’s about supporting local businesses, like cozy cafes and unique shops, and coming together for activities that bring a smile to your face.

And as the owner of one of those small businesses, I appreciate so much those who stop in to shop or order online.

The winter months may be long, but they are never lonely, thanks to the warmth of the people who call this place home.

5. Peace and Quiet

While some may see winter as a time to retreat indoors, I’ve found that it’s actually the perfect season to embrace the quiet beauty of the Northwoods.

The absence of the usual hustle and bustle allows me to slow down and appreciate the stillness that surrounds me.

On a snowy afternoon, when the world feels completely untouched, I love taking our dogs for a walk down our forest lined road, listening to the crunch of snow underfoot, and enjoying the serenity that comes with the season.

Shed decor decorated for winter

It’s a peaceful retreat from the noise of everyday life, where I can reflect, relax, and find a deeper sense of connection to both nature and myself.

There’s no rush in the Northwoods during winter; instead, there’s an invitation to simply be present and enjoy the moment.

6. Wildlife and Winter’s Natural Wonders

The Northwoods in winter is alive with wildlife, and one of the joys of living here is observing how animals adapt to the season.

I’ve spotted deer tracking through the snow, red foxes with their thick winter coats, and even the occasional snow owl perched silently on a branch.

The lakes, too, have their own wonders during the colder months.

snowmobiling

Frozen over and blanketed with snow, they offer the perfect backdrop for ice fishing.

Even in the winter, the Northwoods are teeming with life.

It’s a unique experience to witness nature in its winter form, as the animals go about their business and the landscape changes with each snowstorm.

7. A Perfect Balance of Adventure and Relaxation

What I love most about living in the Northwoods in winter is that the season offers the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation.

On one hand, I can immerse myself in outdoor activities like skiing, snowmobiling, and hiking through snow-covered forests.

On the other hand, the quiet beauty of the area allows for plenty of downtime—whether it’s reading a book by the fire or enjoying a long winter nap with the windows cracked open to listen to the quiet snowfall outside.

Stone Fireplace

It’s a place where I can feel both energized and relaxed, depending on the day’s mood.

8. The Winter Sky

There’s something truly magical about the Northwoods winter sky.

On clear nights, the stars seem impossibly bright and close, filling the sky with a dazzling array of constellations.

Winter nights in this part of the world are often so crisp and clear that you can see the Milky Way stretching across the sky, or catch a glimpse of a shooting star.

Whether I’m gazing up from just out front in my driveway or out by the lakeside, the winter sky always reminds me how small and how infinite our world really is. There are even opportunities to see the Northern Lights.

It’s a humbling experience that leaves me feeling grateful for the beauty around me.

9. A Fashion Adventure

One of the best parts of winter is the chance to play with my wardrobe and get creative with cozy, stylish layers that turn the cold weather into a fashion adventure.

Winter clothing is all about embracing the season with vibrant colors, textures, and fun accessories that make staying warm a stylish affair.

Think oversized knit sweaters, colorful hats with pom-poms, and soft, fluffy scarves that add personality to your look while keeping you snug.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about layering up with thermal leggings, wool socks, and chunky boots, knowing you’re not only prepared for the cold but also looking good while doing it.

Plus, winter offers endless opportunities to mix and match, from pairing cozy mittens with plaid scarves to rocking a statement coat that brings a little extra cheer to those gray winter days.

Embracing winter clothing isn’t just about functionality—it’s about adding a sense of joy and playfulness to the season, making the chilly months feel just a little bit brighter.

Embracing Winter in the Northwoods

Winter in the Northwoods of Wisconsin is more than just a season—it’s a way of life.

From the serene beauty of snow-covered forests to the active, community-focused events that bring us together, living here means embracing winter in all its forms.

It’s a time for outdoor adventures, cozy moments indoors, and quiet reflection.

Winter Porch Decor

The cold might be intense, but the warmth of nature, community, and the people I love makes it all worth it.

For me, the Northwoods is a place where winter isn’t something to endure; it’s something to celebrate.

And as each snowflake falls, I’m reminded why I’m so grateful to call this magical place home.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel like we’re constantly running from one task to the next, with no time to catch our breath. Like you are running out of gas and need a fill up.

As Christian women, we often juggle multiple roles—caring for our families, working, serving in our communities, and striving to grow in our faith.

