In 2013, we made the exciting decision to move to Camp Paradise, our lake house, full time. We became the second owners of a charming full log cabin located in the serene Northwoods of Wisconsin. The original owners had designed and built it as a vacation retreat, and we were thrilled to continue its legacy.

Log Cabin

In the early years while vacationing at Camp Paradise, our five kids would all pile into the bunk room to sleep. Those were some of the most precious moments—full of laughter, stories, and memories. I still fondly recall sitting in the rocking chair in the corner, reading to them long into the night as they snuggled into their cozy, camp-striped blankets before drifting off to sleep.

When we moved North permanently, our kids were also growing up and wanting more space to themselves, so the two older kids moved to the two available rooms upstairs.

You can read more about our decision to move in this post.

The kids were spreading out into the house and more guests were starting to come and visit.

There’s an often said phrase around our area, that you will never know how many friends you have until you own a lake home. We loved having friends and family come visit and were always extra excited when grandparents would start coming for longer stays as they retired.

We started dreaming about having a designated space for guests as well as more room for our kids as they grew.

As often happens with Brian and me, a little spark of an idea becomes fun to plan. Each week we have a weekly date night and our conversations turn to dreams. Our guest room idea blossomed into a full guest house.

See how we keep date night possible and a priority in this post.

Why Build a Guest House?

We envisioned a guest house that would offer:

  • Privacy for Guests: A place where guests could enjoy their own space while still being close enough to the main cabin to share meals and activities.
  • Extra Room for Gatherings: We wanted to have an extra space that would provide a gathering area near the guest rooms.
  • Aesthetic Harmony: We wanted the guest house to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings and the main cabin’s rustic aesthetic, so it would feel like a true extension of our home.

We also made a list of all the things we wished our main house had space for:

  • extra garage space as our kids all started driving
  • workout room
  • designated guest room that can stay clean and ready
  • extra bedrooms for older kids

Then I started sketching, searching the Internet and Pinterest for ideas inside and out.

Step 1: Planning and Design

The first step in building our guest house was determining the size, layout, and functionality of the space. We wanted something cozy yet functional, and ideally, it would not only serve as a place for sleeping and the sitting area, but also laundry rooms and bathrooms. We also officially added more garage space and a workout room on the dream list.

Here’s how we approached the design:

  • Size and Layout: We decided on a two story cabin with living space above and garages below, a style that would fit within the existing footprint of our property. There would be a simple wet bar, a comfy living area, two full bathroom rooms upstairs, and cozy bedrooms seemed like the perfect balance.
  • Material Choices: To maintain the rustic charm of the main cabin, we chose half log siding (even though our main house is full log) and natural stone accents for the exterior. So the look is the same. Lots of windows to let in natural light offer beautiful views of the surrounding nature. We included three dormers to coordinate with the two on the main cabin.

I took my sketch to a local designer and had them draw out the floor plan.

Step 2: Building the Guest House

Once we had a clear vision and design, it was time to begin construction. We hired a contractor, but we were still very hands-on with the process.

  • Foundation and Framing: The foundation was the first step, and because we’re located in an area with cold winters, we went with a slab foundation that would keep the building insulated and secure. Once that was in place, the framing went up quickly.
  • Interior Work: Inside, we kept things simple and added the cozy with our decor and rustic cabinetry for the wet bar and bathrooms. I knew I wanted plaid carpet going up the stairs and in the main living area.

Step 3: Furnishing the Guest House

Once the structure was built, it was time to make it feel like home. We wanted the guest house to feel both stylish and comfortable, with all the little touches that make a space inviting. Here’s what we did:

  • Rustic Furniture: We went for a blend of vintage and rustic pieces—think wooden bed frames, a reclaimed wood table for puzzles and games, and plush, soft seating that would keep guests relaxed and comfortable.
  • Cozy Bedding and Textiles: Soft bedding with down comforters, wool throws, and plenty of pillows made the bedrooms feel like a cozy retreat. We want guests to feel like they are staying in a special place, with plenty of blankets to snuggle under.
  • Decor: The decor incorporates vintage elements like old paddles and snow shoes, natural elements like a wood backsplash, artwork, and lamps to add a warm light in the mornings and evenings. We also include little touches like fresh flowers or potted plants to bring the outdoors in when people come to stay.

