Fitness

What are your favorite ways to get exercise?

Mine?

  • Going for a walk
  • Spinning on my stationary bike
  • Pilates
  • HIIT workouts with my husband

Walking is one of my favorite ways to get moving: it’s easy on my joints, not intimidating and can be done anywhere easily.

I love taking a walk alone, with a friend or with my family and dogs.

A Walk in Fall

My favorite workout is to get on my spin bike for 30-45, turn on one of my playlists and get lost in the rhythm and effort it brings.

We used to have a spin studio in town I would go to a few days a week and really got into how much this workout could do for me physically and mentally too to clear my head.

I find it fun, with my music going, it’s like a little dance party on pedals.

Home Gym Workout Room Spin Bike

Two mornings a week I go to the pilates studio and enjoy a session with my trainer and a few other gals.

It’s a beautiful studio with views of the woods and lake and each class is encouraging and fun with the small group.

Pilates

Many afternoons I do a HIIT Circuit Workout (High Intensity Cardio) with my husband.

We have a NordicTrak treadmill and through the screen on it we have built in classes and coaching through IFIT or a very small few each month. (Even if you don’t have the treadmill, you can get IFIT and use it anywhere streaming it on your mobile devices making it easy to do anywhere even when traveling.)

Every class we have taken on it, whether the couch to 5K one I did running on the treadmill, to the fitness classes you can participate in when you turn the screen, all have been FABULOUS.

This treadmill has been so worth the investment!

Home Gym Workout Room Treadmill

Yoga

In my ideal schedule, I do yoga on Friday mornings at our local yoga studio.

Friday’s class is a sculpt yoga, so along with a traditional yoga practice, some cardio and hand weights are included.

The balance, flexibility and centeredness that yoga helps me with are a definite bonus to my fitness routine and whole body wellness.

As a Christian, I spend time in prayer during the session, feeling gratitude for the blessings God has given me and focus on how he will be with me through all that will come my way in the day ahead.

I plan to add in more yoga sessions when my schedule allows.

The Yoga Shop

Stretching

Spending time stretching and doing some of the yoga flow I learn in class, fits easily into the beginnings and endings of my other workout sessions at home.

I also love to do about 10 minutes of stretching when I wake up in the morning to help my body wake up.

Home Workout Fitness Studio

Food

Diets + Meal Plans

What I eat and how I fuel my body affects my mindset and how my body performs during my workouts so it is a critical piece to my fitness.

Do you struggle to find the right eating plan?

You name it, I’ve probably tried it over the years, but I’ve come up with the best plan for sure.

Here are my secrets to healthy eating:

  • Eat whole, fresh foods, farm grown and raised.
  • Limit added sugars wherever possible.
  • Work on upping your protein intake. See if you can get close to 100grams a day or half your desired healthy weight goal.
  • The best eating plan is the one you can stick with. It doesn’t matter how great it is if you don’t follow it.
  • Stay accountable to yourself to be as healthy as possible, but drop the guilt. Try to enjoy the process and learning what’s best for you to feel great.

Basically though, it comes down to ONE question: Will this nourish me?

Supplements

There are a few supplements I take every day.

I buy my supplements at our local health food store.

Not being a nutritionist, I just spend time reading and learning, trying to find what is best for my body.

Seek out expert advice and counsel from professionals to find your exact deficiencies and recommendations for supplementation.

I start every day with this DoTerra MetaHeath routine.

Cold Plunge + Sauna

I first started learning about cold plunging when I read Own the Day, Own Your Life by Aubrey Marcus.

Purple Trail Planners

Living on a lake in the Northwoods of Wisconsin makes this a bit easier when the ice goes out in Spring.

Each Spring we go in the lake many days for a few minutes.

There are groups of ladies here locally that get together to cold plunge all year long.

Maybe there is a group in your area you could join.

We also have a new spa with a sauna/cold plunge and it is getting great compliments.

Photo from Unwind

I go there regularly for massages, but haven’t gone to cold plunge yet.

Check your area to see if there is place to go. They may sell punch cards so you can drop in on your schedule.

At home we have a sauna we use regularly.

The data out there about the benefits of the sauna are huge and encourage me to take time for sitting inside a few times a week. Here’s an article with some examples.

Many communities now have rentable saunas that will come park at your house, your fitness facility may have a sauna, or a local spa.

You can also add one to your home for many price points.

In my schedule I take a cold shower in the mornings after my morning workout.

Relaxing Spa Bathroom Shower

After my regular shower routine, I turn the dial all the way cold and stand under the ice cold water working at slowing my breathing down for one minute on the front of my body and then turn around and do one minute on the back.

