Winter brings its own unique charm—crisp air, snowy landscapes, and cozy moments spent indoors.

But it also offers a perfect opportunity to step outside your usual routine and try something new.

Whether you’re looking for a fun family activity, a way to spark your creativity, or just want to shake up your winter season, here are 10 creative ideas to make the most of the colder months that are both fun and cozy.

1. Go Ice Skating

Ice skating is a time-honored winter tradition that’s perfect for anyone looking to embrace the chilly season with a little movement.

Whether you choose to glide across an outdoor rink beneath twinkling holiday lights or warm up indoors at a local arena, ice skating offers a unique blend of fun and fitness.

It’s a great way to work out without feeling like you’re exercising—burning calories, strengthening muscles, and improving balance all while enjoying the winter air (or cozy indoor warmth).

backyard hockey, ice skating, northwoods living

Whether you’re a seasoned skater or a complete beginner, it’s an activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels.

Plus, many rinks offer rentals, so you don’t even need to own skates to join in the fun.

So, grab your friends, your family and hit the ice for a memorable winter outing!

2. Build a Snowman (or Snow Sculptures)

When snowflakes start falling, there’s no better way to embrace the season than by heading outside to build a snowman or get creative with snow sculptures.

Gather your family, friends, or even neighbors for an impromptu snowman-building contest, or challenge each other to create imaginative designs like snow animals, castles, or abstract art.

You can find some fun ideas on my Winter Pinterest Board.

Build a Snowman

Building a snowman is more than just rolling snow into big balls—it’s a chance to let your imagination run wild, experimenting with different snow textures, props for eyes, noses, and scarves, and even adding personality to your frosty creations.

If you’re in a place that doesn’t often get snow, it’s a nostalgic way to make the most of the winter weather.

3. Sledding

Sledding is one of those classic winter activities that never loses its charm, no matter how old you get.

The thrill of speeding down a snowy hill with the cold wind in your face and a sense of freedom in your chest is something that stays with you.

Whether you’re using a traditional sled, a plastic toboggan, or even an old-fashioned wooden sled, there’s nothing quite like the adrenaline rush of the descent.

Vintage Sled, Vintage Blankets, Buffalo Plaid, Cabin

And it’s not just about the ride itself; sledding is also about the laughter, the occasional tumble, and the pure joy of being outdoors in the winter.

Find a hill with a nice, gentle slope for the kids or go for a more daring incline if you’re after a more adventurous experience.

It’s a simple activity that’s easy to do with family or friends, and the best part is that the fun never seems to end—you’ll be racing up the hill just to go down again and again!

4. Hot Cocoa Bar

After a day spent braving the cold, there’s nothing better than warming up with a cup of hot cocoa.

But why settle for a plain mug of cocoa when you can set up an entire hot chocolate bar at home?

Create your own winter wonderland of toppings and mix-ins, like whipped cream, colorful marshmallows, crushed peppermint, chocolate shavings, or even a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg.

Hot Chocolate Bar, Log Cabin, Cabin

For a more indulgent experience, add caramel sauce, toffee bits, or mini candy canes for extra flavor.

Set up the bar with various types of hot chocolate—think dark chocolate, white chocolate, or spiced cocoa—for everyone to customize their drink just the way they like it.

It’s the perfect way to spend a cozy evening indoors with loved ones, sipping on sweet treats while you watch a holiday movie, read a book, or just chat by the fire.

This activity is also great for entertaining guests, making it a festive and interactive way to warm up during the colder months.

5. Winter Hiking or Snowshoeing

Winter hiking or snowshoeing offers a peaceful and serene way to explore nature during the colder months.

While many people think of hiking as a spring or summer activity, winter transforms the outdoors into a breathtaking landscape of quiet beauty.

If you’ve never tried snowshoeing before, it’s an easy-to-learn activity that allows you to walk on snow-covered trails without sinking into the powder, making it ideal for areas with deep snow.