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

The busyness of life can sometimes leave us feeling like we’re running on empty.

Tea Cup Quote

Living in a constant state of hurry is not how God intended us to live.

There’s a better way to approach busy days, one that allows us to feel more grounded, in control, and, yes—unrushed.

In Scripture, we are reminded to “be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10), which calls us to moments of calm and reflection in the midst of our busy lives.

Tea Cup

With a little intentional planning and a few mindset shifts, you can navigate even the busiest days with calm and clarity.

Here are some strategies to help you slow down, center your heart on God, and approach each day with peace instead of rush embracing a more thoughtful, relaxed pace.

Begin with a Slow Morning Routine Including Stillness and Prayer

The way you start your day sets the tone for everything that follows. Rather than jumping out of bed and immediately diving into your to-do list, carve out time in the morning to center yourself. Spend the first moments of your morning in stillness before God.

Start with a prayer of gratitude, thanking Him for the gift of a new day, and ask for His guidance and peace as you go about your tasks. A quiet time of devotion or Scripture reading can also help focus your mind on His Word and remind you of His sovereignty over every aspect of your day.

Antique desk and leather chair

Starting your morning with God allows you to approach your tasks with a sense of purpose and calm, rather than rushing into the day’s demands.

There’s more to how I spend my mornings in THIS POST.

Prioritize What Truly Matters

It’s easy to get overwhelmed when we try to do everything at once, feeling pressure to “do it all”—but not everything is meant to be a priority. Instead, take a few moments at the start of the day to identify the most important tasks—those that will move you closer to your goals or are crucial for your well-being. Prayerfully consider how to best steward those responsibilities.

Purple Trail Planners

By prioritizing what truly matters and aligning your actions with God’s purpose, you can better focus on your top tasks each day. This helps eliminate the overwhelm of trying to be everything to everyone and frees you from the rush of a never-ending to-do list.

By narrowing your focus, you can give yourself the space to complete each task more thoughtfully and with less pressure.

Time Block Your Day

Time blocking is a powerful strategy that helps you structure your day in a way that prevents over-scheduling and burnout. Set aside specific chunks of time for specific tasks and try to stick to these time blocks as much as possible.

During these time blocks, eliminate distractions and give your full attention to what’s in front of you. By dedicating yourself fully to one activity at a time, rather than constantly jumping between tasks, you create a sense of flow and control without feeling scattered.

Purple Trail Planners

Time blocking helps you move through your day with intention and purpose, creating a sense of rhythm and flow that minimizes stress. You’ll also have fewer distractions, making it easier to get into deep work or enjoy moments of rest without feeling rushed.

Build in Buffer Time

One of the biggest causes of feeling rushed is running from one task to the next with no breathing room in between. To avoid this, build in buffer time between appointments or tasks. Whether it’s a few extra minutes between meetings, time to grab a snack, or just a moment to breathe and reset, buffer time ensures you don’t feel constantly behind. You can also use this time to address any unexpected delays, making the day feel less chaotic and more manageable.

Practice Saying No

We often feel rushed because we take on too many commitments. One of the most freeing things you can do is learn to say no to things that don’t align with your priorities or will overwhelm your schedule.

Jesus showed us the importance of setting boundaries—whether it was withdrawing to pray or taking time to rest. In the same way, setting boundaries in your own life allows you to create space for rest and reflection.

Learning to say “no” with grace is key to reducing the rush in your life. Saying no doesn’t make you selfish; it allows you to protect your time and energy for the things that truly matter. Whether it’s declining an invitation, saying no to extra work, or simply choosing to take a break when you need it, setting boundaries will help you feel more in control.

Be intentional about what you say yes to, ensuring that it aligns with your values and responsibilities. When you respect your own boundaries, you can serve others with a more joyful and unrushed heart.

Embrace the Power of “Single-Tasking”

Multitasking may seem efficient, but it often leads to rushed, sloppy work. To avoid feeling overwhelmed and scattered, try embracing single-tasking.

Focus on one task at a time, giving it your full attention and effort. Not only will you do your best work, but you’ll also feel a greater sense of accomplishment as you finish each task before moving on to the next.

When you single-task, there’s no rush because you know you’re fully invested in what you’re doing in the moment.

Delegate and Share the Load

Even as women who are called to serve and care for others, it’s important to recognize that we don’t have to do everything ourselves.