For the sauna, I turn it on to heat up before I go over to our workout room a few afternoons a week, then sit inside for 30 minutes when my spin or circuit is over.

Breathing

This is an area I still need to dive into and that makes me excited.

I love learning new things, especially if they up my health in body and mind.

When I first heard about cold plunging, I also started to learn about specific breathing practices, like those of Wim Hof.

We can learn together! Join my Wellness Society HERE.

Home Workout Fitness Studio

Hydration

Another big piece of my whole body wellness and increased stamina during workouts is hydration.

Each day I try to get at least 64 ounces of water.

Staying Hydrated Lemon Water Decanter

A few ways that it becomes easier:

  • Keeping an infused decanter out where its visible and ready to pour.
  • Using my big 30 oz. Stanley. when I head out each morning (I know! I know! But it truly does help!)
  • Using a beautiful vintage goblet when I’m at home.

Each morning I add an LMNT packet to my water to help make sure I’m getting my electrolytes and sodium.

I would love to keep sharing ideas with you in the Wellness Society!

  • Join my 5 Day Wellness Challenge HERE where you will get five days of challenges and inspiration sent directly to your inbox FREE.
  • Join my Wellness Society HERE for a monthly subscription full of inspiration, encouragement and support.

A Home and Heart Refresh For Spring brings new energy and excitement into everyday living after a long Winter.

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

A big thank you to my friend Marty of A Stroll Thru Life for organizing this Spring Home Tour blog hop.

A full list of participants and links can be found at the bottom of this post.

If you are taking the tour in order, then you just came over from Peacock Ridge Farm, who finished up Monday’s tours.

Welcome to Camp Paradise, my lakeside log cabin home in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, where I am kicking off Tuesdays round of virtual home stops.

Welcome to Camp Paradise

In a few months trees and plants will begin budding in our area.

Usually we don’t get much of a Spring, just a quick mud season between Winter and Summer.

Summer Log Cabin

But this year we had a very weird Winter with no snow and warm temps, it has felt like a really long Spring.

We can get as much as 100 feet of snow in the Winter and our local tourism depends on it as recreational enthusiasts flood our area for snowmobiling, cross country skiing and ice fishing, but this year the trails couldn’t even open.

Winter Cabin

It’s been hard on the economy.

Typically, our Winters are long and cold and last from October into April and we truly have a need to feel refreshed in home and heart as Spring begins to break through.

Even without all the snow and freezing temps this year though I’m still craving these reviving practices.

Refreshing the Home

There’s lots to do this time of year to give our cabin home a refresh.

With the new buds and blooms outdoors also comes a rebidding of freshness and color inside.

So Fresh & So Clean

Going through the cabin and giving everything a deep clean feels amazing in Spring.

Opening up the windows and doors to let in the fresh air is invigorating.

I break the giant job of cleaning the entire cabin into doable chunks that don’t overwhelm, put in my earbuds, start my audiobook and get to work. See what I’m listening to HERE.

kitchen herbs in McCoy pot on vintage scale

Organize

As i go around and clean, I’m also decluttering, moving extra decor into crates to take down in my storage room.

Winter has more layers not only in clothing, but in our home with lots of throw blankets and seasonal decor.

It simplifies for Spring.

Sunroom table with vase of tulips

Color Bursts

After the bright lights and colors of Christmas, my Winter decor matches the view outside our windows and goes to more neutral palette of browns and whites.

The bursts of color then that begin popping out inside in March bring a refreshing joy throughout.

Adding florals and mosses is one of the quickest ways to boost the color levels.

Refreshing the Heart

With all that’s refreshing in our home, I’m also getting a reboot to my creativity and energy in myself.

Refresh Your Routines + Habits

This time of year is a great time to refresh routines and habits.

Morning sunlight makes it easier to wake up and get the day started strong from the get go.

Just like the beginning of the calendar year in January, Spring gives us another natural inclination toward trying again with habits like those of a productive morning.

Spring Decor birds and pottery

A New Journal

Each season I love getting a new journal with fresh, clean pages.

I love keeping journals for my daily to do lists, my morning pages writing and other idea dumps.

There’s something about a blank page that leads to an energizing, reboot and abounding possibilities.

Maybe a new project will evolve.

Maybe a new workout plan will forge forward.

Menu planning will include new clean recipes with lots of fresh ingredients.

Looking for a little encouragement? Join my 5 Day Wellness Challenge HERE.