Snowshoes

For those who prefer a more traditional hike, many trails are still accessible in winter, providing a crisp, calm atmosphere and fewer crowds.

Winter hiking offers a chance to spot wildlife in its natural habitat, experience the quiet stillness of a snowy forest, and enjoy the beauty of frost-covered trees or frozen lakes.

Plus, the cold air can be invigorating, making you feel like you’re truly connected to the outdoors.

Layer up, grab your boots or snowshoes, and discover the winter wonderland that’s waiting just outside your door.

6. Take a Winter Photography Walk

Winter landscapes are stunning and can offer beautiful photo opportunities. Bundle up, take your camera or phone, explore your surroundings while documenting the beauty of the season.

Try making it a challenge with family or friends inviting them to join in and share their favorite winter moments.

Winter Photography

You can create daily or weekly prompts, such as “Best Snowy Landscape,” “Coziest Winter Setup,” or “Funniest Winter Moment.”

Have everyone share their pics online or in a group chat.

7. Bake Treats

Winter is the ultimate time to indulge in baking, whether you’re a seasoned pro in the kitchen or just getting started.

The chilly weather and cozy atmosphere of your kitchen make it the perfect setting for whipping up some sweet or savory treats.

Gingerbread cookies, spiced cakes, and hearty pies are staples, but you can also experiment with new recipes, like hot cocoa brownies or cinnamon rolls.

The aroma of freshly baked goods filling the house is enough to make anyone feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Pretzel Sea Salt Cookies

Baking is not only a comforting solo activity, but it’s also a wonderful way to spend time with family or friends.

Share your delicious creations with neighbors, or deliver a festive batch of cookies to loved ones as a thoughtful gift. Stop in White Arrows the Shop to find the perfect plate for gifting on from our Dish Bar.

If you prefer, you can keep your treats all to yourself to savor throughout the season—just be sure to have a cup of hot cocoa or coffee on hand to enjoy with them!

8. Go Skiing or Snowboarding

Downhill skiing is one of my favorite activities!

If you live near a ski resort—or if you’re planning a winter getaway—skiing or snowboarding is one of the most thrilling ways to experience the winter season.

Whether you’re a seasoned expert carving down the slopes or a beginner eager to learn, these high-energy sports offer an incredible way to make the most of the winter months.

Skiing and snowboarding aren’t just about the sport itself—they’re also about the scenery.

Picture yourself gliding down a snow-covered mountain with panoramic views of snowcapped peaks and pristine forests.

Skiing in Montana

The adrenaline rush from speeding down the slopes is unmatched, and for those looking to try something new, ski resorts often offer lessons, making it easy for first-timers to get the hang of it.

Whether you’re into powdery runs or thrilling terrain parks, skiing and snowboarding are perfect for creating lasting memories on the mountain.

9. Have a Winter Picnic

Who says picnics are only for the summer?

With a little preparation, a winter picnic can be an unforgettable experience.

Bundle up in cozy layers, pack a thermos of hot soup, and head to a scenic park or even a snowy field for a winter wonderland picnic.

The crisp, cold air makes the experience feel special, and there’s something magical about sitting outdoors with snow gently falling around you.

Picnic with Skotch Kooler

Pack hearty foods that will warm you from the inside out, like stews, sandwiches, or hot baked goods, and don’t forget your favorite hot drinks—whether it’s a thermos of cocoa or mulled cider.

For extra comfort, bring along blankets or insulated cushions to sit on, and be sure to bring a thermos or two for something warm to sip while you relax.

A winter picnic is a peaceful way to embrace the cold, connect with nature, and enjoy a delicious meal with friends or family.

10. Create a Winter Wonderland Indoors

Even if the weather outside is frightful, you can still create a magical atmosphere inside your home.

Turn your living room into a cozy winter wonderland with twinkling fairy lights, paper snowflakes, and winter greenery like pine boughs.

Add some soft throws and pillows to create a warm, inviting space, perfect for curling up with a cup of tea or a good book.