God has placed people around you who can help, whether it’s a spouse, a friend, or a fellow church member. Don’t hesitate to delegate tasks or ask for support when you need it.

Desk, Notepad, Handwriting

By sharing the load, you free yourself to focus on what only you can do, all while building stronger relationships and encouraging others to serve.

Embrace the Power of Rest and Sabbath

God commanded us to rest, knowing that we need time to recharge and reconnect with Him. Rest is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. Whether it’s setting aside one day each week for a true Sabbath or taking short breaks throughout your day, make rest a priority.

This could mean turning off your phone for a while, taking a walk outside, or spending time reading the Bible. When you regularly embrace rest, you refresh both your body and soul, so you can approach your work with renewed energy and peace.

Take Strategic Breaks

Taking regular breaks is crucial for maintaining energy and focus throughout a busy day. Schedule short, intentional breaks—whether it’s a quick walk outside, a few minutes of stretching, or simply stepping away from your desk for a moment of quiet.

Bernese Mountain Dog and Great Pyrenees

Breaks prevent burnout and help you recharge so you can approach your tasks with more clarity and less urgency. By making rest a priority, you’ll feel more grounded and less rushed as the day progresses.

Simplify Your Environment

A cluttered space can make you feel mentally rushed and distracted. Take a few minutes each day to tidy up your workspace, home, or even your digital environment.

Decluttering allows you to create a sense of calm and focus, making it easier to concentrate on the task at hand without being overwhelmed by the mess around you.

A simplified environment contributes to a clearer mindset and helps you feel more in control and less hurried throughout the day.

Practice Mindful Transitions

Instead of rushing from one task to the next, take a moment to pause, pray and reset between activities. Mindful transitions—could be a brief prayer before jumping into a meeting, taking a deep breath before responding to a situation with your kids, or simply thanking God for His presence as you switch tasks or simply taking a moment to stretch after a long work session—can help you shift your focus and approach each task with more intention.

Take a look out the window, grab a moment of peace and refocus.

These mindful transitions help you refocus, calm your mind, and remind yourself that you’re not operating in your own strength but relying on God’s wisdom and peace. The short breaks give you the mental space you need to stay present and avoid the rush that often comes from moving through the day on autopilot.

Trust God’s Timing and Let Go of Perfection

Lastly, remember that God is in control of your day, and His timing is perfect. It’s easy to feel rushed when we try to control every detail or strive for perfection in everything we do.

Adventure Awaits Flannel

But we can rest in the knowledge that God’s plans for us are always good, and He is working even when we can’t see it. Trusting in His timing and letting go of unrealistic expectations allows us to approach each task with a spirit of grace, freeing us from the burden of rushing.

Move Through Your Day with Calm and Intention

Getting unrushed in a busy day isn’t about doing less—it’s about being more intentional with how you spend your time and energy. By slowing down your mornings, prioritizing what matters, and building in moments of rest and reflection, you can navigate even the busiest days with a sense of ease and clarity. The key is to be intentional about how you structure your time and to embrace the idea that there’s no rush. By adopting these nine strategies, you’ll find that a calm, unrushed day is not only possible—it’s within your control.

In 2013, we made the exciting decision to move to Camp Paradise, our lake house, full time. We became the second owners of a charming full log cabin located in the serene Northwoods of Wisconsin. The original owners had designed and built it as a vacation retreat, and we were thrilled to continue its legacy.

Log Cabin

In the early years while vacationing at Camp Paradise, our five kids would all pile into the bunk room to sleep. Those were some of the most precious moments—full of laughter, stories, and memories. I still fondly recall sitting in the rocking chair in the corner, reading to them long into the night as they snuggled into their cozy, camp-striped blankets before drifting off to sleep.

When we moved North permanently, our kids were also growing up and wanting more space to themselves, so the two older kids moved to the two available rooms upstairs.

You can read more about our decision to move in this post.

The kids were spreading out into the house and more guests were starting to come and visit.

There’s an often said phrase around our area, that you will never know how many friends you have until you own a lake home. We loved having friends and family come visit and were always extra excited when grandparents would start coming for longer stays as they retired.

We started dreaming about having a designated space for guests as well as more room for our kids as they grew.

As often happens with Brian and me, a little spark of an idea becomes fun to plan. Each week we have a weekly date night and our conversations turn to dreams. Our guest room idea blossomed into a full guest house.