Refresh Your Mindset

For some Winter can be hard on energy levels and mood.

Spring brings a refresh of our mindset with more sunny days and daylight.

Getting outside more can really bring a boost in positive thinking.

Thanks so much for visiting!

I hope your Spring is refreshing to not only your home, but your heart as well!

Weekly roundup of favorite things from White Arrows Home

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

  • Our trip to Denver. I shared about my favorite spots in my Welcome Home Saturday post yesterday.
  • I spent time with a friend I hadn’t seen since before Thanksgiving! It was so fun to catch up and feel spoiled with wine and a charcuterie board in her cozy home.
  • Wednesday night Brian and I dropped into church for the youth group student led night. Our daughter was helping lead worship and our son was helping with the introduction. I love these activities that give them the opportunity to speak and perform in front of crowds and develop this skill at a young age. Then we went out for date night at Northfork where I enjoyed my favorite blackened salmon salad.

I’m looking forward to planting gardens and finding encouragement and inspiration from what I’ve done in the past, books and other resources.

This year I’m even more excited for planting my gardens.

I don’t know if is that we haven’t had much of a Winter so I feel like Spring is that much closer or if is because I’m building off of what I’ve done in prior years and the anticipation of my new ideas.

Here’s a peek at what I’m working with and a few of the books and other resources that are giving me encouragement.

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

At Badger Hollow

Our getaway property down in The Driftless Area of Wisconsin, in the bluffs along the Mississippi River is where I do most of my gardening.

We call our property Badger Hollow.

Sunset in The Driftless

The boys do hunting, trapping and fly fishing.

It’s a spot where we all love hiking and being outside as much as possible exploring the woods or working on the land in our gardens and orchard.

The Potting Shed

I have a potting shed that needs some work and some interior styling.

Last spring I started working on it, but didn’t get to finish, so you’ll have some fun posts to look forward to as I continue the project this year.

We ended up doing a whole back porch tear down and rebuild so most all other to dos took a back seat.

Read my plans for the shed HERE.

One Room Challenge Week 2 Garden Shed

Cut Flowers

I added a few zinnia and other flowers into the gardens this past Summer just for cutting and enjoying in bouquets.

This year I plan to add to this greatly all around the property.

There are more blooms around the house in the landscaping like lilacs that make the whole house smell amazing in May and others that add to the beauty of the property.

Natural Swimming Pool
One Room Challenge Week 2 Garden Shed

And wild flowers grow all around on the prairie giving us lots to collect on walks.

Vegetable Garden

We plant a vegetable garden each year that provides produce to enjoy fresh all season.

I’m learning more all the time about how to preserve for the seasons in between.

Wisconsin Garden cucumbers, beans, peppers and zucchini

Canning is on the list this year.

We have berry bushes all around too, so making jams along with the baked goods and freezing we currently do will be a fun way to make the enjoyment last longer.

Blackberry Recipes

Pumpkin Patch

Our pumpkin patch was always a dream of mine, so when we bought the land I was so excited there was space for one.

Orchard

We have an orchard with several apple trees and pear trees.

This year I want to have an expert come out and help give us some tutorials on taking care of our trees and teach us more about them.

Apple Orchard

We can’t wait to add bees, chickens and more in the coming years!

The thing I like most is how much there is to learn, the trying new endeavors that add to the health and wellbeing of our whole family.

At Camp Paradise

Garden Walk

My geraniums in big hanging baskets around the cabin and in my pots throughout are the focal point of my summer blooms. Read more HERE.

My main focus in on ferns, geraniums and lots of pops of yellow and white.

I have some goals this Summer around our lake cabin to continue and to improve on.

  • My butterfly garden
  • My raised herb garden on the patio
  • My newer landscaping out front

I also love incorporating vintage items into my gardens here like my old bike and thrifted pieces.

Refurbished Garden Bench
Styling a Garden Bench

I get so much joy out of planting my pots and containers.

Inspiration is Everywhere

I find a lot of inspiration for my garden on places like Pinterest and also when I’m traveling.

I found an abundance of ideas when visiting Magnolia and their gardens at the Silos. Read about it HERE.

Weekly roundup of favorite things from White Arrows Home

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

  • My local book club met and I hosted. Rather than meet in our homes right now we are meeting at a favorite local shop, Earth Goods, to help give more support to small businesses. We read, Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club by J. Ryan Stradal. We had read this for my Paddle Club bookclub at my shop and it was such a hit, I recommended it for my other club too. We’ve been together for close to 10 years all meeting through our spin class.