Step 4: Making It Functional for Guests

While aesthetics were important, we also wanted to ensure the guest house was fully functional. Here are some features we incorporated:

  • Wet Bar: We included a small wet bar with a mini fridge, sink, and microwave so guests could feel self-sufficient, but would still come to the main house for meals. A kuerig and self serve coffee station is on the bar to enjoy morning coffee or cozy drinks anytime.
  • Bathrooms: The guest house has a two full bathrooms, one with a walk-in shower, and one with a shower tub that blend comfort with style.
  • Wi-Fi and Technology: We ensured that there was reliable Wi-Fi throughout the guest house as well as a television in the sitting area.

Step 5: The Finishing Touches

Finally, it was time for the finishing touches. From hanging artwork to installing lighting, we took extra care to make sure the space felt welcoming and lived-in. We filled the shelves with books, puzzles and games for guests to enjoy.

Create a Gallery Wall From a Thrift Store Book
Bathroom Hutch with Towels, Lake House

For the lower level, we split the garages into a double garage and a single divided by a little porch and entry way to the upstairs.

The single garage we fit out for our workout room. Our family loves to workout together and its one of the most used spaces.

Adding a glass garage door on the workout room was one of the best decisions as it not only lets in a lot of natural light, but gives extra energy to workouts being able to see out. On great weather days we open the door up and use the inside space and the driveway.

Home Gym Workout Room Spin Bike

We also plumbed this space for a possible future kitchen in case we ever need a wheelchair accessible living area in the future. We would be able to make this workout space living space.

Step 6: Welcoming Our First Guests

After months of hard work, we were thrilled to finally welcome our first guests to the space. It was everything we had dreamed of—cozy, functional, and a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern convenience. Our friends and family loved it, and it’s quickly become a favorite getaway spot.

Tips for Building Your Own Guest House

If you’re considering building your own guest house or cabin retreat, here are a few tips based on our experience:

  • Plan for Functionality: Think about the flow of the space and what your guests will need. Will they need a full kitchen, or just a small kitchenette? Will they come for a weekend stay or an extended vacation?
  • Sustainability is Key: Consider using eco-friendly materials and renewable energy sources to make your guest house more sustainable.
  • Stay True to Your Style: Whether you’re going for rustic, modern, or minimalist, make sure the guest house reflects your personal style and complements the main house and surrounding nature.
  • Budget for Unexpected Costs: Construction always comes with surprises, so be sure to leave some room in your budget for unexpected expenses.
Guest House

Final Thoughts

Building a guest house at our cabin has been one of the most rewarding projects we’ve undertaken. It’s not only provided us with more space to host family and friends, but it’s also given us a tranquil retreat that blends perfectly with the surrounding nature. Whether you’re dreaming of a cozy getaway or simply want more space for guests, a guest house is a fantastic addition that can transform your home.

We know many more memories are ahead for this beautiful space.

Cabin in Spring

We live on the shores of a gin clear lake in the Northwoods of Wisconsin where hundreds of lakes provide recreation opportunities and quiet, peaceful moments.

Sunset on the Dock

Visitors come from all over to vacation here and even though we live here full time, we never take the blessing of this place for granted.

When you are at the lake it is like time stands still, you can have no agenda, get lost in your activity or book or take a nap.

You can also read some of my previous posts:

This month I’m sharing my vintage clock collection which brings me back to that lake time thought.

Most of my old clocks don’t work anymore or I haven’t wound them up.

They are frozen in time.

So I say they are on lake time.

Vintage Clocks

I love to style these old clocks all around my house.

One of the best things about beginning to collect old clocks is that they can be found so inexpensively.

I also run across them often, but not so often that it doesn’t feel like a treasure hunt.

Vintage desk decor, lamp, clock and typewriter

One of my favorite things about antique and vintage items is wondering what their story is.

Who did these clocks belong to?

Where did they keep them?

What was happening in their life when the clock stopped on the time that is on the face now?

With different shapes and sizes of clocks I can style them into bookcases, place them on nightstands, on desks or end tables.

They look great anywhere!

Soda Crate Shelf, Succulents

Pocket Watches

I also have a little milk glass bowl full of pocket watches that I love.

