Though today we are such digitally connected world, maintaining close, meaningful and truly intimate relationships with friends and family who live far away can sometimes feel like a challenge. But we can use technology to our advantage. One of the simplest—and most enjoyable—ways to nurture those connections is by hosting virtual tea time over FaceTime, Zoom or other app. Keeping connecting over a drink face to face a comforting and timeless tradition.

A shared cup of tea, even from a distance, can provide a sense of intimacy, calm, and togetherness, helping to bridge the physical gap between loved ones. Whether you’re across the globe or just a few states apart, these creative ideas will make your virtual tea time something special and memorable.

Here are some creative ideas for hosting a virtual tea time that will make you feel closer to your loved ones, no matter where they are.

Choose a Theme

One of the joys of tea time is the opportunity to make it feel special. Adding a theme to your virtual tea gathering can bring an extra layer of fun and creativity. For instance, you could opt for:

  • Choosing a theme based on a particular country or culture. For example, a British afternoon tea with scones and finger sandwiches, a Japanese tea ceremony with matcha, or a Moroccan tea time with mint tea and pastries.
  • Celebrate the season with flavors that match the time of year—think spiced chai or apple cinnamon for fall, floral teas like jasmine or lavender for spring, or peppermint and citrus blends for winter.
  • Choose a book to read together and discuss it over your tea. You could pick a novel, a devotional, or even a collection of poetry. The discussions can add depth to your gathering, making it more meaningful.

During quarantine a few years ago I was doing many of these ideas with friends. Many from right in my hometown who I wasn’t able to meet with regularly, at that time, and others like high school friends I hadn’t talked to in years. It became a new way to connect I wanted to continue.

Send a Tea Package in Advance

One of the best ways to make your virtual tea time feel connected is by sending your friend or family member a small tea package before your meeting. Whether it’s a curated selection of loose leaf teas, a set of teabags, or an assortment of fun tea accessories like a new mug or a tea infuser, the thoughtful gesture will elevate the experience.

You could also send small treats or baked goods like homemade scones, cookies, or biscuits to accompany the tea. The act of receiving a physical package before your virtual meeting will create anticipation and excitement, making the event feel more tangible.

At my shop, White Arrows Home, in Minocqua, Wisconsin we have an area known as The Dish Bar where you can select a vintage tea cup and saucer and then have it mailed to a friend with a note to join you for tea.

Vintage Dishes to Mix and Match

Incorporate Fun and Interactive Activities

Make your virtual tea time even more memorable by including an activity that everyone can enjoy together. Here are some ideas:

Show and Tell: Have everyone share something meaningful, like a book they’re reading, a family heirloom, or a favorite memory related to tea. It’s a great way to learn more about each other’s lives and deepen your connections.

Crafting or DIY: For a creative twist, consider adding a craft element while chatting.

Focus on Deep Conversations and Catching Up

One of the most beautiful aspects of a virtual tea time is the ability to sit back, relax, and focus on meaningful conversations. Set aside the distractions of life and focus on reconnecting. Let your tea time be an opportunity to:

  • Share your life updates: Talk about what’s been going on in your life, from the small day-to-day moments to the big events. Don’t rush; take your time to enjoy the conversation and really listen to one another.
  • Discuss personal growth or challenges: Tea time can be an excellent opportunity to discuss personal goals, spiritual journeys, or any struggles you may be going through. It can feel like a safe space to open up and share vulnerable moments, offering support and encouragement.
  • Reflect on past memories: Take a trip down memory lane by reminiscing about moments you’ve shared in person—whether it’s family holidays, trips, or even small, everyday moments that meant a lot.
  • Gratitude Sharing: Start the tea time by sharing one thing you are grateful for that week. It could be something small like a relaxing moment or something bigger, like a personal achievement. It’s a great way to set a positive tone for the conversation.
  • Themed Conversation Starters: Prepare a list of conversation prompts or questions to inspire meaningful discussion. Topics could include childhood memories, dreams and goals, favorite books or movies, or reflections on faith or spirituality. Keep the atmosphere light and supportive, and encourage everyone to share openly.
  • Prayer or Blessing Time: Consider closing the gathering with a time of prayer or a blessing. It’s a beautiful way to end the call, offering each other support, encouragement, and lifting up any needs or concerns.

Virtual tea times can be a great way to connect grandparents with their grandkids. Set a weekly date or make it at random times to celebrate special moments.

Virtual tea time is a beautiful way to stay connected with friends and family, even when distance separates you. By infusing your gatherings with thoughtful themes, shared activities, and meaningful conversation, you can transform a simple video chat into a delightful, memorable experience.

Whether it’s catching up on life, sharing a cup of tea, or engaging in lighthearted fun, virtual tea time allows us to nourish our relationships and create new memories, even from miles apart. So, brew your favorite tea, put on your coziest outfit, and start planning your next virtual tea time—it’s the perfect way to reconnect and refresh your spirit, no matter where you are.

And if tea isn’t your favorite, enjoy coffee, hot chocolate or even a glass of wine.

Winter brings its own unique charm—crisp air, snowy landscapes, and cozy moments spent indoors.

But it also offers a perfect opportunity to step outside your usual routine and try something new.

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

Whether you’re looking for a fun family activity, a way to spark your creativity, or just want to shake up your winter season, here are 10 creative ideas to make the most of the colder months that are both fun and cozy.

1. Go Ice Skating

Ice skating is a time-honored winter tradition that’s perfect for anyone looking to embrace the chilly season with a little movement.

Whether you choose to glide across an outdoor rink beneath twinkling holiday lights or warm up indoors at a local arena, ice skating offers a unique blend of fun and fitness.

It’s a great way to work out without feeling like you’re exercising—burning calories, strengthening muscles, and improving balance all while enjoying the winter air (or cozy indoor warmth).

backyard hockey, ice skating, northwoods living

Whether you’re a seasoned skater or a complete beginner, it’s an activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels.

Plus, many rinks offer rentals, so you don’t even need to own skates to join in the fun.

So, grab your friends, your family and hit the ice for a memorable winter outing!

2. Build a Snowman (or Snow Sculptures)

When snowflakes start falling, there’s no better way to embrace the season than by heading outside to build a snowman or get creative with snow sculptures.

Gather your family, friends, or even neighbors for an impromptu snowman-building contest, or challenge each other to create imaginative designs like snow animals, castles, or abstract art.

You can find some fun ideas on my Winter Pinterest Board.

Build a Snowman

Building a snowman is more than just rolling snow into big balls—it’s a chance to let your imagination run wild, experimenting with different snow textures, props for eyes, noses, and scarves, and even adding personality to your frosty creations.

If you’re in a place that doesn’t often get snow, it’s a nostalgic way to make the most of the winter weather.

3. Sledding

Sledding is one of those classic winter activities that never loses its charm, no matter how old you get.

The thrill of speeding down a snowy hill with the cold wind in your face and a sense of freedom in your chest is something that stays with you.