This novel is written so well and full of layers about four generations of family and their family run Northwoods Supper Club.

It was such a great discussion with conversations ranging from the nuances of family business, legacy, grief and loss, mother-daughter relationships…

After our discussion, we headed to a favorite local supper club to enjoy the ambiance, old fashioneds and an ice cream drink flight.

Supper Club, Norwood Pines, Northwoods, Supper Club, Minocqua

Do you have fitness and wellness goals you are working on, trying to start or be consistent with?

WHAT I’M READING

We’ve been doing the Abide study by Jen Wilkin at my Tuesday Bible Study and I recently picked up her book Women of the Word, How to Study the Bible with Both Our Hearts and Our Minds.

WHAT I’M WATCHING

Our family is watching the new series on Apple + called Masters of the Air and really enjoying it.

We are a family of history buffs, especially on WWII.

This show is based on a true story of the men and women flying in and supporting the 100th Bomb group as they drop bombs over Germany and battle German fighter planes in B17 bombers, known as a “Flying Fortress”.

It stars Austin Butler (you may remember him from Elvis) and Callum Turner (Boys in the Boat) and is produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman who also brought us other series we watched, Band of Brothers and Pacific.

WHAT I’M LISTENING TO

I have several new songs I am loving.

Often I’ll search this playlist on my Apple Music to find new music and then add songs I like to my personal playlists.

What we fill our eyes, ears, hearts and minds with matters.

It matters everyday as we

Faith

First and foremost I want to fill myself with activities, information and entertainment that increase my faith walk.

Starting my day with quiet time reading the Bible and devotions helps lay a foundation for my day.

I spend time in prayer for the things on my heart and also those written in my prayer journal for others.

Throughout the day I continue to pray and talk to God knowing having Him with me is the only way I can get through any hard moments and having Him to rejoice in any good ones.

Praise music is essential to me too, it speaks to me deeply when I am feeling joyful and also when I need reminders of God’s promises.

I listen when I workout, when I write and work. even when I drive (If you drive past me, yep, I’m singing!)

Taking notes and journaling are also part of my practice to help me remember more and dig deeper.

Faith, coffee cup, His Mercies are New Every Morning, Teacup, Vintage Cotton Wreath, Journal, gift ideas for women

My weekly Bible Study really fills me up too as I learn from our leader and the great writers and teachers she brings us in each of our studies with workbook and video components.

This session we are doing Jen Wilkin’s Abide study on 1,2 & 3rd John.

My prayer partner and I also read through a book together taking as long as needed and talking about it in chunks as we go when we get together for breakfast to catch up between daily texts.

Right now we are reading through Memorizing Scripture and working on putting more verses in our hearts for quick recall to share or for our own reassurances.

Our last book was

Another way I’ve been learning scripture that works really well is with Dwell Differently.

They are temporary tattoos sent each month done in a design using the first letter of each word in the verse.

Family

My family.

Where do I even begin.

Being a wife and mom is all that!

My kids right now range between the ages of 23-15, three boys and two girls.

I’ve become a mom through natural birth and through adoption.

Lenz Family

Brian and I have many things we have been intentional about as we focus on family.

Time together is essential, having fun together and building memories.

Weekly date night for Brian and I has happened since the beginning and is something we still look forward to each week as a way to fully connect one on one. Read more HERE.

Seeds to so many of our dreams have been laid on date nights and then had time to get nurtured.

My recent post about ways to a calm home shares a lot of how we set the focus for family.

Friends

Spending time with friends also fills me up!

Whether getting together for coffee or planning activities, gatherings and outings, its a fun way to connect with other women to do life with.

Paddle Decorating, Painted Paddles, Painted Oars, Decorative Oars, antique paddles

I also love that my coworkers at my shop are my friends.

We have so much fun together!

Apparel at White Arrows Home the Shop Minocqua, WI and online vintage letter sweaters

Staying connected with friends from high school, college and other chapters of my life is also important to me and I wish I had more time to do it often.

But one thing about true friends is that no matter how much time comes between conversations or time together, you pick right back up where you left off!

A few of my favorite ways to stay in touch are quick messages. I have a friend who forwards on a devotion to me each morning and it is like getting a hug from afar.

The app Marco Polo lets my different friend groups share video messages and watch and respond when we have the time.

Scheduling a virtual zoom or FaceTime chat works great too. Grab a glass of wine or cup of coffee and settle in to reconnect or catch up.

Food

Daily I learn more and more about the importance of what food we put into our bodies.

Eating whole foods, as farm fresh as possible has the ability to heal us from the inside out and nourish us with good energy, elevating and steadying our emotions and attitudes.