See how we keep date night possible and a priority in this post.

Why Build a Guest House?

We envisioned a guest house that would offer:

  • Privacy for Guests: A place where guests could enjoy their own space while still being close enough to the main cabin to share meals and activities.
  • Extra Room for Gatherings: We wanted to have an extra space that would provide a gathering area near the guest rooms.
  • Aesthetic Harmony: We wanted the guest house to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings and the main cabin’s rustic aesthetic, so it would feel like a true extension of our home.

We also made a list of all the things we wished our main house had space for:

  • extra garage space as our kids all started driving
  • workout room
  • designated guest room that can stay clean and ready
  • extra bedrooms for older kids

Then I started sketching, searching the Internet and Pinterest for ideas inside and out.

Step 1: Planning and Design

The first step in building our guest house was determining the size, layout, and functionality of the space. We wanted something cozy yet functional, and ideally, it would not only serve as a place for sleeping and the sitting area, but also laundry rooms and bathrooms. We also officially added more garage space and a workout room on the dream list.

Here’s how we approached the design:

  • Size and Layout: We decided on a two story cabin with living space above and garages below, a style that would fit within the existing footprint of our property. There would be a simple wet bar, a comfy living area, two full bathroom rooms upstairs, and cozy bedrooms seemed like the perfect balance.
  • Material Choices: To maintain the rustic charm of the main cabin, we chose half log siding (even though our main house is full log) and natural stone accents for the exterior. So the look is the same. Lots of windows to let in natural light offer beautiful views of the surrounding nature. We included three dormers to coordinate with the two on the main cabin.

I took my sketch to a local designer and had them draw out the floor plan.

Step 2: Building the Guest House

Once we had a clear vision and design, it was time to begin construction. We hired a contractor, but we were still very hands-on with the process.

  • Foundation and Framing: The foundation was the first step, and because we’re located in an area with cold winters, we went with a slab foundation that would keep the building insulated and secure. Once that was in place, the framing went up quickly.
  • Interior Work: Inside, we kept things simple and added the cozy with our decor and rustic cabinetry for the wet bar and bathrooms. I knew I wanted plaid carpet going up the stairs and in the main living area.

Step 3: Furnishing the Guest House

Once the structure was built, it was time to make it feel like home. We wanted the guest house to feel both stylish and comfortable, with all the little touches that make a space inviting. Here’s what we did:

  • Rustic Furniture: We went for a blend of vintage and rustic pieces—think wooden bed frames, a reclaimed wood table for puzzles and games, and plush, soft seating that would keep guests relaxed and comfortable.
  • Cozy Bedding and Textiles: Soft bedding with down comforters, wool throws, and plenty of pillows made the bedrooms feel like a cozy retreat. We want guests to feel like they are staying in a special place, with plenty of blankets to snuggle under.
  • Decor: The decor incorporates vintage elements like old paddles and snow shoes, natural elements like a wood backsplash, artwork, and lamps to add a warm light in the mornings and evenings. We also include little touches like fresh flowers or potted plants to bring the outdoors in when people come to stay.

Step 4: Making It Functional for Guests

While aesthetics were important, we also wanted to ensure the guest house was fully functional. Here are some features we incorporated:

  • Wet Bar: We included a small wet bar with a mini fridge, sink, and microwave so guests could feel self-sufficient, but would still come to the main house for meals. A kuerig and self serve coffee station is on the bar to enjoy morning coffee or cozy drinks anytime.
  • Bathrooms: The guest house has a two full bathrooms, one with a walk-in shower, and one with a shower tub that blend comfort with style.
  • Wi-Fi and Technology: We ensured that there was reliable Wi-Fi throughout the guest house as well as a television in the sitting area.

Step 5: The Finishing Touches

Finally, it was time for the finishing touches. From hanging artwork to installing lighting, we took extra care to make sure the space felt welcoming and lived-in. We filled the shelves with books, puzzles and games for guests to enjoy.

Create a Gallery Wall From a Thrift Store Book

For the lower level, we split the garages into a double garage and a single divided by a little porch and entry way to the upstairs.

The single garage we fit out for our workout room. Our family loves to workout together and its one of the most used spaces.

Adding a glass garage door on the workout room was one of the best decisions as it not only lets in a lot of natural light, but gives extra energy to workouts being able to see out. On great weather days we open the door up and use the inside space and the driveway.