Whether you’re using a traditional sled, a plastic toboggan, or even an old-fashioned wooden sled, there’s nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of the descent.

Vintage Sled, Vintage Blankets, Buffalo Plaid, Cabin

And it’s not just about the ride itself; sledding is also about the laughter, the occasional tumble, and the pure joy of being outdoors in the winter.

Find a hill with a nice, gentle slope for the kids or go for a more daring incline if you’re after a more adventurous experience.

It’s a simple activity that’s easy to do with family or friends, and the best part is that the fun never seems to end—you’ll be racing up the hill just to go down again and again!

4. Hot Cocoa Bar

After a day spent braving the cold, there’s nothing better than warming up with a cup of hot cocoa.

But why settle for a plain mug of cocoa when you can set up an entire hot chocolate bar at home?

Create your own winter wonderland of toppings and mix-ins, like whipped cream, colorful marshmallows, crushed peppermint, chocolate shavings, or even a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg.

Hot Chocolate Bar, Log Cabin, Cabin

For a more indulgent experience, add caramel sauce, toffee bits, or mini candy canes for extra flavor.

Set up the bar with various types of hot chocolate—think dark chocolate, white chocolate, or spiced cocoa—for everyone to customize their drink just the way they like it.

It’s the perfect way to spend a cozy evening indoors with loved ones, sipping on sweet treats while you watch a holiday movie, read a book, or just chat by the fire.

This activity is also great for entertaining guests, making it a festive and interactive way to warm up during the colder months.

5. Winter Hiking or Snowshoeing

Winter hiking or snowshoeing offers a peaceful and serene way to explore nature during the colder months.

While many people think of hiking as a spring or summer activity, winter transforms the outdoors into a breathtaking landscape of quiet beauty.

If you’ve never tried snowshoeing before, it’s an easy-to-learn activity that allows you to walk on snow-covered trails without sinking into the powder, making it ideal for areas with deep snow.

Snowshoes

For those who prefer a more traditional hike, many trails are still accessible in winter, providing a crisp, calm atmosphere and fewer crowds.

Winter hiking offers a chance to spot wildlife in its natural habitat, experience the quiet stillness of a snowy forest, and enjoy the beauty of frost-covered trees or frozen lakes.

Plus, the cold air can be invigorating, making you feel like you’re truly connected to the outdoors.

Layer up, grab your boots or snowshoes, and discover the winter wonderland that’s waiting just outside your door.

6. Take a Winter Photography Walk

Winter landscapes are stunning and can offer beautiful photo opportunities. Bundle up, take your camera or phone, explore your surroundings while documenting the beauty of the season.

Try making it a challenge with family or friends inviting them to join in and share their favorite winter moments.

Winter Photography

You can create daily or weekly prompts, such as “Best Snowy Landscape,” “Coziest Winter Setup,” or “Funniest Winter Moment.”

Have everyone share their pics online or in a group chat.

7. Bake Treats

Winter is the ultimate time to indulge in baking, whether you’re a seasoned pro in the kitchen or just getting started.

The chilly weather and cozy atmosphere of your kitchen make it the perfect setting for whipping up some sweet or savory treats.

Gingerbread cookies, spiced cakes, and hearty pies are staples, but you can also experiment with new recipes, like hot cocoa brownies or cinnamon rolls.

The aroma of freshly baked goods filling the house is enough to make anyone feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Pretzel Sea Salt Cookies

Baking is not only a comforting solo activity, but it’s also a wonderful way to spend time with family or friends.

Share your delicious creations with neighbors, or deliver a festive batch of cookies to loved ones as a thoughtful gift. Stop in White Arrows the Shop to find the perfect plate for gifting on from our Dish Bar.

If you prefer, you can keep your treats all to yourself to savor throughout the season—just be sure to have a cup of hot cocoa or coffee on hand to enjoy with them!

8. Go Skiing or Snowboarding

Downhill skiing is one of my favorite activities!

If you live near a ski resort—or if you’re planning a winter getaway—skiing or snowboarding is one of the most thrilling ways to experience the winter season.

Whether you’re a seasoned expert carving down the slopes or a beginner eager to learn, these high-energy sports offer an incredible way to make the most of the winter months.

Skiing and snowboarding aren’t just about the sport itself—they’re also about the scenery.

Picture yourself gliding down a snow-covered mountain with panoramic views of snowcapped peaks and pristine forests.

Skiing in Montana

The adrenaline rush from speeding down the slopes is unmatched, and for those looking to try something new, ski resorts often offer lessons, making it easy for first-timers to get the hang of it.

Whether you’re into powdery runs or thrilling terrain parks, skiing and snowboarding are perfect for creating lasting memories on the mountain.

9. Have a Winter Picnic

Who says picnics are only for the summer?

With a little preparation, a winter picnic can be an unforgettable experience.

Bundle up in cozy layers, pack a thermos of hot soup, and head to a scenic park or even a snowy field for a winter wonderland picnic.

The crisp, cold air makes the experience feel special, and there’s something magical about sitting outdoors with snow gently falling around you.

Picnic with Skotch Kooler

Pack hearty foods that will warm you from the inside out, like stews, sandwiches, or hot baked goods, and don’t forget your favorite hot drinks—whether it’s a thermos of cocoa or mulled cider.

For extra comfort, bring along blankets or insulated cushions to sit on, and be sure to bring a thermos or two for something warm to sip while you relax.

A winter picnic is a peaceful way to embrace the cold, connect with nature, and enjoy a delicious meal with friends or family.

10. Create a Winter Wonderland Indoors

Even if the weather outside is frightful, you can still create a magical atmosphere inside your home.

Turn your living room into a cozy winter wonderland with twinkling fairy lights, paper snowflakes, and winter greenery like pine boughs.

Add some soft throws and pillows to create a warm, inviting space, perfect for curling up with a cup of tea or a good book.

You can also get creative with seasonal decorations like homemade wreaths or candles in wintery scents.

Winter Decor- Hot Chocolate

The key is to embrace the season’s beauty indoors by incorporating textures, colors, and lighting that evoke the magic of winter.

Whether you host friends for a gathering or simply enjoying the ambiance with your family, a cozy winter home can make the colder months feel extra special.

11. Host a Winter Craft Party

A winter craft party is a wonderful way to bring friends and family together during the colder months.

Get creative with activities that fit the season, like making DIY holiday cards, decorating ornaments, or crafting homemade snow globes.

You can even try your hand at knitting scarves or making felt snowflakes.

Whether you’re crafting holiday decor, creating personalized gifts, or just having fun with seasonal projects, it’s the perfect opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones while being productive.

Make sure to set up a cozy space with plenty of supplies, a warm drink station, and some festive music to get everyone into the spirit.

Not only will you leave with a sense of accomplishment, but you’ll also have unique handmade items that will add a personal touch to your home or make thoughtful gifts.