I also love enjoying time making meals for my family, especially breakfast in the morning.

Pancakes

Fitness

I have several different ways I enjoy working out.

On the top of the list is any workout with my husband and kids.

We enjoy working out together and the fitness room we built in our guest house garage has been one of the best decisions ever.

We put in a glass garage door we can open on warm, pretty days and when it’s cold and yucky outside we can keep it closed, but still have the view of outside through all that glass, upping our energy levels.

Sometimes we all do the same workouts and sometimes we do our own thing.

Sometimes we head out for a run and we always love taking the dogs for walks.

Home Workout Fitness Studio

I think one fo the best ways to think about workouts is doing something that makes you loose your breath every day.

Maybe you love to swim, kickbox or do CrossFit.

Maybe you just love to hike a favorite trail.

That’s what is so wonderful about fitness, it can be whatever you enjoy and works for you.

If you like to do it alone, with a trainer, in a group or in a class.

You can challenge yourself to try new things, ask a friend to come along or stick to something you start with and watch how you improve.

Fitness, BOSU ball, Hoka shoes, workout room

My personal favorite fitness week includes two days of pilates, one of yoga, two days on my spin bike and two days doing HIIT workouts with my husband then going in our sauna.

Fashion

It is fun to find your style and then be on lookout for pieces to add to your wardrobe.

Whether there are certain shops or designers you love or you enjoy thrifting, it can be fun to collect timeless, investment pieces and add in accessories.

JORD Handbag

One of the things I’m doing this year is what I am calling “Last Chance Closet”, if I don’t wear something during the year than it is being donated.

I’m not going to do another year of “I’ll fit in that better soon,” or “I love it so I know I’ll wear it sometime.”

There are so many ways to do this, one popular way is to turn all your hangers one directions and then when you wear it turn it the other way, it’s a quick visual of what pieces need to be pulled.

Not sure what your style is or what to evolve into one?

Build Pinterest boards of what you like and get inspired.

Bring out your jewelry, scarves and hats and wear them proudly.

Dress up more than you dress down, it makes you feel good and boosts your confidence.

Furnishings

Furnishings in our homes can be a mix of signature pieces you spend a bit more on to trendy items and seasonal decor.

Each of our homes has a style reflecting what we love and how we like to use our spaces.

Finds

I always have my eye out for new finds to enjoy whether it’s a one time enjoyment like a special restaurant on a trip or a new to me vintage find at the antique store to bring home and help my house tell its story.

My vintage camper was one of those treasures.

Fun

There are so many ways to add fun into life.

Some are doing things with family and friends, some are pleasures on your own like curling up with a great book.

Fun can be doing regular things you enjoy or trying something new.

Big and small things can add fun, the catch is just that they make you smile and make your heart soar a bit higher.

Frills & Finery

There are so many sweet and beautiful things to add into life, I think of them as frills and finery.

It may be those little pleasures like pedicures, stops for a latte, or a monthly massage.

It may be picking out special stationary to write notes on and a pen that flows across the page of a pretty journal.

Maybe it’s using your grandma’s china more regularly, dotting your tears with an antique hankie and adding a dab of perfume.

Vintage Handkerchief

Flowers

I use a mix of faux and real flowers.

In my basement storage room I have a tub with a variety of blooms and stems in different colors, heights and seasonal themes that I can bring out as needed.

It is also fun to grab a grocery store bouquet and bring it home to arrange.

Valentine Box of Flowers

I often choose a bunch that look beautiful to me in that moment or will compliment entertaining I’m doing or a holiday.

Then when I get home I “shop” my vases and containers, many of them vintage, to find a fun way to display them.

There were a few posts that I wrote to share some of my arrangements HERE and HERE.

When using a vintage container I add mason jars inside to hold the water and protect the piece.

A Calm Home Has the Power to Positively Affect Everyone Who Walks Through the Door.

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

A calm home has the power to positively affect everyone who walks through the door, whether they stay for a short while or live there day to day.

In the same way that a space often filled with drama and chaos can be instantly felt, so can a space of peace.

I like to think of our home as a haven of calmness and as I think about what makes it that way, there are several routines, habits and actions that happen- some very intentional and some naturally- contributing in both big and small ways.

Morning Sunshine with Kristin Lenz

As I write, I’m praying that if you feel your home could use a little more serenity, these practical practices can help bring more peace.

Welcome to Camp Paradise

Our lakeside cabin came with its name, and just like you don’t change a boat’s name, we figured the same could be said for a dwelling, so decided to keep it.