You can also get creative with seasonal decorations like homemade wreaths or candles in wintery scents.

Winter Decor- Hot Chocolate

The key is to embrace the season’s beauty indoors by incorporating textures, colors, and lighting that evoke the magic of winter.

Whether you host friends for a gathering or simply enjoying the ambiance with your family, a cozy winter home can make the colder months feel extra special.

11. Host a Winter Craft Party

A winter craft party is a wonderful way to bring friends and family together during the colder months.

Get creative with activities that fit the season, like making DIY holiday cards, decorating ornaments, or crafting homemade snow globes.

You can even try your hand at knitting scarves or making felt snowflakes.

Whether you’re crafting holiday decor, creating personalized gifts, or just having fun with seasonal projects, it’s the perfect opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones while being productive.

winter-decor-apres-ski-buffalo-plaid

Make sure to set up a cozy space with plenty of supplies, a warm drink station, and some festive music to get everyone into the spirit.

Not only will you leave with a sense of accomplishment, but you’ll also have unique handmade items that will add a personal touch to your home or make thoughtful gifts.

12. Make Homemade Candles with Winter Scents

There’s something so comforting about lighting a candle on a cold winter night, and making your own adds a personal touch to your home decor.

Winter scents like cinnamon, pine, and vanilla evoke cozy memories and can help you transform your space into a relaxing haven.

Creating homemade candles is surprisingly easy and can be a fun, creative project for a solo afternoon or a group activity.

Nautical Candleholder
Nautical Candle Holders

Choose your favorite scent or blend a few to create your own signature fragrance.

You can even add dried herbs, spices, or glitter to make your candles extra special.

If you’re looking for a meaningful holiday gift, homemade candles are an excellent idea—they’re thoughtful, personalized, and always appreciated.

Whether you keep them for yourself or share them with loved ones, DIY candles are a beautiful way to bring warmth to your home.

13. Start a Winter Journal

Winter is the perfect time to slow down, reflect, and capture the essence of the season in a journal. Whether you’re a writer, an artist, or simply someone who enjoys documenting life’s moments, starting a winter journal can be a deeply rewarding experience.

Use the pages to jot down your winter adventures—whether you’re hiking through snowy trails, baking seasonal treats, or enjoying a peaceful evening by the fire.

You can also sketch winter scenes, write down cozy recipes, or capture thoughts and reflections on the season.

Great Day to Start Journaling

A winter journal is a great way to embrace the stillness of the colder months, and it provides a wonderful way to look back on your memories in years to come.

Plus, it’s a perfect way to channel creativity and stay mindful during this quieter time of year.

14. Winter Stargazing

On clear winter nights, the sky is often at its most breathtaking. Bundle up in your warmest clothes and head outside for some winter stargazing.

The crisp, cold air makes the stars appear sharper and brighter, and with the lack of light pollution in some areas, you may be able to spot constellations more easily.

This is the perfect time to observe the wonders of the night sky—whether it’s a meteor shower, the Big Dipper, or the Orion constellation.

Stargazing also gives you a sense of connection to the vastness of the universe and can be a meditative experience.

Night Cabin

Find a quiet, open space with minimal light interference, and spend time marveling at the celestial beauty above.

Winter stargazing is a peaceful, awe-inspiring activity that brings a sense of calm and wonder, perfect for unwinding after a long day.

15. Host a Game Night

When the weather keeps you indoors, a game night can bring everyone together for some fun and laughter.

You can enjoy trivia, charades, or even play classic board games like Monopoly or Scrabble.

Here’s a post with some of our favorite family games.

For a winter twist, you can create your own themed trivia questions, or set up a movie or song guessing game.

Kristin Lenz

Game nights are a great way to connect with loved ones, and they also helps lift your spirits during the colder months.

Make it extra festive by offering winter snacks and cozy drinks, and encourage everyone to wear their comfiest sweaters or even winter pajamas!