12. Make Homemade Candles with Winter Scents

There’s something so comforting about lighting a candle on a cold winter night, and making your own adds a personal touch to your home decor.

Winter scents like cinnamon, pine, and vanilla evoke cozy memories and can help you transform your space into a relaxing haven.

Creating homemade candles is surprisingly easy and can be a fun, creative project for a solo afternoon or a group activity.

Nautical Candle Holders

Choose your favorite scent or blend a few to create your own signature fragrance.

You can even add dried herbs, spices, or glitter to make your candles extra special.

If you’re looking for a meaningful holiday gift, homemade candles are an excellent idea—they’re thoughtful, personalized, and always appreciated.

Whether you keep them for yourself or share them with loved ones, DIY candles are a beautiful way to bring warmth to your home.

13. Start a Winter Journal

Winter is the perfect time to slow down, reflect, and capture the essence of the season in a journal. Whether you’re a writer, an artist, or simply someone who enjoys documenting life’s moments, starting a winter journal can be a deeply rewarding experience.

Use the pages to jot down your winter adventures—whether you’re hiking through snowy trails, baking seasonal treats, or enjoying a peaceful evening by the fire.

You can also sketch winter scenes, write down cozy recipes, or capture thoughts and reflections on the season.

Great Day to Start Journaling

A winter journal is a great way to embrace the stillness of the colder months, and it provides a wonderful way to look back on your memories in years to come.

Plus, it’s a perfect way to channel creativity and stay mindful during this quieter time of year.

14. Winter Stargazing

On clear winter nights, the sky is often at its most breathtaking. Bundle up in your warmest clothes and head outside for some winter stargazing.

The crisp, cold air makes the stars appear sharper and brighter, and with the lack of light pollution in some areas, you may be able to spot constellations more easily.

This is the perfect time to observe the wonders of the night sky—whether it’s a meteor shower, the Big Dipper, or the Orion constellation.

Stargazing also gives you a sense of connection to the vastness of the universe and can be a meditative experience.

Night Cabin

Find a quiet, open space with minimal light interference, and spend time marveling at the celestial beauty above.

Winter stargazing is a peaceful, awe-inspiring activity that brings a sense of calm and wonder, perfect for unwinding after a long day.

15. Host a Game Night

When the weather keeps you indoors, a game night can bring everyone together for some fun and laughter.

You can enjoy trivia, charades, or even play classic board games like Monopoly or Scrabble.

Here’s a post with some of our favorite family games.

For a winter twist, you can create your own themed trivia questions, or set up a movie or song guessing game.

Kristin Lenz

Game nights are a great way to connect with loved ones, and they also helps lift your spirits during the colder months.

Make it extra festive by offering winter snacks and cozy drinks, and encourage everyone to wear their comfiest sweaters or even winter pajamas!

16. DIY Hot Toddy or Cocktail Tasting

Winter is the perfect time to experiment with new drinks, especially those that warm you up from the inside out.

Hot toddies, mulled wine, and seasonal cocktails are perfect for cozying up with friends or unwinding after a busy day.

Organize a DIY cocktail or hot toddy tasting with a few different recipes, and get creative by adding various spices, fruits, or herbs to experiment with flavors.

Buffalo Plaid, Hudson Bay Blanket, Pendleton, Baileys, Roaring Fire, Fireplace, Cozy

For example, try a cinnamon-spiced hot toddy or a cranberry-orange sangria. Set up a tasting station with all your ingredients and enjoy sampling your creations.

This is a great way to add a fun twist to your winter evenings, and if you’re looking for a thoughtful holiday gift, you can bottle your custom cocktails for friends to enjoy.

17. Create a Winter-Themed Scavenger Hunt

Winter-themed scavenger hunts are a fantastic way to get outside, explore your neighborhood, and engage in a little friendly competition.

Whether you’re hunting for pinecones, snowflakes, holiday decorations, or even specific animals like winter birds, a scavenger hunt adds an element of adventure to any winter outing.

If you live in an area with snow, you could even hide little treasures or clues beneath the snow for extra fun.

lake cabin in the snow

Create clues that lead participants from one item to the next, or turn it into a race for who can find everything first.

For an indoor option, you could hide small winter-themed objects like snow globes or holiday ornaments around the house.

This activity is not only entertaining but encourages participants to embrace the winter season by exploring the beauty around them.

18. Make a DIY Snow Globe

Craft your own personalized snow globes using jars, mini figurines like pine trees and snowmen, glitter, and glycerin.

snow globe

This is a great activity for kids or a fun craft night with friends.

19. Create a Winter Soundtrack Playlist

What’s a winter day without the right soundtrack?

Curate a winter playlist that suits your mood, whether it’s peaceful and cozy, upbeat and festive, or nostalgic with classic winter tunes.

Share it with others or use it as your soundtrack while you relax at home or play it during your activities and on winter outings.

20. Build an Ice Lantern

Create your own winter lanterns by filling balloons with water, freeze them outdoors, and then pop the balloon to reveal a beautiful, translucent ice lantern. Then add a candle inside. The result is a glowing, icy lantern perfect for lighting up your front yard or decorating your home with wintery beauty.

21. Plan a “Staycation” Winter Retreat

If you’re not traveling this winter, make your home a winter retreat.

Turn your living space into a cozy retreat with activities like an indoor spa day or a movie marathon.

Stone Fireplace

Enjoy hot drinks, and even take virtual tours of snowy destinations.

A “staycation” is the perfect excuse to relax and enjoy the comforts of home.

22. Make Winter-Themed Terrariums

Bring a little nature indoors by crafting winter-themed terrariums.

Fill a glass container with faux snow, miniature winter figurines, and tiny pinecones or branches.

It’s a low-maintenance decoration that adds a touch of winter magic to your home—and can be a great gift idea for someone special to lift their winter blues.

23. Go on a “Winter Beach” Adventure

If you live near a coast, consider taking a walk along the beach in winter. The landscape will look entirely different in the cold, with dramatic waves, sea foam, and maybe even a beach fire!

24. Try Winter Cooking Classes (or DIY)

Try making hearty stews, warming curries, or classic comfort foods like pot pie or fondue.

Winter is the perfect time to experiment with hearty, comforting meals.

Try out winter-inspired cooking, like slow-cooked stews, curries, or classic comfort foods like pot pie and fondue.

Consider joining an online cooking class or simply experiment with winter dishes from different cultures.

Host a cozy, home-cooked meal with friends or family.

It’s the perfect time to start a Cookbook Club, like a book club, but where you read and cook through cookbooks, meeting once a month to discuss and share a favorite recipe.

These activities will surely inspire your creativity and bring even more magic to the winter months!

In 2013, we made the exciting decision to move to Camp Paradise, our lake house, full time. We became the second owners of a charming full log cabin located in the serene Northwoods of Wisconsin. The original owners had designed and built it as a vacation retreat, and we were thrilled to continue its legacy.