This month I’m sharing my cake stands and cake carriers.

Come Over For Cake

I love sharing decorating ideas and vintage decor, but my true passion is to share encouragement, especially helping you find more direction and connection in your life.

My cabin home is just the backdrop for the messages I pass on that are on my mind and from my heart.

My beautiful cake plates and cake carriers serve more purpose than just pretty accents, they serve a way to make a sweet connection.

  • Invite a friend over for a slice of cake and cup of tea.
  • Message a neighbor to stop over for a slice.
  • Take along a coffee cake to work on a Monday morning to add some sunshine.
  • Drop off a cake to someone needing a little extra joy.

Use Your Heirlooms to Entertain

Entertaining is the perfect time to use your pretty pieces whether you have just begun collecting or you have pieces that have been passed down in your family.

My Grandma Libby passed down the start of my mix matched tea cup collection and my cute lea pot too.

The embroidered napkins were my Grandma Patty’s and my mom passed them down to me.

Inviting someone over can be simple and easy, a no pressure way to show hospitality.

Maybe baking is one of your favorite hobbies and you love having someone to bake for, but if you don’t just stop and pick something up from a local bakery.

This snickerdoodle cake was one of many beautiful choices at our local Walmart.

Your gathering, whether big or small, one friend or a few can be pulled together in minutes.

  • Pull out your pretty plates, tea cups, forks and napkins.
  • Put your cake on a cake stand.
  • Then just add your smile as you welcome friends in to relax and enjoy catching up or getting to know each other better.

When I was visiting my daughter in Germany, her au pair family kept the tea pot warm on the table with one of these nifty little ceramic stands with a tea light candle inside.

Picking up mismatched tea cups and plates is a fun way to build a collection at an affordable price.

Collections are fun to gather too when you are able to pick up one new piece on each outing because you find these items often and usually they are only a few dollars.

In my shop we have a special room, our dish bar, where you can shop hundreds of dishes to collect!

Vintage Dishes to Mix and Match

Display Your Collections

There are pretty ways to keep the tea cups and plates on display all the time or you can keep them stored away, bringing them out as needed.

Vintage Tea Cup Card Holder

I do a bit of both, some are out and around my house and some are stored in my dish closet.

My dish closet was one of my favorite projects, where I did some switching around and turned my cleaning and coat closet into my dish pantry.

Dish Pantry

Vintage Cake Plates

Like the plates and tea cups, cake plates can also often be found inexpensively and in most shops.

A walk through the aisles of your local Good Will may send you home with a pretty one.

I’ve had my glass collection for years, purchasing my first small one in high school.

Having cake stands in different sizes and heights lets me use them in so many ways.

Even everyday occasions like a Saturday morning of pancakes calls for using a cake stand to stack them on.

You can elevate the usual to a memory making moment, by simply pulling in a pretty vintage piece like a cake stand.

It’s simple and it’s special.

Shop Cake Stands

Vintage Cake Carriers

When a cake carrier catches my eye, it may make it’s way home with me too.

This red hand painted piece is simply a cake cover that I add to the top of one of my cake stands to help the cake stay fresh longer.

Using a cake cover can also add a layer of surprise as you keep your treat covered until serving.

When you want to take your cake to share, carrying it in a vintage carrier is such an easy way to give it a more special appearance, an extra “no need to say it in words” way to communicate that you hope your sharing brings joy.

A bunch of sunflowers I picked up at the grocery store gave it the perfect pop of Autumn gold.

Golds and oranges together are a favorite pairing this time of year.

A gingham pumpkin from Dollar Tree and a thrifted plaid little box finalize the seasonal vignette on the carved bear in our entryway.

Nutcracker and Picks

Lantern

I collect red lanterns and have them styled in spots all around my house.

This style lantern though I did not have and loved the look when I saw it sitting on an antique shop shelf.

Vintage Picnic Basket and blanket

It seems to me like a mix between the lanterns I collect and the flashlights I also collect so I couldn’t pass it up.

Vintage Flashlights Nancy Drew Hardy Boys

Barrel Lamp

Lamp light is an essential element in my home.

As soon as dusk arrives, the overhead lights go off and the lamps come on.

It makes the cabin instantly cozier and peaceful.