The house is a full log cabin (think Lincoln Logs) that sits on the shores of Paradise Bay on the eastern edge of a large, deep lake in what’s known as The Northwoods of Wisconsin.

log cabin, cabin, cabin in the snow, log home

A lot of qualities about life in The Northwoods lead to many quiet and tranquil moments.

There are thousands of lakes, and water is a top provider of soothing moments.

A lot of the year snow blankets the trees and ground; and when it snows, the earth stills and sounds slow.

Places are spread out here Up North giving you space from others and often scenic, long drives to get where you are going.

Winter Snowy Road

There are lots of opportunities to get away and take time on a quiet trail through the woods.

But even though our surroundings are serene, that doesn’t always mean inside a home is.

How can we achieve a calm home?

Here are 8 simple ways.

Set the Tone

As a mom to my five kids and wife to my husband, I feel it is my privilege to set the tone of our home.

The intentions I set for my own health, positive mindset, daily routines and time spent, will directly affect those I love and the energy around.

Kristin Lenz

Schedule

I love a balance between working off my calendar and to do list and leaving room for spontaneity.

In different seasons of life I have had to be more scheduled than others depending on the ages of my kids, what they were involved in, what my husband’s day would look like and my own obligations and opportunities.

Vintage desk decor, lamp, clock and typewriter

Routines

Along the lines of having a schedule are routines.

Often routines can get a negative nod, seem dull or a must do task.

In our home, routines are cherished and looked forward too, even the daily ones.

Mornings and evenings especially come to mind.

There are a few morning routines that have had a great deal to do with our calm home and it starts with giving everyone an exciting reason to wake up- breakfast.

Pancakes

Years ago, when my children were little, my husband’s schedule was full of long days.

I dreamed of family dinners around the table, but that just wasn’t possible.

Rather than give him a guilt trip, or myself frustration, I decided we would do family breakfast instead.

He had more flexibility in the mornings and could be there to eat together and help with school drop offs.

Cabin Dining Room Table

As his schedule loosened over the years we have kept the breakfast tradition going, even with only two of our five kids left at home.

Each night my youngest son asks before bed, what’s for breakfast and heads off to slumber with a big smile on his face in anticipation.

The breakfasts aren’t always fancy (more often they are not) or take a long time to prepare.

It’s the act of service they provide to give my family a solid start to the day, one that is not rushed, but includes sometimes quiet and sometimes conversation, but always togetherness.

Another routine I look forward to is weekly date night.

My husband and I have been consistent all our married years with this. I wrote about it HERE.

date-night

Faith

Church is also a routine that gives our family its strongest foundation.

Praying together and for each other gives a deeper connection.

And peace flows from the hope we have through our faith.

Magnolia the Old Church

Part of that morning routine that gives a calm start to my day is getting up before the rest of the house and spending some quiet time reading my Bible and devotionals.

Tea Cup

Organization

Everything in its place.

We try.

The more often we get it right, the easier heading off to school or work is, finishing a project is, paying bills is…

Deciding on some simple “here is the spot” spaces is key.

When we don’t have to rush around looking for something or feel frustrated about where something is, calmness prevails.

I had cubbies built to put in our entry way that were big enough to hide lots of shoes, fit a backpack and hold the hats, lunchboxes, sports equipment and other needs.

mudroom, log home, entry way, cubbies, pendelton, Hudson Bay, wire baskets, vintage, woolwich, vintage thermos, barn wood

I’m one of those moms that sets things on the stairs for the kids to take up when they run to their rooms.

Getting organized is a constant reevaluation and work in progress.

Some strategies work and stick and others we keep trying until they do.

One of the feelings I have is that my kids can be responsible for their own organization (some are better than others for sure, but giving them the ownership is important.)

Starting in middle school they take over their own laundry for example.

Madras Quilts in Bunk Room of Cabin Cottage

When I want them to take some time to clean their spaces up or reorganize I always ask them with some flexibility on finishing the task to keep the control in their follow through.

I may ask on a Saturday morning that it be done by the end of the weekend or over lunch that it’s done before dinner.

There is rarely frustration when managing getting it done is up to their way of doing the task.

And I always like to ask one of my favorite questions, “Is there anything I can do to help?”

Flexibility

As I mentioned, I love a routine.

I love a schedule.

But I relish staying flexible for the moments that come up that are unplanned, unexpected or a change.

A Walk in Fall

Down Time

slippers, hype, magazines, reading

Priorities

Some of the most important things to keeping a calm home are keeping our health a priority.