Log Cabin

In the early years while vacationing at Camp Paradise, our five kids would all pile into the bunk room to sleep. Those were some of the most precious moments—full of laughter, stories, and memories. I still fondly recall sitting in the rocking chair in the corner, reading to them long into the night as they snuggled into their cozy, camp-striped blankets before drifting off to sleep.

When we moved North permanently, our kids were also growing up and wanting more space to themselves, so the two older kids moved to the two available rooms upstairs.

You can read more about our decision to move in this post.

The kids were spreading out into the house and more guests were starting to come and visit.

There’s an often said phrase around our area, that you will never know how many friends you have until you own a lake home. We loved having friends and family come visit and were always extra excited when grandparents would start coming for longer stays as they retired.

We started dreaming about having a designated space for guests as well as more room for our kids as they grew.

As often happens with Brian and me, a little spark of an idea becomes fun to plan. Each week we have a weekly date night and our conversations turn to dreams. Our guest room idea blossomed into a full guest house.

See how we keep date night possible and a priority in this post.

Why Build a Guest House?

We envisioned a guest house that would offer:

  • Privacy for Guests: A place where guests could enjoy their own space while still being close enough to the main cabin to share meals and activities.
  • Extra Room for Gatherings: We wanted to have an extra space that would provide a gathering area near the guest rooms.
  • Aesthetic Harmony: We wanted the guest house to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings and the main cabin’s rustic aesthetic, so it would feel like a true extension of our home.

We also made a list of all the things we wished our main house had space for:

  • extra garage space as our kids all started driving
  • workout room
  • designated guest room that can stay clean and ready
  • extra bedrooms for older kids

Then I started sketching, searching the Internet and Pinterest for ideas inside and out.

Step 1: Planning and Design

The first step in building our guest house was determining the size, layout, and functionality of the space. We wanted something cozy yet functional, and ideally, it would not only serve as a place for sleeping and the sitting area, but also laundry rooms and bathrooms. We also officially added more garage space and a workout room on the dream list.

Here’s how we approached the design:

  • Size and Layout: We decided on a two story cabin with living space above and garages below, a style that would fit within the existing footprint of our property. There would be a simple wet bar, a comfy living area, two full bathroom rooms upstairs, and cozy bedrooms seemed like the perfect balance.
  • Material Choices: To maintain the rustic charm of the main cabin, we chose half log siding (even though our main house is full log) and natural stone accents for the exterior. So the look is the same. Lots of windows to let in natural light offer beautiful views of the surrounding nature. We included three dormers to coordinate with the two on the main cabin.

I took my sketch to a local designer and had them draw out the floor plan.

Step 2: Building the Guest House

Once we had a clear vision and design, it was time to begin construction. We hired a contractor, but we were still very hands-on with the process.

  • Foundation and Framing: The foundation was the first step, and because we’re located in an area with cold winters, we went with a slab foundation that would keep the building insulated and secure. Once that was in place, the framing went up quickly.
  • Interior Work: Inside, we kept things simple and added the cozy with our decor and rustic cabinetry for the wet bar and bathrooms. I knew I wanted plaid carpet going up the stairs and in the main living area.

Step 3: Furnishing the Guest House

Once the structure was built, it was time to make it feel like home. We wanted the guest house to feel both stylish and comfortable, with all the little touches that make a space inviting. Here’s what we did:

  • Rustic Furniture: We went for a blend of vintage and rustic pieces—think wooden bed frames, a reclaimed wood table for puzzles and games, and plush, soft seating that would keep guests relaxed and comfortable.
  • Cozy Bedding and Textiles: Soft bedding with down comforters, wool throws, and plenty of pillows made the bedrooms feel like a cozy retreat. We want guests to feel like they are staying in a special place, with plenty of blankets to snuggle under.
  • Decor: The decor incorporates vintage elements like old paddles and snow shoes, natural elements like a wood backsplash, artwork, and lamps to add a warm light in the mornings and evenings. We also include little touches like fresh flowers or potted plants to bring the outdoors in when people come to stay.

Step 4: Making It Functional for Guests

While aesthetics were important, we also wanted to ensure the guest house was fully functional. Here are some features we incorporated:

  • Wet Bar: We included a small wet bar with a mini fridge, sink, and microwave so guests could feel self-sufficient, but would still come to the main house for meals. A kuerig and self serve coffee station is on the bar to enjoy morning coffee or cozy drinks anytime.
  • Bathrooms: The guest house has a two full bathrooms, one with a walk-in shower, and one with a shower tub that blend comfort with style.
  • Wi-Fi and Technology: We ensured that there was reliable Wi-Fi throughout the guest house as well as a television in the sitting area.
coffee station

Step 5: The Finishing Touches

Finally, it was time for the finishing touches. From hanging artwork to installing lighting, we took extra care to make sure the space felt welcoming and lived-in. We filled the shelves with books, puzzles and games for guests to enjoy.

For the lower level, we split the garages into a double garage and a single divided by a little porch and entry way to the upstairs.

The single garage we fit out for our workout room. Our family loves to workout together and its one of the most used spaces.

Adding a glass garage door on the workout room was one of the best decisions as it not only lets in a lot of natural light, but gives extra energy to workouts being able to see out. On great weather days we open the door up and use the inside space and the driveway.

Home Gym Workout Room Spin Bike

We also plumbed this space for a possible future kitchen in case we ever need a wheelchair accessible living area in the future. We would be able to make this workout space living space.

Step 6: Welcoming Our First Guests

After months of hard work, we were thrilled to finally welcome our first guests to the space. It was everything we had dreamed of—cozy, functional, and a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern convenience. Our friends and family loved it, and it’s quickly become a favorite getaway spot.

Tips for Building Your Own Guest House

If you’re considering building your own guest house or cabin retreat, here are a few tips based on our experience:

  • Plan for Functionality: Think about the flow of the space and what your guests will need. Will they need a full kitchen, or just a small kitchenette? Will they come for a weekend stay or an extended vacation?
  • Sustainability is Key: Consider using eco-friendly materials and renewable energy sources to make your guest house more sustainable.
  • Stay True to Your Style: Whether you’re going for rustic, modern, or minimalist, make sure the guest house reflects your personal style and complements the main house and surrounding nature.
  • Budget for Unexpected Costs: Construction always comes with surprises, so be sure to leave some room in your budget for unexpected expenses.
Guest House

Final Thoughts

Building a guest house at our cabin has been one of the most rewarding projects we’ve undertaken. It’s not only provided us with more space to host family and friends, but it’s also given us a tranquil retreat that blends perfectly with the surrounding nature. Whether you’re dreaming of a cozy getaway or simply want more space for guests, a guest house is a fantastic addition that can transform your home.

We know many more memories are ahead for this beautiful space.

Finding the perfect hostess gift can be tricky — you want something thoughtful, useful, and a sweet reflection of your appreciation for the host’s time and effort.