When I was at one of the weekly Summer flea markets in our area this Summer I found this precious barrel lamp and knew it would be perfect in this little corner of our great room by the bar.

Matches in Footed Dish

Two fun finds come together with this green glass footed dish and a collected grouping of vintage match books.

Nostalgic of the good ole days when restaurants, hotels and other establishments passed out matchbooks with their logos and information on them.

I keep them next to a candle on the coffee table in our great room.

Patterson Tobacco Tin

My maiden name is Patterson so this Patterson tobacco tin was always a must have for me.

It works in my decor all year round with it’s woven wicker looking exterior, but in the Fall it’s especially pretty when I like items that look natural.

I found some history in a listing for a tin on Etsy.

“R. A. Patterson Tobacco Co. was founded in 1856 in Richmond, Virginia and was purchased in 1905 by the American Tobacco Co. This is why our tobacco tin has “Patterson’s Seal Cut Plug” and “It’s the Quality” on top of it, and their Seal logo on the front, but under the logo in fine print it says “The American Tobacco Company, Successor.”

Our lunch box styled tobacco tin was manufactured somewhere between 1905-1930 when tobacco was marketed in tins that could be used as lunch boxes after the tobacco was gone.”

Pretzel Tins

Something about pretzels and Fall just come together perfectly for me.

Maybe it’s the German in me.

The celebration of Oktoberfest?

I keep my pretzel tins out all year, but showcase them during Autumn.

fall Table- Pretzel tins

Beer Tappers

Old wooden beer tappers are beautiful finds.

Again, maybe I’m drawn to them in this season with the thought of Oktoberfest?

Grouping them together makes them a beautiful conversation piece on the edge of our bar.

Here’s another view of our bar in Fall.

THRIFTING WITH THE GALS

How fun it is to share ideas with you each month for our Thrifting with the Gals Blog Hop.

Each of the Thrifting Gals share from where they live across the country, in Vermont and Maine, North Carolina and Florida. You can search our hashtag #thriftingwiththegals to follow the series.

This blog hop gives us a chance to share how we are decorating with our finds in our own homes. There’s usually some great upcycling projects too. Thanks so much to Ann Dabbling & Decorating for getting this fun group started years ago.

If you are coming over from my friend Robyn’s Florida home, welcome to my lakeside log cabin home in Wisconsin.

Robyn’s blog Robyn’s French Nest is full of beautiful decor inspiration like her post today about primitive finds for Fall decor.

I live in a small town about three hours north of Madison, just below the UP of Michigan known as The Northwoods.

Spring Cabin

Our family moved up to the area almost ten years ago from the town of Fond du Lac, about three hours away from Minocqua, between Madison and Milwaukee.

Near Fond du Lac is a quaint little college town, Ripon. My in-laws live nearby in Green Lake and my sister-in-law and I loved to run into Ripon to shop the cute antique shops.

In the past three years their downtown has begun to thrive and many new amazing stores have been added.

I love to go down there when I get a chance not only to shop, but see the shop owners who have become friends.

Soul Patina

I first met Kelly through a mutual friend years ago and then as I started to shop the barn sale she held right in the barn of her farmhouse.

It was so exciting when her dream of opening her own shop came true.

I love stopping in at Soul Patina and shopping all the preppy, colorful products and decor.

I’m so excited about what I brought home from Soul Patina! I collect Skotch Kohler and have never seen any of these before!! How cute is this cooler!

You will love following Soul Patina on Instagram! You will be swooning over her squares. And she has an online store too!

Back Porch Gatherings

Another great shop in downtown Ripon is Back Porch Gatherings. They are always doing something architecturally inside their shop that is so inspiring, like a building a greenhouse inside the shop.

Hart Mercantile

Just across the street from Back Porch Gatherings is Hart Mercantile. I love the way Dawn displays her shelves of treasures and styles her products. She carries lots of gorgeous barware, brass, candles and more.

Salvage

Just down from Hart Mercantile, Back Porch Gatherings has a Salvage shop. It’s overflow pieces and some storage space for them, but styled for great shopping. You can find great pieces to be creative with.

Patina Vie

I don’t have any Patina Vie photos from my last visit, but here are some gorgeous ones from a Holiday season a few years back.