Home Gym Workout Room Spin Bike

We also plumbed this space for a possible future kitchen in case we ever need a wheelchair accessible living area in the future. We would be able to make this workout space living space.

Step 6: Welcoming Our First Guests

After months of hard work, we were thrilled to finally welcome our first guests to the space. It was everything we had dreamed of—cozy, functional, and a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern convenience. Our friends and family loved it, and it’s quickly become a favorite getaway spot.

Tips for Building Your Own Guest House

If you’re considering building your own guest house or cabin retreat, here are a few tips based on our experience:

  • Plan for Functionality: Think about the flow of the space and what your guests will need. Will they need a full kitchen, or just a small kitchenette? Will they come for a weekend stay or an extended vacation?
  • Sustainability is Key: Consider using eco-friendly materials and renewable energy sources to make your guest house more sustainable.
  • Stay True to Your Style: Whether you’re going for rustic, modern, or minimalist, make sure the guest house reflects your personal style and complements the main house and surrounding nature.
  • Budget for Unexpected Costs: Construction always comes with surprises, so be sure to leave some room in your budget for unexpected expenses.
Guest House

Final Thoughts

Building a guest house at our cabin has been one of the most rewarding projects we’ve undertaken. It’s not only provided us with more space to host family and friends, but it’s also given us a tranquil retreat that blends perfectly with the surrounding nature. Whether you’re dreaming of a cozy getaway or simply want more space for guests, a guest house is a fantastic addition that can transform your home.

We know many more memories are ahead for this beautiful space.

The New Year is the perfect time to embrace fresh starts and embark on exciting new challenges.

Great Day to Start Journaling

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

One day in my shop some friends stopped by and in our conversation they shared about the fun they have with New Year’s Resolutions. They choose something that may seem silly, but is a fun, creative thing to learn. Something that is a challenge, but doable. Something like a party trick or unique specialty not many people can do. I was so impressed and inspired!

So if you’re tired of the same old resolutions and want something more fun, unique, and rewarding, why not learn a new creative skill this year?

Whether it’s something you’ve always wanted to try or an entirely unexpected passion, mastering a new skill can bring a sense of accomplishment and joy.

Here are some inspiring and creative skill ideas that will ignite your curiosity, spark your creativity, and maybe even impress your friends too!

Master the Rubik’s Cube

The iconic Rubik’s Cube—a puzzle that has fascinated people for decades. While it might seem intimidating at first, solving a Rubik’s Cube is all about understanding algorithms and patterns. This is a skill that challenges your memory, spatial reasoning, and problem-solving abilities, but with practice, you can master it in no time.

  • Why Learn It? It’s a fun mental challenge that keeps your brain sharp. Plus, solving a Rubik’s Cube is a great conversation starter!
  • How to Start: Begin with tutorials on YouTube or apps that teach the beginner’s method (Layer by Layer approach). There are also many books that break down the steps for you.
  • Tip: Set a goal for yourself to solve the cube in a specific time frame, and track your progress. Soon, you’ll be able to show off your skills!

Become a Barista & Learn Coffee Art

For many, coffee is a daily ritual. Why not take your love of coffee to the next level by learning how to make barista-quality drinks at home? And once you’ve mastered brewing, why not experiment with coffee art? Latte art is a creative and impressive skill that involves creating intricate designs like hearts, rosettas, and tulips in the foam of a latte or cappuccino.

  • Why Learn It? Not only will you be able to impress your friends and family, but you’ll also save money by making fancy coffee drinks at home. And it’s a relaxing and creative way to start your day.
  • How to Start: Invest in a good espresso machine (or start with a moka pot or French press for beginners), learn how to make the perfect espresso, and then practice your latte art with steamed milk.
  • Tip: Watch tutorials on YouTube for beginners, and practice the basic shapes before moving on to more complex designs.

Learn to Do a Handstand

Learning to do a handstand is a great physical challenge that improves strength, balance, and coordination. Plus, it’s an amazing party trick to show off when you’re feeling confident! Handstands also offer a variety of benefits, including building core and upper body strength, improving your posture, and boosting your confidence.