Thanksgiving, fall fashion, winter fashion, cornucopia, fall flowers

Whether you’re attending a casual dinner, a festive holiday party, or a cozy weekend gathering, the right gift can leave a lasting impression.

Here are 14 creative and versatile hostess gift ideas that will suit any occasion.

Unique Plant or Succulent

A low-maintenance plant or a trendy succulent makes a lovely hostess gift that adds life and greenery to any space. Choose a plant that’s easy to care for, like a snake plant or a pothos, and pair it with a chic pot or planter. If your host isn’t known for having a green thumb, opt for an air plant or a small cactus that requires minimal care.

Succulent Decor

Gourmet Coffee or Tea Sampler

For hosts who love a good cup of coffee or tea, a premium sampler is a perfect choice. Look for high-quality beans or unique loose-leaf tea blends. Add a stylish mug or tea infuser for a complete gift. If your host has a particular brewing method (like a French press, pour-over, or espresso machine), you can choose products that complement their coffee or tea rituals.

Morning at the Cabin, Coffee, Buffalo Plaid, Coffee Bar

Shop White Arrows Coffee and Tea.

Cookbook from a Favorite Chef or Cuisine

If your host loves to cook, a beautiful cookbook can be an inspiring and practical gift. Look for cookbooks that focus on their favorite cuisine, cooking style, or chef. If they enjoy trying new things, consider books that focus on global dishes, seasonal ingredients, or healthy meals. You can even pair the book with a few kitchen gadgets or spices to enhance the theme. A vintage cookbook can always be a great idea too.

Paper Napkins

Beautiful, high-quality paper napkins are a subtle yet elegant gift. Whether your host loves to host informal brunches or more sophisticated dinner parties, a set of stylish napkins will come in handy for any occasion. You can find them in fun patterns or have them custom-printed with your host’s initials for a more personal touch.

Luxury Hand Cream or Body Lotion

Pamper your host with a luxurious hand cream or body lotion from a high-end brand. Look for products with natural ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, or lavender essential oils. These thoughtful gifts are especially appreciated during the colder months when dry skin is a concern, and they’ll remind your host of your kindness every time they use it.

Flowers

Bring flowers, but have them already in a vase. It’s not always convenient for a hostess to take time away from guests or prep duties to get a bouquet into water and find a vase around her house. Find a beautiful vase in antique shop or thrift store and put a pretty bouquet from the grocery store inside. The special vase makes it a lasting gift to remember.

Easy, Pretty Grocery Store Flower Arrangements in our cabin

Homemade Gifts

A homemade cutting board can be both a beautiful and practical gift. If you’re handy with woodworking, you can craft one yourself from a piece of high-quality wood like maple, walnut, or bamboo. Personalize it by engraving your host’s initials, a meaningful date, or a favorite quote. You could also get creative by adding a painted design or pattern to match your host’s kitchen decor. It’s a gift they can use every day or display as a centerpiece in their home.

Tip: To elevate the gift, pair it with a set of artisanal kitchen knives or gourmet olive oil.

Vanilla extract is a classic ingredient that adds depth to any recipe, from baked goods to savory dishes. Homemade vanilla extract is not only a thoughtful gift, but it’s easy to make and has a luxurious feel. Simply split a few vanilla beans and steep them in a bottle of good-quality vodka (or rum for a slightly different flavor) for about 8-10 weeks. Once it’s ready, decant the extract into a decorative bottle, and add a cute label with instructions or a personal note.

Tip: Consider pairing it with some homemade baked goods like cookies or muffins to make a themed gift.

Board Game or Card Game

For a host who loves to entertain or enjoys family time, a well-chosen board game or card game can be an excellent gift. Pick something that’s easy to learn, but still fun and engaging for guests of all ages. A game like Codenames, Ticket to Ride, or a classic deck of cards can provide hours of enjoyment for the host and their guests.

Winter Cabin Coffee Table Decor

Luxury Tea Towels or Linen Napkins

Elegant and practical, a set of high-quality linen or cotton tea towels or napkins is a great gift for a host who enjoys hosting dinner parties. Opt for a neutral color palette or classic patterns like stripes, plaids or checks that will complement their kitchen or dining room. These towels or napkins add a bit of sophistication to everyday tasks.

Shop White Arrows Home Dish Towels.

Coffee Table Book

A beautifully designed coffee table book makes for a thoughtful and stylish gift. Choose one that matches your host’s interests, whether it’s art, design, travel, cooking, photography, or architecture. A high-quality, visually stunning book is something your host will love displaying in their living room or guest space — a conversation starter that blends well with their décor and adds to the ambiance of their home

Gourmet Popcorn

For a fun and unique gift, grab some gourmet popcorn. If it comes it beautiful packaging its ready to gift, but if its not add it into a stylish popcorn bowl. Your host can enjoy a cozy movie night with unique and flavorful popcorn — a treat that’s both creative and consumable.

Minocqua Popcorn, Popcorn, popcorn bar, popcorn bowl, specialty popcorn

Drink Stirrers

Elevate your host’s cocktail game with a set of stylish drink stirrers. Whimsical designs like whether a mismatched set of vintage swizzles or new options, drink stirrers add a fun and functional touch to any drink. It’s a small gift that can make a big impression at their next gathering.

Candles

A luxurious, artisanal candle is always a safe bet, but why not give a candle that goes beyond just a pretty scent? Choose one with an unusual or seasonal fragrance, like rosemary and pine for winter, lavender and lemon for spring, or even whiskey and vanilla for a cozy, warm vibe. You could also consider a candle in an interesting container — perhaps a vintage glass or a hand-thrown ceramic vessel — that can be repurposed once the wax is gone. Include a decorative container of matches.

cozy cabin, Northern Lights candle, log cabin, cottage

Shop our Signature White Arrows Home Firewood Candle.

A Fine Bottle of Liquor

For the host who enjoys a good drink, a bottle of high-quality liquor can be an excellent gift. Consider a bottle of their favorite spirit, whether that’s a classic bottle of whiskey, aged rum, premium tequila, or artisanal gin. You could also look for limited-edition releases, rare vintages, or local craft spirits to make it extra special. Pair it with a set of fancy cocktail glasses or an elegant decanter for a truly impressive gift.

No matter what you choose, the best hostess gifts reflect thoughtfulness and gratitude.

The key is to tailor the gift to the host’s personal tastes and interests.

By selecting something that shows you know and appreciate them, you’re sure to make your host feel special and loved.

Happy gifting!

Planning events for The Shop is one of my favorite things to do with my creative, talented staff.

We don’t plan events just to increase our store sales, but to encourage customer involvement bringing more visitors to the whole community.

We want to help people make connections with others through our events and we have seen new friendship form as customers mingle and meet each other.

White Arrows Home the Shop in Minocqua, Wisconsin

Some of our events are annually, some monthly and some like Sips are weekly.