What we fill our bodies with directly affects how we react to situations, our stress levels, our risk of illness, our sleep.

Fresh, whole foods are the key.

Our fitness and activity levels matter greatly too.

Purple Trail Planners

Making time to daily get moving needs to stay a significant focus.

When and how we do that is up to each of us.

Maybe you like to workout alone, maybe with a trainer or in a class.

Maybe you like to take a walk with your dog each day, maybe you love the challenge of cross fit or the rebalance of yoga.

It’s wonderful all the options to find your activity that gets your heart pumping.

My hope is you find your home calmer with the tips I’ve shared and more peace in the day to day.

Cozy Up in the Winter Season with Decor For Snow Days in easy ways all through your home to bring your joy factor up in simple yet big ways.

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

Winter decor helps snow days feel more cozy, but it can also add to our overall attitude.

When it’s cold outside, whether there is snow or not, the addition of extra cozy measures indoors make a big difference in how we embrace the season.

minocqua-buffalo-plaid-cozy-cabin

In many ways I crave the winter and the rest and restoration it brings.

There is comfort in the slowing down and extra self care that come into play in these darker months.

Welcome to Camp Paradise

What a difference this year has been in The Northwoods.

The first winter we lived Up North there was around 100 inches of snow.

My husband was driving his truck on the ice to plow an ice skating rink for the kids.

ice-skating-minocqua

We were ice bowling, ice fishing and snowmobiling.

Each winter has brought those fun outdoor activities where coming inside to warm up is such a welcome part of the memory making moments.

Cabin in the Snow

But this year we have no snow.

We’ve had some snowfall off and on, a few inches at times, but right now the driveway is clear for basketball playing instead of piled high for fort building.

Winter Building Snow Forts

The temperatures at times require a coat, but have often been just right in only a sweater, more like the Texas winters I grew up in.

It has been a disappointment for many who travel to our area for their winter recreational fun like snowmobiling the miles of trails, for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.

The businesses have been struggling as well with loss of revenue by the down numbers in tourism.

A few things can add to the positive twist when even the weather is unexpected and brings disappointment and hardship.

  • mindset
  • habits
  • support
  • adapting

Gain a positive mindset

We talk about the weather a lot.

It’s a common way to start a conversation and connect.

Much of it is just surface banter, but it can be a bit of a downer to those we visit with and to our own psyche.

So we need to make conscious decisions to keep our thoughts positive and our actions intentional to shift toward joyful moments.

Kristin Lenz welcomes you to her log cabin home in Minocqua, Wisconsin.

We can embrace the new, the temporary and the challenges by keeping them in perspective, holding out hope and creating a haven at home.

Tiny moments to look forward to can build on each other adding happy drops of pleasure into our days when we feel a bit emptied out.

Warm drinks bring a great deal of comfort, warm in our hands and warming our insides as they go down sip by sip.

Winter decor of roses in Vintage Snowdrift Tin on buffalo plaid plate on snowshoe tray and hot cocoa

There are habits to do around your home that take seconds, but add hours of enjoyment.

Lay soft blankets over the arms of chairs.

As you get home, as you walk into the room, it will beckon you to come curl up and sit a while.

Winter Decor- Hot Chocolate

When you do sit, be purposeful about what you then fill your mind, eyes, ears and heart with.

Maybe not the news or the weather.

Maybe have a book sitting there waiting, or a hobby you’ve begun like embroidery or knitting, a journal to write in.

Give your mind some true downtime.

Be intentional about capturing negative or frustrating thoughts right away and replace them with uplifting ones.

If you don’t know where to start then begin by listing and filling your mind with things you’re grateful for.

Being Positive Quote

Great Habits Lead to Gorgeous Home Life

Keeping it simple with habits that become automatic can stack and build to cozy moments in a gorgeous home life.

Even everyday objects like pretty slippers become a piece of decoration when set by the door or the side of the bed waiting for you.

Make a practice of waking and sliding into your soft slippers and pulling on a warm robe you have laying at the end of the bed.

Walk in the door or after running errands or working all day and switch into your slippers, take off your coat and pull on a cozy sweater.

Mr. Rogers had a lot of wisdom and it started in those first moments coming in the door.

Stone Fireplace

It only takes a moment to serve yourself a treat or a sliced up apple on a pretty dish instead of a paper towel or plastic plate.

Vintage Dishes to Mix and Match

I own a brick and mortar shop in Minocqua, Wisconsin and one of my favorite areas is our Dish Bar, a little room full of dishes, tea cups and saucers, tea pots and goblets all waiting to be mix and matched or discovered.