Outside Patina Vie is a cute airstream trailer serving ice cream and snacks.

Gent’s

A new store just opened since I was there last and I LOVE it.

It’s such a great aesthetic. The owner thought of every little detail to create an unforgettable shopping experience.

The giant flags in the windows and the disco ball in the entry made for a stunning welcome.

He involved all the senses. Sense of smell, taste (offered us a beer out of a vintage cooler) and had music playing.

In the back of Gent’s is a super cool barber shop.

I brought home from Gent’s this beautiful cocktail pitcher.

Thanks for coming along for the fun in Ripon, Wisconsin!

Next up, you are headed to North Carolina and my friend Rachel’s special farmhouse home where she blogs at The Pond’s Farmhouse.

She has gorgeous inspiration for finding thrifted pieces to decorate for Fall.

If you are coming over from my friend Robyn’s Florida home, welcome to Wisconsin! I love visiting Robyn’s blog, Robyn’s French Nest and loved her post this month about how to redecorate shelves in seven easy steps.

Welcome to Camp Paradise

Enjoy some inspiration for decorating with vintage thermos inside and outside your home.

My collection of vintage thermos started years ago. I was always drawn to the plaid pattered ones and then began adding with others as well.

When I started blogging and joined Instagram it was fun to meet people who had similar interests and collections. Mary @itfollowedmehome_vintage asked Stephanie @vintageandprep and me if we’d like to cohost a weekly hashtag called #thermosthursday to let other collectors connect and share.

Years later as the thermos nation has grown, the weekly posting has continued. Mary turned the reins over to me as she and Stephanie stepped back. I asked @campgilmore and @mylilmainecottage to join me as new cohosts to kick things off for the Summer season.

I hope you will play along each week. Don’t worry about your photos, just have fun with it. Enjoy styling a special vignette or just snap a photo to share. Head to Instagram, post it with the hashtag #thermosthursday. I post a reminder each week.

These are some of my favorite ways to use and decorate with thermos.

For the Seasons

Vintage thermos are such fun in the Summer. A Campfire Marshmallow tin, vintage jug and some plaid blankets to stay cozy by the campfire are the perfect treasures to add to the scene!

s'mores, cabin, camp fire, thermos, plaid

As temperatures begin to drop in the Fall, a favorite thermos can hold an instant warm up.

Autumn, Fall Checklist, Thermos, Wood Pile, Vintage Camp Style, Log Cabin

Winter feels even more festive with a few thermos added to the coffee bar.

Spode Christmas Tree, Christmas dishes, Spode, Holiday dishes, coffee cups, Christmas mugs, Coffee Bar, Vintage Thermos
Holiday and Plaid Thermos Vignette in Vintage wood tote

Spring flowers look even brighter in a thermos!

Tulips in Vintage Vase

One of the things people love about vintage thermos, I think, is the nostalgic feeling they give you. They remind you of the container your dad took to work everyday. They remind you of Summer road trips. They remind you of happy days.

Entertaining

I still use so many of my thermos to hold beverages. They are fun to take cold drinks down by the lake.

Keep hot chocolate on a self serve bar during game night.

Hot Chocolate Bar

Thermos work so beautifully as vases.

thermos, beverage cart, cabin, cottage

I think people love collecting thermos is because there are so many different sizes and patterns and colors to keep searching for. It’s a really fun treasure hunt!

Enjoying the Outdoors

This is my idea of fishing! A thermos works great as a wine cooler.

Summer, Fishing, Thermos, Camp stool, minnow bucket, Scotch Cooler
Summer Tablescape

The boathouse takes on extra cuteness with thermos, red lanterns, oars and more vintage goodness.

Cabin with Vintage decor

My favorite places to find vintage thermos are: White Arrows Home- The Shop and other Antique Shops, Vintage Markets, Garage Sales, Flea Markets, Etsy, and Facebook Marketplace.

Home Decor

I keep my thermos above my kitchen cabinets when they aren’t in use in other places.

Log Cabin, Green Cabinets, Vintage Thermos, Cabin Kitchen, Kitchen, Rustic Kitchen, Cottage Kitchen

It’s fun to include thermos in my mantel decor.

free-summer-printable

I don’t have a favorite thermos. Just like my children, I love them all the same!