Sips ‘Til Six

Every week we host Sips ’Til Six. Normal business hours are 10 a.m.- 3 p.m., but on Thursdays we extend the hours until 6 offering a specialty drink to sip on while shopping.

Pink Squirrel Cocktail

This helps anyone who cannot typically make it during regular hours or gives an extra incentive for a fun outing.

Pop Ups

There are also Pop Ups throughout the year. Some regularly scheduled and some are one time events.

Jackie of Sweet Pies of Mine comes to sell homemade pies once a month.

We’ve had a pop up of fresh cut greens sold during the holidays.

The Girl Scouts have come and sold their cookies.

The shop has also welcomed authors, artists and evening wine tastings.

Author Jeff Nania at White Arrows Home

Some of the most popular events are hosted annually like the Kentucky Derby Party, Plaidurday (National Celebration of all things Plaid) and Deer Widows Night.

Rising Tides

One of the great things we do for events is try to partner with other local businesses to bring exposure to others too.  For example, the local distillery donates the bourbon for The Kentucky Derby party’s mint juleps.

At White Arrows Home, we believe that, “Rising tides lift all boats,” (JFK) and when strong, creative businesses work together, we all thrive.

Another way we help “rise tides” is hosting a monthly local gathering we founded for fellow women small business owners to encourage and learn from each other.

September

We celebrate our birthday the Tuesday after Labor Day. And this year we are turning 3! Come celebrate with us and enjoy birthday cupcakes on Tuesday, September 5!!

Jackie of Sweet Pies of Mine will be here Saturday, September 16 from 10 a.m. until sold out.

Sweet Pies of Mine Homemade Pies

October

Plaidurday is the Worldwide Celebration of All Things Plaid held annually on the first Friday in October!

You will often find us in Plaid at White Arrows Home, but on Plaidurday we pull out all the stops.

We always love adding in some plaid surprises like these plaid cookies we gave away.

This year our Plaidurday celebration will be even BIGGER! It’s going to be a full couple day celebration worth marking your calendars for!

Northwoods Experience Weekend 2023

  • Thursday, October 5 4-6 p.m. Shop open for Sips ’til Six. Enjoy our special
  • Thursday, October 5 5:00-7:00 p.m. Bingo & Bevs in The Paddle Club Registration required. Sign up HERE.
  • Friday, October 6 is Plaidurday! Wear your plaid in to The Shop from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m.for 10% off purchases of anything plaid!
  • Friday, October 6 Fish Fry in the evening. Details coming.
  • Saturday, October 7 Flannel Fest Market on the grounds of White Arrows Home. Follow along on Instagram for info on vendors.

November

In November we celebrate some of our favorite events here at The Shop and amongst our customers.

We schedule professional Family Christmas Photos in front of one of our vintage campers each holiday season with one of our two professional photographers on staff. This year they will be Saturday, November 11. Sign ups will be announced as we get closer.

VIntage Camper Decorated For Christmas- Holiday Photo Backdrop

Deer Widows Night is always the Friday before Thanksgiving. A ladies night with a special cocktail and snack while you shop.

Their biggest event is Shop Small, on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. One of their vintage campers is brought in to serve a hot chocolate bar and goodie bags are given out. Lines form before the doors open.

We are closed on Thanksgiving day and also on Black Friday. When The Shop reopens on Saturday it is decked for the Holidays and festivities.

December

This year we will be adding some new events to December.

Vintage Santa will be here to take pictures with on Saturday, December 9 from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m.

We will hosting a Holiday Party (we are still dreaming up the details!) Can’t wait to share it all with you as soon as it comes together!

March

In March we host the Northwoods Shop Hop inviting some of our favorite shops from nearby towns like Rhinelander, Three Lakes and Eagle River to join us. It encourages exploring the area, finding new shops our customers may never have been to and a fun reason to get out during the mud season.

April

In April we bring in the flowers (even if there’s still snow on the ground) for our Garden Party.

May

Our Kentucky Derby party is such a fun celebration at The Shop! In 2024 we will be celebrating Saturday, May 4 during our open hours. We serve mint juleps, host games and have the races on.

Memorial Day Weekend kicks off our monthly Minnow Bucket Market with vendors filling The Shop’s yard with makers, artists, bakers, authors and more.

7 Thanksgiving Table Place Setting Options with inspiration to bring your table together in a special way.

Setting a special table is something I have always loved to do. When I was growing up that was my favorite way to help. If my mom was entertaining, I’d be out helping get all the table styling done.

I’m excited to be sharing as part of A Thanksgiving Blog Hop hosted by Carol of Bluesky at Home.

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

Carol has pulled together 11 bloggers to share ideas for Thanksgiving to help Celebrate the Holiday.

If you are coming over from White Lilac Farmhouse, welcome! I can’t wait to try her pumpkin bread recipe! Pumpkin bread is my favorite, not only is it delicious, but it makes the house smell amazing!

In the Northwoods of Wisconsin where I live Fall is a beautiful time of year. The trees turn every color of majestic red, orange and yellow making the drives down our forest lined roads spectacular.

Docks are coming out of our lakes and the cranberry farms are ready for harvest.

Kristin White Arrows Home in the Cranberries

This time of year we are shifting to eating indoors for all our meals and planning ahead for Thanksgiving to come.

I’m in a new stage of life with three of my five kids now out of the house. Two working and one in college. Thanksgiving is starting to look different as I adjust to the possibility of not having them all home for the holiday anymore. It’s been so encouraging to talk to so many moms already in this next phase and hear their mom wisdom.

One of my favorite things to do as a family is gather around the table so I love taking time to make it beautiful and special and I’m already thinking about how I want to set my table for Fall and for Thanksgiving. It’s a simple way to show love to my family as we gather.

Today I’m sharing 7 Thanksgiving Dinner Place Setting Options that I may use throughout the week and on the day.

Thanksgiving Table DIYs

I’ve gathered together some elements of the pacesetting to see how they look together:

  • placemats
  • chargers
  • plates
  • napkins
  • glassware

The next step will be deciding on silverware, if I want to use a table cloth and the accessories, like gravy boats and cranberry relish bowls. I’ll also work on ideas for name cards to place at each person’s spot.

Here are seven mix and match place settings as I begin this first stage of planning.

Option 1

What I love about this one is the styling of the napkin knotted over the plates. The napkin is actually a dish towel. I often buy dish towels to use as napkins. Their size is good for a big meal like dinner and there are often patterns that I love.

I also love the galvanized charger and the bread plate. The bread plate is a restaurant ware pattern I fell in love with because it reminds me of Hudson Bay stripes.

Hudson Bay striped blankets and patterns are something I love using throughout our rustic cabin.

Shop Favorite Chargers

Option 2

One of the things I’m dreaming up is a storage space for all my dishes, a dish pantry, where I can have all my dishes on shelves and see them clearly. This will make it easy to remember what I have and “shop” my inventory.