16. DIY Hot Toddy or Cocktail Tasting

Winter is the perfect time to experiment with new drinks, especially those that warm you up from the inside out.

Hot toddies, mulled wine, and seasonal cocktails are perfect for cozying up with friends or unwinding after a busy day.

Organize a DIY cocktail or hot toddy tasting with a few different recipes, and get creative by adding various spices, fruits, or herbs to experiment with flavors.

Buffalo Plaid, Hudson Bay Blanket, Pendleton, Baileys, Roaring Fire, Fireplace, Cozy

For example, try a cinnamon-spiced hot toddy or a cranberry-orange sangria. Set up a tasting station with all your ingredients and enjoy sampling your creations.

This is a great way to add a fun twist to your winter evenings, and if you’re looking for a thoughtful holiday gift, you can bottle your custom cocktails for friends to enjoy.

17. Create a Winter-Themed Scavenger Hunt

Winter-themed scavenger hunts are a fantastic way to get outside, explore your neighborhood, and engage in a little friendly competition.

Whether you’re hunting for pinecones, snowflakes, holiday decorations, or even specific animals like winter birds, a scavenger hunt adds an element of adventure to any winter outing.

If you live in an area with snow, you could even hide little treasures or clues beneath the snow for extra fun.

lake cabin in the snow

Create clues that lead participants from one item to the next, or turn it into a race for who can find everything first.

For an indoor option, you could hide small winter-themed objects like snow globes or holiday ornaments around the house.

This activity is not only entertaining but encourages participants to embrace the winter season by exploring the beauty around them.

18. Make a DIY Snow Globe

Craft your own personalized snow globes using jars, mini figurines like pine trees and snowmen, glitter, and glycerin.

snow globe

This is a great activity for kids or a fun craft night with friends.

19. Create a Winter Soundtrack Playlist

What’s a winter day without the right soundtrack?

Curate a winter playlist that suits your mood, whether it’s peaceful and cozy, upbeat and festive, or nostalgic with classic winter tunes.

Share it with others or use it as your soundtrack while you relax at home or play it during your activities and on winter outings.

20. Build an Ice Lantern

Create your own winter lanterns by filling balloons with water, freeze them outdoors, and then pop the balloon to reveal a beautiful, translucent ice lantern. Then add a candle inside. The result is a glowing, icy lantern perfect for lighting up your front yard or decorating your home with wintery beauty.

21. Plan a “Staycation” Winter Retreat

If you’re not traveling this winter, make your home a winter retreat.

Turn your living space into a cozy retreat with activities like an indoor spa day or a movie marathon.

Stone Fireplace

Enjoy hot drinks, and even take virtual tours of snowy destinations.

A “staycation” is the perfect excuse to relax and enjoy the comforts of home.

22. Make Winter-Themed Terrariums

Bring a little nature indoors by crafting winter-themed terrariums.

Fill a glass container with faux snow, miniature winter figurines, and tiny pinecones or branches.

It’s a low-maintenance decoration that adds a touch of winter magic to your home—and can be a great gift idea for someone special to lift their winter blues.

23. Go on a “Winter Beach” Adventure

If you live near a coast, consider taking a walk along the beach in winter. The landscape will look entirely different in the cold, with dramatic waves, sea foam, and maybe even a beach fire!

24. Try Winter Cooking Classes (or DIY)

Try making hearty stews, warming curries, or classic comfort foods like pot pie or fondue.

Winter is the perfect time to experiment with hearty, comforting meals.

Try out winter-inspired cooking, like slow-cooked stews, curries, or classic comfort foods like pot pie and fondue.

Consider joining an online cooking class or simply experiment with winter dishes from different cultures.

Host a cozy, home-cooked meal with friends or family.

It’s the perfect time to start a Cookbook Club, like a book club, but where you read and cook through cookbooks, meeting once a month to discuss and share a favorite recipe.

These activities will surely inspire your creativity and bring even more magic to the winter months!