Porch Decor

One of my favorite places to decorate is my front porch. I often include thermos, jugs and coolers.

Patriotic Porch Decor
Summer decor, front porch, curb appeal, geraniums, cottage, log cabin

I love choosing which thermos to use based on the seasons.

Fall Porch Decor, Vintage Decor, Rustic Decor, Log Cabin, Plaids

My Holiday thermos is a favorite!

White Arrows Home- The Shop

You can always find thermos at my shop. Here’s a sampling of some we have or had in stock.

I hope you will join in for #thermosthursday over on Instagram. You will find a lot of inspiration and meet an amazing group of people, some kindred spirits and make friends! Don’t ever hesitate to ask me if you have questions about how to join in.

And here’s a peek at what new finds have come home with me. When I’m out thrifting I’m always on the hunt for my shop and my home.

I always have my eyes out for old typewriters and clocks! And I love how these pulled together on my loft desk.

Vintage desk decor, lamp, clock and typewriter

The typewriter was found on a little jaunt into Virocqua, Wisconsin with my daughters when we were down at our getaway property in The Driftless Area. Virocqua is a fun little town to spend some time exploring. I especially love stopping into Driftless Artifacts.

The clock I found while on a thrifting adventure to Waupaca, Wisconsin with some girlfriends. We just took a day trip down to explore the shops. I was inspired in Loot and picked up a few fun finds.

The new to me old black typewriter grows my collection. I have a green one that sits on the desk in our living room.

Vintage Green Typewriter

The desk sits next to our old boat turned bookcase.

A sweet little blue typewriter sits on my daughter’s desk in her room.

If you are coming over from my friend Robyn’s Florida home and blog at Robyn’s French NestI bet you are as inspired as I am. I love the way she integrates all her gorgeous finds into her home! She has amazing style. I loved her post today on Yard Sale finds that make a big impact on a small budget.

What do you call home sales where you live? Yard Sales, Garage Sales, Rummage Sales?

Crates

One of my favorite things to look for is a new crate. Soda crates and other old product crates are wonderful to have around for extra storage while keeping it beautiful.

I’m drawn to their graphics and colors. I love that there are so many different ones in many sizes. See THIS POST for more about crates.

Picnic Baskets

So many of the things I love to collect are special because of the nostalgic feelings they bring forth. That’s one of the reasons I’m so interested in picnic baskets. They are reminders of happy times spent with loved ones and friends outside enjoying food and fellowship.

My collection has grown to include many colors and both metal and woven baskets. I even have the basket that was a wedding gift to my parents in 1970.

VIntage Picnic Baskets

Glassware

I love collecting dishes and glassware. This polka dot set is one of my favorite finds.

It’s fun to pull out fun glasses when entertaining.

Vintage Scotch Cooler, Marshmallow tin, thermos and glasses

Trophies

Old trophies add a fun layer to seasonal vignettes. This boat trophy is a great one to put on display for Summer.

McCoy Pottery

Sweet little McCoy pots come in several styles, colors and sizes. It’s one of my collections I want to keep growing. Right now I’m on the hunt for a white one.

Wooden Totes

Like so many of the things I collect, wooden totes are valuable because there are so many ways I can use them in decor and for practical purposes. They come in different shapes and sizes.

At one time time they would have held tools possibly and now they become centerpieces or storage pieces. See THIS POST for more ways I use them.

Antique Tote Decorated for Fall

Biscuit Jars

These classy little wooden canisters are one of my favorite things to find. They can be pricey, so if I find one at a great price I snatch it up right away.

Usually they are just on display in my kitchen, but I sometimes use them as vases. And I do serve my favorite gingersnaps out of them for guests too.

Handkerchiefs

My eyes tend to water so I love keeping a sweet little handkerchief close by. They are usually inexpensive, I find them for around a dollar, so fun to pick up new ones often.

Most were made with love and have some handstiched embroidery. I love that i can give them a new life.

There are also lots of fun ways to diy and decorate with them in your home. I shared some ideas in THIS POST.

Tea Cups

My tea cup collection began with my grandmother. She passed several down to me and I feel in love. I now add to my collection when I find a single cup and saucer in a pattern I like.