I have two areas of my house that I’m thinking of converting to this use. One would be my front hall walk in closet across from the kitchen. Right now it holds our cleaning supplies and my big appliances I don’t use all the time like my crock pot and air fryer.

If I go with this option I would need to add more shelving and move the cleaning supplies somewhere else. The nice part is it would be close to the kitchen and dining room.

Option 3

What I love about this option is the amber goblet and styling the napkin popping out of it. The fun thing about mixing and matching and playing around with it ahead of time, is I could use this glassware/napkin option with any of the place settings.

Everything works well together in color and patterns so can all be interchanged.

When I set the table I will use a goblet like this one for water and then have wine glasses at each grown ups’ place setting too.

The second option for my dish pantry is my laundry room. That’s where I store most of it now, on the counter and in the cupboards. But if I go with this space I would want to take out the cupboards and put in shelving.

Of the two options, this seems like a longer, harder and more expensive option. Keep following along to see where this idea takes me. I love having a vision in my head and then seeing how it comes to life!

Want to get daily encouragement? SUBSCRIBE HERE so you don’t miss any posts!

Shop Favorite Napkins

Option 4

In this one I use a new set of placemats I just got from Hobby Lobby. I love the plaid! I’ve been using it on our little breakfast table so far this season.

I’m in love with this dish stack option too. It mixes antique dishes with newer ones. Another dose of plaid in the middle plate from some dishes I got a Pier One a few years ago.

Copper is another thing I love to add in Fall so using my copper mule glasses for water at the table is a fun idea. I also found mini mule mugs at Hobby Lobby, but have seen them at my local Walmart too. Each pacesetting could have its own cranberry relish in the mini mule glasses. I found the mini wooden spoons at Hobby Lobby.

Shop Favorite Placemats

Option 5

Collecting dishes is one of my favorite hobbies, hence the need for a dish pantry! I’m drawn to the different patterns and colors. Sometimes I will just buy the dinner plates or just the dessert plates. Sometimes I’ll just buy one plate and use it mix and matched around the table.

It’s also fun to have individual dishes to use as platters. You can make a quick cake stand by turning a goblet upside down and setting a plate on top.

I also love the napkin in this option. Often if I don’t have a napkin I’m wanting to use at the table I will simply buy fabric I love and make my own napkins. I’ve also used bandanas before as well.

Option 6

The way the orange napkin looks with the bark napkin ring is my favorite napkin option so far. and I love the idea of using my mini restaurant ware pitcher collection to give each pacesetting it’s own gravy dispenser.

Antique goblets are another beautiful way to mix new and old onto the table too. I love the cranberry color of this pattern.

Option 7

My favorite part of this pacesetting is the little breadboard. It would be the perfect way to start Thanksgiving settled at the table before grabbing their turkey and other Thanksgiving staples off the buffet.

The mini board could be used as a charcuterie with some cheese and crackers. It could be used for the new butter board trend. It could even be used as their name card.

This place setting is another one where I used a dish towel as a napkin layering it on top of the plate. My antique place is a perfect match for it’s Fall colors of browns, greens and yellows.

The cork placemat is something I use often throughout the year on my table. I have them in several patterns and love them because, not only are they beautiful, they are easy to wipe off and clean after each meal.

Now will be the hardest part, deciding which place setting I want to use. But the great part is, the ones I don’t use for the actual Thanksgiving meal, I’ll use throughout the rest of the week.

But it will all come together like one of my tables from past Thanksgivings.

Rustic Decor, Antique, Pier One Fox, Fall Decor, Autumn Decor, Thanksgiving Decor, Thanksgiving Table, Thanksgiving Tablescape, Placesetting, Antler Decor, Plaid Dishes

Welcome to The Northwoods of Wisconsin, the land of woods and lakes. It’s the perfect Summer getaway spot and I’m so lucky to live here every day. We spend Summer days on our dock and on the boat soaking up the Sunshine.

How to style a Sunroom

Our sunroom has gone through many iterations. When we first bought our cabin the sunroom was a screened in porch. When it wasn’t full of snow, it was full of pollen and we rarely used it. After a few years we decided to take the screens out and add in windows and baseboard heating so we could use the space more throughout the year.

We used it as a sitting room, but didn’t end up sitting out there as often as we thought we would. I changed up what furniture was out there a few times. I added games. I added a record player with music. But none of my attempts got the space to where I wanted it.

A few weeks ago I got an idea and Brian liked it so much he started to move the furniture right away.

I suggested that we move the dining room out into the sunroom, at least for Summer time. In the dining room after the table moved to the sunroom, we’d set up a gathering area of four chairs.

For decor out on the porch I’m giving it patriotic style for the Summer. I love using red, white and blue all Summer long from Memorial to Labor Day here at the lake. See more of my patriotic style IN THIS POST.

Vintage Patriotic Thermos in Vintage Royal Crown Soda Crate

I found a big 48 star Reliance American flag at a local antique shop and hung that on the log wall. It took seconds to make a big impact.

The paddle on the wall was an old one I painted along with some girlfriends for a fun craft day. READ MORE HERE.

At the table I used my red and blue plaid camp blanket as a table throw.

My dishes are the perfect Summer addition, a mix of blue and white patterns in The dishes are melamine, and the lightweight, durable plates and bowls work well if we eat inside in the sunroom or take the meal out onto the deck.

Our deck is just outside the sunroom, so it works well to extend the eating area when we have a large crowd.

I used my red and white napkins inside the nautical rope napkin rings I made by wrapping rope around rings and securing with hot glue. They took minutes to make and gave me exactly the look I wanted. I found all the supplies at Hobby Lobby.

Blue and White Dishes

For a centerpiece I used a drink carrier full of vintage Pop bottles. It works great to add a flag inside each bottle. White daisies or red geraniums look perfect too.

I’m still trying to decide on a rug for the space, but until then I added felt circles to the bottoms of the chairs to make it easy to scoot back and forth from the table on the wood floor.

Thanks so much for stopping by! I’ve been so excited to share my sunroom transformation with you! We have been loving it and having dinner out there every night! Stay tuned in The Summer of Sunshine series as I share more ways to decorate your Summer table next week with easy ideas for every day of the week.

I’m so excited to be joining this fun Easter Brunch Menu Hop hosted by my friend Pasha is Home. There are six of us that have come together to share ideas for your Holiday celebration. You can find links to all the posts below.

There are recipes for deserts, main dishes and appetizers. I’m sharing a special Easter cocktail.

If you are coming over from Open Doors Open Hearts didn’t you love Aliya’s recipe for The Best Lemon Ricotta Cookie with Sourdough Discard.

Welcome to our home in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Depending on when Easter falls each year, we could still have lots of snow on the ground. Or even if our snow is gone, we could get cold temps and flurries. Easter dresses and egg hunts usually require coats and hats.

Here’s a photo of our cabin during our short Spring season a bit after Easter time.

Easter Brunch Drink

There are several drinks that pair perfectly with Easter Brunch. Drinks that are traditionally drunk in the morning and are crowd pleasers.