  • Why Learn It? A handstand is not only a fun physical feat, but it’s also great for building overall fitness. Plus, you’ll feel amazing when you finally get it!
  • How to Start: Begin with wall-supported handstands to build confidence and strength. Practice engaging your core and finding your balance. Over time, try to work toward free-standing handstands.
  • Tip: Break down the skill into smaller steps—start by strengthening your wrists, shoulders, and core. Use yoga or gymnastics tutorials to guide you through the process.

Learn Calligraphy or Hand Lettering

Calligraphy and hand lettering are beautiful, creative skills that anyone can learn, and they can be incredibly rewarding. Whether you want to create handwritten notes, personalized gifts, or just improve your handwriting, calligraphy adds a touch of elegance to anything you write.

  • Why Learn It? Calligraphy is both calming and artistic. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to add a personal touch to your greeting cards, invitations, or artwork.
  • How to Start: All you need to get started is a calligraphy pen or brush, some paper, and practice sheets. You can also find online tutorials or courses that teach different calligraphy styles (like modern calligraphy, pointed pen, or brush lettering).
  • Tip: Practice your strokes regularly. Like any new skill, it takes time, but consistency is key to mastering the art of beautiful lettering.

Learn the Ukulele (or Another Instrument)

The ukulele is one of the easiest and most fun instruments to pick up. It’s small, affordable, and the basics are relatively easy to learn. Whether you’ve always wanted to play music or you just want to try something new, the ukulele is a great starting point. Plus, it’s easy to travel with!

  • Why Learn It? Playing an instrument is a fantastic way to express yourself creatively and relax. The ukulele is especially fun because it’s lighthearted and versatile, and you can play a variety of songs—from folk to pop.
  • How to Start: Begin by learning a few basic chords (C, G, F, and Am are great starting points) and then practice switching between them. Look for simple songs and tutorials online.
  • Tip: Try learning songs you love, and don’t stress about being perfect—enjoy the process of learning and making music.

Try Your Hand at Photography or Videography

Photography is not just about taking pictures; it’s about capturing moments, telling stories, and seeing the world in a different way. Whether you’re interested in landscapes, portraits, or street photography, learning the basics of photography can open up a world of creativity. If you’re also interested in video, learning videography and editing is an incredible way to tell stories and preserve memories.

  • Why Learn It? Photography lets you see the world through a new lens (literally!). It can be a rewarding hobby, and with digital cameras and smartphones, it’s easier than ever to get started.
  • How to Start: Start by learning about basic camera settings—ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. Practice taking photos in different lighting conditions and experiment with composition.
  • Tip: Join a photography group or online community for feedback, and don’t be afraid to take a ton of photos. The more you practice, the better you’ll get.

Learn to Juggle

Juggling is not only a fun party trick, but it’s also a great way to improve your hand-eye coordination and focus. Once you learn the basics of juggling, you can work your way up to more complex tricks, and it’s a fantastic way to impress your friends or family.

  • Why Learn It? Juggling is a great way to challenge your mind and develop physical dexterity. It’s also a great activity for relieving stress and improving your concentration.
  • How to Start: Start with three balls or beanbags. Focus on learning to throw one ball and catch it consistently before adding another. With practice, you’ll gradually build your skill.
  • Tip: Be patient—juggling can be tricky at first, but it’s a fun and rewarding skill once you get the hang of it.

Try Origami or Paper Sculpting

Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding, and it’s a fun, relaxing, and creative way to work with your hands. From simple cranes to intricate flowers and animals, the possibilities with paper are endless. This craft requires patience and precision, but the results can be stunning.

  • Why Learn It? Origami is a creative, hands-on activity that can be both calming and meditative. It’s also a great way to make beautiful, handmade decorations or gifts.
  • How to Start: All you need is paper and a set of instructions. Start with simple projects like the classic paper crane or a flower, and gradually work your way up to more complex designs.
  • Tip: Watch online tutorials and follow along. As you master each new design, your skills will improve and your collection of paper sculptures will grow!

The New Year is a time to challenge yourself and try something new, so why not make it a year filled with creative adventures?

It reminds you that you are never to old to learn something new and getting out of our comfort zones is so good for our brains and mindset.

So, pick one (or more!) of these creative skills, dive in, and embrace the fun of learning something new. Happy New Year—and happy learning!

As the New Year begins, many of us reflect on the past year and look forward to the opportunities, challenges, and growth that await us in the year ahead.