Cranberries aren’t just for the Thanksgiving table; they can also be a vibrant, seasonal way to add natural beauty to your home decor. Whether you’re hosting a festive dinner, decking the halls for the holidays, or simply looking for a way to bring the cozy charm of winter indoors, cranberries can serve as both a decorative and aromatic element. Here’s how to use these brilliant red berries to add a pop of color and a dash of holiday spirit to your home.

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

One of the many special things about living in the Northwoods is that there are cranberry farms here. I shared in THIS POST about visiting one.

My friend’s husband is a fourth generation cranberry farmer and I have been able to take tours there and join in for events like Cocktails in the Cranberries where we were able to don waders and walk right into the flooded berries.

My favorite aspects of all these decor ideas is how quickly, easily and affordably they come together.

Cranberry Centerpiece

This is the perfect way to showcase a beautiful and nostalgic antique. Old cranberry scoops can be found in many sizes and made of metal or wood.

Cranberry Decorating for the Holidays

How to:

  • I took an antique cranberry scoop and filled it with faux evergreens, florals, feathers and cranberries. See the details in THIS POST.

Cranberry Tree

The look of this tree is perfect as a table centerpiece or on the sideboard as a focal point among trays of apps.

How to:

  • Grab a styrofoam cone at a hobby shop and using hot glue attach cranberries around the entire shape.
  • Set the finished cone inside a wreath of greens.

Cranberry Garland

A cranberry garland is a timeless and simple way to bring seasonal warmth to your home. Stringing cranberries onto twine or a fine wire is easy, and the end result is striking. You can drape the garland across a mantel, hang it on your Christmas tree, or even hang it around door frames or windows for an extra touch of festivity.

How-to:

  • Thread fresh or dried cranberries onto a needle and string, leaving a small gap between each berry for a natural, rustic look. If you want to preserve them longer, use a needle and thread, or invest in a small, delicate wire for a more polished finish.
  • For a more sophisticated look, mix in small pinecones, popcorn, or cinnamon sticks to add texture and fragrance.

Mixed with Bay Leaves and Oranges

Cranberry Wreath

For a simple, DIY holiday decoration, make cranberry-infused ornaments that add a touch of natural beauty to your Christmas tree. These can be made by threading cranberries onto thin wire or fishing line to form a circular shape.

How-to:

  • Carefully thread cranberries onto a sturdy string or wire to create a small loop or circular shape.
  • Hang the cranberry loop directly onto the tree branches or around the edges of wreaths and garlands for an easy and charming display.

Mixed with Pinecones

The rustic simplicity of this arrangement takes seconds and can stay out all the way through Winter.

How to:

  • Find a favorite container like an enamelware bowl and fill it with pinecones.
  • Tuck in faux berries.

In a Vase

Give the illusion of a vase full of berries with this simple tip. Its a beautiful way to show of a festive holiday bunch of blooms.

How to:

  • Find a large clear vase or canister and add a smaller one filled with water inside.
  • Fill the space between the two canisters with cranberries.
  • Add a bouquet to the inside canister of water.

Floating with Evergreens and Candlelight

This easy DIY can be done with just one candlelight vase added in a vignette or several in a grouping on the coffee table or a line down the middle of the dining room table.

How to:

  • Pull out a mason jar or clear vase
  • Add water, then pieces of evergreen, some cranberries and top with a tea light.

In an Ornament

What an easy project this is with kids or your girlfriends. They can make a great addition to a gift or as a tree filler.

How to:

  • Pick up a few clear plastic ornaments at the dollar or craft store.
  • Pull off the top and drop in cranberries, a sprig of rosemary. and replace the lid.

On Your Cakes

Instantly festive. Your cakes take on a custom look with the addition of some cranberries and leaves.

How to:

  • Be creative with adding berries and leaves to the top of a frosted cake.

On Topiaries

A dramatic impact is added to your holidays with topiaries of cranberries atop beuatiful candlesticks.