  • The Screwdriver
  • Mimosa
  • The Bloody Mary

There are also some fun and creative drinks that could be fun to add to a Spring Celebration. Click to see more details.

I thought it would be fun to take a twist on The Bloody Mary that would be the perfect addition to the menu.

The Bunny Mary

A few things intrigued me about this drink when I first heard/saw the idea on Pinterest. Number One- It looks so beautiful with a springy, gardeny vibe adorned with all the veggies.

Number Two- The carrot juice makes it sweeter than the tomato juice of the Bloody Mary. But the addition of all the veggies makes it feel healthier than a regular cocktail.

Number Three- The idea and name is just plain cute!

If you would like you can add vodka to the drinks or you can leave them non alcoholic. I like to always use local ingredients when I can and that includes liquor from our distillery here in town.

My vintage relish tray gets filled up with lots of fresh veggies. Everyone can snack on them as they make their drink or build their own garnish skewer.

I love this relish tray because the glass tray comes out of the silver holder to make washing easy.

A fun option to dress up the drinks even more is to add a “salted” rim. I used one of the ingredients, Old Bay Seasoning as the rim salter.

I used two low bowls, one with the Old Bay Seasoning and one with some of the carrot juice to easily top the glasses. First, I dipped the rim into the juice, then into the seasoning, just like you would do a margarita.

Then I filled the glasses with ice and poured in the Bunny Marys and garnished with a celery stalk.

It’s a refreshing addition to breakfast or anytime of the day, perfect for Spring.

I like to set up a self serve station so while I finish getting the Easter meal prepared everyone can make or pour their own drinks and enjoy snacks. I can’t wait to try some of the other sides and appetizers linked below.

The Recipe

The following ingredients can be combined in a pitcher to make a large batch.

  • 32 oz. carrot juice
  • 8 oz. vodka
  • 3 tsp Old Bay Seasoning
  • 2 tsp dill
  • 3 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp ground ginger
  • 2 tsp horseradish
  • 3 tsp hot sauce
  • 4 dashes of Worcestershire
  • Juice of one lemon
  • 2 tsp black pepper

Here are several tips for taking time to savor the Christmas Season this year and always bringing more meaning and memories into your family and home.

If you are like me, sometimes in the middle of December I start to feel like I’m rushing and not relishing the specialness the Holidays bring. This year I’m making some changes to make things easier, slower and more meaningful.

Add in Peace

  • Light Holiday scented candles. Some of my favorites are from Antique Candle Company.
  • Play peaceful Christmas music. I love all kinds of Christmas music. I shared some of my favorite playlists IN THIS POST. But sometimes, I love to just play instrumental, calming songs, like from THIS ALBUM, to help me slow down and relax.
  • Turn the overhead lights on and just keep the Christmas tree lights, candles and lamps on.

Make Traditions with Yourself

I’m an extroverted introvert. I love social events, but refuel by having time to myself at home. So many things can be group activities during the Holidays, it’s important for me to carve out time just for me.

To help do that I plan activities like wrapping gifts for a morning by myself. I’ll make a special coffee and put on a few Hallmark Christmas movies.

Pick a Signature Cookie

If you are like me I have a Pinterest Christmas Cookie board FULL of yummy ideas and cute treats. But I don’t have time to bake all these cookies and the idea of a full day of baking sounds fun in the planning, but I never can fit it in.

Choose one cookie recipe to be your signature cookie. It’s the one you can be known for, the one you take to the exchanges, the office party and drop at your neighbors door.

Set the Table

It takes just minutes to set the table making your meal time even more special. Here are some ways to slow down and help it happen in our busy days.

  • Choose one day a week when everyone can be home for dinner and set the table differently each week of the Season.
  • Let a different family member set the table, each time doing it in their own style.
  • Leave the tablecloth, placemats and centerpieces on the table all season and then just add the dishes, glasses and silverware when it’s time to eat. This saves some time and looks beautiful all day long.

Use the Good Stuff

I am a big believer in using what you have, even Grandma’s good china, silver and crystal. If pieces stay packed away, they never get a chance to bring you lots of joy. It’s worth the possible break or loss to enjoy them and make new memories.

  • When you hand wash special pieces use the time to reflect and pray thanks for the person who gifted them or passed them down to you. Think about special memories together.
  • I change just two words in my thoughts to make a chore feel like a blessing, “have to” turns into “get to”. Hand washing may seem like extra work, but when your mindset changes to how lucky you are to have these heirlooms it becomes special.

One of the greatest gifts I ever got was from my Godfather who gifted me a piece of Spode Christmas Tree china each Christmas. After college when I had my first apartment I also had beautiful Christmas dishes and serving pieces to entertain with over the Holidays.

I shared about this tradition and some favorite options for gifting IN THIS POST.

Plan Ahead

There are things I wish I had figured out when my kids were younger that would have made things easier on me. Somehow traditions celebrated, like St. Nick, would always seem to sneak up on me.

Christmas Presents

Keeping a tradition simple can take the pressure off. Here are just a few traditions I love and can easily plan ahead for that keep my family in excited anticipation.

  • The Friday after Thanksgiving we do a Tree Trimming Evening. Each kid (young or old) has a new wrapped ornament under the tree. Have a sharpie close by to write the year on the back or bottom before hanging up. My kids love going through the ornaments and remembering what made it special that year. Lots of laughs, smiles and stories get told while decorating.
  • We enjoy the Feast of Seven Fishes for our Tree Trimming, but many families enjoy for it’s traditional time of Christmas Eve.
  • Give a new Christmas book for St. Nickolas Day.
  • Schedule a drive to look at Christmas lights. Give everyone a tumbler of hot chocolate to go.
  • The matching PJs phenomenon is not new, I’ve been wearing matching family jammies is 1976! Every Christmas Eve we all unwrap one gift, everyone knows its the new pajamas, but we are just as excited as if it was a surprise.

Bedtime Routine

When there are lots of things on the to do list and lots of concerts, parties and movies to watch our nights can get late. It’s important to make sure we get enough sleep.

The best way to help insure that is to have a bedtime routine that we look forward to and helps us calm down.

For my kids, I always read to them at bedtime and we looked forward to it. Never once did they argue about bedtime because they couldn’t wait to hear the stories and see what happened next in a favorite novel.

advent tradition sleeps til christmas bedtime story

Christmas makes a special time for reading because there are books I pull out just at this time of year. So we get to reread favorites and enjoy new ones.

An Advent reading each morning to quietly start my day is essential. This year I am reading The Everlasting Light from She Reads Truth. I gave a copy to each of my older girls and copies of the He Reads Truth version to my boys. I had them wrapped and gifted them to them the morning after Thanksgiving. They were so excited to all be reading the same thing. With a few of mine off at college it’s a fun way to stay connected over the Advent season!

I hope this Christmas Season brings you more peace than ever before and memories and blessings to hold dear all year long!