One of the most powerful practices I have incorporated into my faith journey the past few years is choosing a “Word of the Year”. You choose a word that speaks to your heart and helps guide you through the months ahead.

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

This practice is not simply about self-improvement for the sake of achievement, but about focusing on how you can grow in your relationship with God, align with His will, and live out your faith more deeply.

As Christian women, we are called to embrace God’s Word in every area of our lives, and choosing a word to reflect on can be a beautiful way to invite Him into our daily moments. Whether you want to deepen your faith, serve others, or find peace amid challenges, a Word of the Year can serve as a reminder of God’s promises and guide you toward a closer walk with Him.

In the past I have chosen words like Thrive, Here are some posts I wrote to encourage you on these themes:

Here are a few steps to help you choose your Word of the Year:

1. Pray for Guidance

Before choosing your word, take time to pray and seek God’s direction. Ask Him to reveal the word He wants you to focus on in the coming year. Trust that the Holy Spirit will guide you and bring clarity to your heart. Remember, this is not about what you think you need, but about what God wants to shape in you.

Scripture to Reflect On:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” — James 1:5

2. Consider What God is Teaching You

Think about the areas of your life where God has been speaking to you. Is there a particular theme or message that has been showing up in your prayers, your Bible study, or your everyday life? Maybe you’re being called to have more courage, to rest in His peace, or to grow in your faith.

Scripture to Reflect On:
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105

3. Seek Inspiration from Scripture

God’s Word is full of inspiration, and He will often highlight certain words that resonate with you in specific seasons of life. Spend some time in the Bible, meditating on verses that speak to your current circumstances or desires. You might find a word in Scripture that seems to leap off the page and feel like it’s meant for you.

Here are some words that may inspire you for the year ahead:

Faithful

Choosing “faithful” could remind you to stay steadfast in your walk with Christ, no matter the season. You can reflect on God’s faithfulness to you and seek to be faithful in your relationships, commitments, and daily life.

Scripture to Reflect On:
“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.” — Hebrews 10:23

Abide

“Abide” speaks to a deep, constant connection with Christ, staying close to Him in every circumstance. This word invites you to rest in His presence, trusting that He is with you through all things.

Scripture to Reflect On:
“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” — John 15:4

Courage

Sometimes, the year ahead may require bravery in facing challenges or stepping into new opportunities. Choosing “courage” could empower you to step out in faith, trusting God to equip you for whatever lies ahead.

Scripture to Reflect On:
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9

Joy

“Joy” is not dependent on circumstances but on God’s goodness and presence. Choosing this word can help you cultivate a spirit of gratitude and rejoice in all things, even in difficult moments.

Scripture to Reflect On:
“The joy of the Lord is your strength.” — Nehemiah 8:10

Peace

In a world that often feels chaotic, peace is a beautiful word to center your heart on. Allow God’s peace to rule in your heart, even amidst life’s uncertainties and challenges.

Scripture to Reflect On:
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” — John 14:27

Gratitude

Choosing “gratitude” helps focus your heart on thankfulness in every season of life. This word encourages you to see God’s blessings, both big and small, and to respond with a heart of thankfulness.

Scripture to Reflect On:
“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” — Psalm 107:1

Serve

“Serve” could be the word that calls you to put others first, whether it’s serving your family, church, or community. This word reminds us of Christ’s example of servant leadership and encourages you to live a life that reflects His love.

Scripture to Reflect On:
“The greatest among you will be your servant.” — Matthew 23:11

4. Apply Your Word to Your Daily Life

Once you’ve chosen your word, consider how you can intentionally apply it in your daily life. Write it down in your journal, hang it on your wall, or make it the theme of your Bible study or prayer time. Each month, reflect on how God has worked in your life in relation to that word, and make adjustments as needed.

Scripture to Reflect On:
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” — Colossians 3:23

5. Reflect on Your Word at the End of the Year

At the end of the year, take time to look back on how God has used this word to shape and grow you. How have you seen His faithfulness in your life? How has this word influenced your relationships, your work, and your spiritual growth?

6. Let Your Word Guide You Closer to God

Choosing a Word of the Year isn’t just a practice for self-improvement—it’s a way to invite God into every area of your life and to be intentional about living in alignment with His will. As a Christian woman, your Word of the Year can help keep you focused on His promises, guide your steps, and deepen your faith in powerful ways.