How to:

  • Pick up a few styrofoam balls at the hobby store and hot glue cranberries all around them.
  • Set them on top of vases, pots or candlesticks.

Decorating with cranberries is a simple yet impactful way to bring natural beauty and festive cheer into your home. From garlands and wreaths to table settings, the bright red hue of cranberries brings warmth and seasonal elegance to any space. Plus, they can be easily incorporated into both traditional and modern decor styles, making them a versatile choice for anyone looking to embrace the spirit of the season.

Spring Easter Crafts That Are Classy, Quick & Easy are on the agenda for the season to add beautiful homemade decor to our home.

I’m sharing several Spring Easter Crafts That Are Classy, Quick & Easy that I have made over the years and a few more from favorite bloggers that I have added to my inspiration boards to make myself.

I hope you’ll find inspiration here for projects you’d like to try too.

These DIY rope candleholders work great in my Spring decor when I love to pull in natural textures like rope and baskets and other woven items. See the tutorial IN THIS POST and the video below.

Spring Decor Rope Candle holder vases

The Supplies

A few years ago for my Spring mantel I bought some reclaimed wood open frames when they were on sale at Hobby Lobby. I picked out three patterns of blue fabrics and then cut them to fit, stapling them to the back of the frames to hold them in place.

It was so quick and easy and made such a dramatic impact layering the heights and sizes on the mantel.

Blue Spring Decor- Cabin

The Supplies

One of my favorite projects was taking an old hymnal and using the pages to do Spring DIYs. You can see all the projects I did with the hymnal in THIS POST. Here I just cut pages into strips to make the Easter grass to hold the eggs in this jadeite pedestal dish.

The Supplies

Probably my favorite item to mix in for Spring is moss. I love adding in greens. Covering some plastic dollar store Easter Eggs with moss, also from the dollar store is quick and easy. Then I just tuck them into vintage bowls and vases, nests or baskets.

The Supplies

I love taking faux stems and flowers and working them into a door hanger. The bright colors of this wreath are a welcome burst of cheer after a long snowy Winter.

The addition of a bird’s nest is perfect as the sounds of chirping are starting to fill in the quiet spaces of Spring mornings.

More Ideas From My Friends

My friend Kelly of The Tattered Pew did the cutest makeover on this thrifted bunny.

These pretty cherry blossoms are handmade with paper by The Happy Happy Nester. She has so many beautiful DIY projects.

Leslie of My 100 Year Old Home has this tutorial for a gorgeous pine cone wreath. In the pinks, it’s perfect for Spring. The pinecones make it perfect for my cabin. I’m going to have to give this a try!

How sweet are these stenciled bunnies in upcycled frames from I Watch Them Grow?

My friend Rachel of The Ponds Farmhouse is so talented! I love this flower scrap fabric pillow she made.

My friend Lora over at Create & Ponder made these precious carrots using spindles!

Michelle at Thistle Key Lane is another one of my creative friends. Look at these beautiful wooden keepsake Easter Eggs.

There are so many amazing ideas out there to inspire us. I’m working at carving out more time to do creative crafts and these bloggers tutorials help me get started.

I love pulling out some of my own each season to decorate around the house and then make more to add with them.

As my daughters get older I’m always looking for new projects to work on together it’s such a great way to gather and spend time with each other.

I’d love to see some of your favorite projects or hear if one of these inspired you! Happy crafting!

I’m excited to join another Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop hosted by Cindy of County Road 407. Each month, Cindy chooses a picture from a blogger on Pinterest and all of us participating in the hop style a vignette or space in our own style inspired by the photo. It’s amazing to see how each of us comes out with something so unique!

Valentine decor cloche Pinterest Challenge.

If you are coming over from my friend Paula’s at Sweet Pea, didn’t you love her take on the challenge! I love how Paula always shares her vintage family heirlooms and treasures! Paula’s also a fellow lake house girl.