Have morning and nighttime rituals that restore you and prepare you, comfort you and nurture you.

Light the fire in the fireplace.

Pour a kombucha or glass of wine.

Keep on some background music.

Get in the habit of lighting candles and filling your home with fragrances that relax.

Support Local Small Businesses

A cozy winter enjoyment is searching out and supporting the local small businesses in your area.

Frequent the coffee shops, sit a while and gather with friends or take along a stack of notecards and write a few notes to some you haven’t seen in a while.

Purchase items that add to your home’s winter decor layers from these stores.

Pick up a candle, a throw blanket, a vase to add some fresh flowers from the grocery or some found natural objects.

Cozy decor for Winter

Be in tune with what’s happening in your local economy or those you support around the country.

When you hear times are tough you can still support by shopping online, buying a gift card or even sending an encouraging message.

The messages I receive from followers and customers really help keep me smiling.

cozy cabin, Northern Lights candle, log cabin, cottage

Home decor goes deeper than just outside accessories, it truly can add to our comfort, elevate our attitudes and fill our hearts.

Winter Decor, Woodfire Candle Company

Adapting

This year, winter has not been typical, not what was expected, but adapting my expectations, my outlook and the way I spend my time can help turn possible disappointments into possible marvelous moments.

One of the prayers I keep close to my mind and lips is The Serenity Prayer.

If I cannot change something (like the weather) then what is the point of being frustrated by it.

It wastes my time and my energy when I can better adapt and refocus on ways to enjoy what I do have control over.

Vintage Sled, Vintage Blankets, Buffalo Plaid, Cabin

Not doing the usual outdoor activities, while still not having the weather to work on landscaping and other outdoor projects, has freed up some time for me to work on indoor plans.

Organizing my closet.

I’m calling it the Last Chance Closet- what I don’t wear gets donated and not dreamed of the day I will fit in it again or have an event to wear it to.

Reallocating storage spaces.

Turning the coat closet outside the kitchen into my dream dish pantry and moving all the cleaning supplies from there into the closet under the stairs.

Dish Pantry

Sorting through the kids memory boxes and finishing up scrapbooks.

I can’t wait to surprise my youngest son (now 15) with some finished books.

So adapting to what I cannot change and embracing what I can is so productive and powerful.

Hudson Bay, Pendleton, Rustic Decor, Wooden Ladder, Winter Decor, Cabin, Log Cabin, Log Home, Woodwork, Plaid, Staircase

I’m adapting these days in more ways than to the weather as my kids are all growing up and becoming young adults.

One in college, one abroad, one in the work force and two in high school.

Though not empty nesters yet, my husband and I do find our busy, bustling home much quieter these days and are adjusting to more downtime just the two of us.

winter neutral decor, winter decor, neutral decor, cabin, cabin decor, cabin style, log cabin, buffalo plaid

My decor usually is inspired by what I see outside the windows of my cabin in the forest and the lake, but this year maybe my decor will inspire a bit more snow to fall outside.

Well, I can wish.

A few more pretty snowfalls would be welcomed before true spring.

But even if the flakes don’t fall, I’ll adapt and lean into my decorating to uplift my mindset, support local, small business practicing habits that bring joy.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

  • After lots of travel around the holidays, I’ve been home on a regular schedule with lots of time enjoying our cabin and consistent schedules.
  • I’ve been back at pilates again after a three year break and it feels so good. I’ve been so excited to see how my body does remember the moves and I picked back up right where I left off.

I’ve been able to go to yoga again a few times too.

My break in structured class schedules came about with COVID and then soon after things came out of quarantine I opened my shop. Three years later I feel I can begin to fit back in some of those morning practices.

The Yoga Shop

During those years I was still fitting in work outs in our home gym and I still do that now as well. Building our home gym was one of the best things we did when we did our guest house addition.

WEEKEND PLANS

How are you spending your Saturday?

We finally got a dump of snow, a couple of inches and enough to wake up to a fairy land and the plow coming to clear the driveway.

What a perfect morning to get to wake up slowly, climbing out of my flannel sheets to make pancakes for the kids.

Pancakes

Now I’m sitting around enjoying the view of the snow flocked trees out of our towering great room windows sitting by the fire writing.

My daughter is sitting across from me doing the same.

Honey, our Great Pyrenees is at my feet looking like a sherpa rug.

My mug is steaming and full of my favorite coffee, custom labeled and sold in my shop, roasted right here in Wisconsin at True Coffee in Madison.