Brooches

I love collecting vintage brooches and adding them to my outfits whether they are seasonal, colorful or sparkly.

Books

Usually when I’m out and have the time, I scan through the book shelves or bins of books on the hunt for outdoor, wildlife and forest titles. I’m drawn to the covers, the spins, the colors and the titles.

I display my books on bookshelves and vignettes around my cabin home..

Bottle Openers

When I stumbled upon a tray full of old bottle openers for a dollar each I was smitten. The little metal tools make a fun display all together and are practical too as we can still use them.

Having them in a dish by the bar always stops guests to go through them and check out the details. Many are engraved with company names as they must have been given as promotional items and freebies.

If you are coming over from my gal Robyn’s Robyn’s French Nest aren’t you in awe of her amazing architectural finds and how beautiful they are in her home.

Welcome to Camp Paradise

It’s so fun each month to share one of my biggest passions with you. I’ve been collecting antiques since high school and it’s such a fun hobby. I enjoy doing it on my own or with groups of friends. It’s fun to see my daughters enjoying it with me now too.

I love sharing with you how I style my finds into my home. This mix of old and new helps tell our home’s story with layers of nostalgia for the past while fully living in the memory making moments now.

Summer decor, front porch, curb appeal, geraniums, cottage, log cabin

This is a fun time of year as many of the vintage markets are about to happen and I’m gearing up and getting excited to hunt for my home and for my shop.

Do you know I own an antique shop? It’s worth the visit to Wisconsin to come see White Arrows Home or you can always shop online from anywhere. Our entire store is online.

Here are some of my favorite things to collect and keep my eyes out for as I head toward Summer.

Ice Cream Containers

Last year I started to really notice all the charming old ice cream buckets, tubs, scoops and containers.

They have such great graphics and make amazing accessories to seasonal vignettes or a Summer Ice Cream Social.

When I use a vintage container as a vase, I place a mason jar inside with water to hold the flowers so I don’t damage the container.

Minnow Buckets

Living on a lake minnow buckets are a must have for me and I use them in so many ways. For a previous Thrifting With the Gals post I shared 10 of My Favorite Ways to Use Minnow Buckets.

Summer Porch Decor

Croquet Set

What is more fun than yard games out back on a warm Summer day? This croquet set is so cute on my porch for display, but it’s also used often by my kids to actually play croquet.

If you plan a vacation to Minocqua to come visit my shop, you’ll have to save time for the Swift Creek Croquet Club too. It’s so cute and fun! I took my team from the shop there last year and we had a blast!

Fun Glassware

Collecting vintage dishes is one of my hobbies, so is glassware. I love finding special cups to serve drinks from. These tall red polka dot are fun many times during the year, especially Summer.

How cute is it paired with this stacked snack bowl and a new (vintage styled) Skotch jug. We sell these jugs in my shop HERE.

Summer Porch Decor

Red, White & Blue

Anything patriotic, red/white/blue or star spangled is probably coming home with me! I love pulling these items out in the Summer time from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

It can also be as simple as pulling together some red, white and blue vintage books or adding some flags to a vintage red toy truck.

Wagons

There are so many great vintage items you can add to your garden. My mom’s garden is a perfect example you can see HERE. I love how she used vintage plates for a garden border.

One of my favorite vintage items in my garden is this green wagon. I love planting it by the porch. I saw a red one the other day for a great price at a local shop. I’m thinking about going back to get it!

Waterskis

On the lake vintage water skis are so great in decor inside and outside. I love finding old water skis. I have several pairs in incorporate on the porch, the mantel or hang up inside.

Swimsuits

Old swimsuits are hard to find. My two favorites I found on Etsy and had them delivered right to my doorstep.

They look so cute outside or framed and hanging up in a mudroom.

Coolers

So many of my vintage coolers I still use when I’m entertaining. Others that aren’t in as good of shape I leave stacked for decoration.

Tennis Racquets

I love playing tennis in the Summer with a group of friends. We meet at the courts once a week and it’s great exercise. Old wooden tennis racquets are beautiful hung on the wall or leaning in a corner, even fanned out in a basket.

Nautical Decor

There are so many fun items I’ve found with a boating or nautical them. This nautical flag ice bucket and the sailboat stir stick are perfect examples.