Welcome now to our lakeside log cabin home in The Northwoods of Wisconsin where we LOVE snow! This post is all about Valentine’s Day so that means it’s all about love.

In The Northwoods we love:

  • snowmobiling
  • ice fishing
  • xc skiing
  • ice skating
  • hockey
  • downhill skiing
  • snowshoeing
  • cozying up by the fire

So like my Winter Home Tour shared, we Pray for Snow. See more of my Winter Tour in THIS POST.

Winter Decor

The Challenge

This month’s challenge photo came from Crafting While I Wait. I thought this was such a sweet decoration and was excited to style my own. My favorite part was the vintage Valentine’s.

Valentine decor with a vintage card and cloche.

I have a cloche that I bought at Hobby Lobby. Mine has a galvanized base, like the inspiration photo, but mine is more simple. I haven’t had it out in a few months, so had to go grab it from the storage closet.

For another Pinterest Challenge in the Fall we did a Cloche challenge too. See the details IN THIS POST.

Fall Vignette

Valentine Decor DIY

For this challenge I wanted to incorporate the vintage Valentines, but instead of spools I took an idea from the forest surrounding my house and used some birch branches.

The birch gave it the rustic winter look I was hoping for.

Valentine decor with a vintage card and cloche in the cabin

I tried just leaning together several birch branches inside the cloche and it wasn’t staying in place the way I wanted it to so I grabbed one of the nordic dishes that I use sometimes in my giant brass candle holders.

The red and white pattern of the dish worked perfectly with the Valentine and held the birch in place. Then I just tucked the Valentine between the branches.

I also used two more branches to become a stand for my second Valentine on the table outside the cloche.

Vintage Valentines

Vintage Valentine’s are so sweet. I love their graphics and their sweet messages. When I see them in antique shops I peek through them and bring any home that catch my eye.

For this challenge I pulled out two of my favorites.

The cute little one I used inside the cloche says Valentine Greetings and has a little snow scene and a cabin. It seemed like the perfect one my house.

Vintage Valentine
Vintage Valentine

I added an arrangement of red roses inside a pewter mug.

Red Roses in Galvanized mug

The mug was a find on one of my #thriftingwiththegals adventures. A few of my friends and I share our shopping finds on Instagram Stories throughout the week and monthly on a blog hop. See my recent post HERE.

I love that the mug has a monogram on it. I am always curious about the story behind the antique and vintage pieces I buy. Who’s mug was this? Who’s initials were these?

Red Roses in Galvanized mug

I like to keep my vignettes in a grouping of threes so the mug of roses balanced the grouping.

Thrifted vintage varsity letters become fun decor throughout the home.

I always stop to look at varsity letters when I come across them and see what letters they are and what colors.

DIY Varsity Letter Pillow

On a recent trip to a favorite antique mall I found two vintage varsity letter Ys.

I have two nieces that’s last name starts with Y so I decided to grab the letters and make a special project for them with my find.

Each Wednesday on Instagram I go #thrfitingwiththegals with my friends Ann, Rachel and Stacy. We all live in different states and love sharing in our stories each week the finds we come across.

It’s become a fun tradition! Even though we haven’t been able to meet up and shop in person together, it’s the next best thing!

Once a month we then do a blog hop together to show off in more detail what we’ve done with our treasures.

Be sure to follow all the Thrifting gals on our blogs and our social media!

I have a friend I met on Instagram named Julie, @julespillows. I ordered a vintage Minocqua (our town) pennant pillow from her. I fell in love with it! She does such a beautiful job!

I mailed Julie the Ys.

Julie used old plaid shirts to make the pillows. So she sent me photos of some sample plaids to choose from. I chose two pretty plaids that compliment the colors of the Ys.

The way Julie uses an old button down shirt to make the pillow is brilliant. On the backside she has the pockets and then the buttons. This way you can unbutton it and take the pillow cover off to launder if needed.

Another super easy project is to pin a varsity letter to a table runner. It takes minutes and can be used for a season or just one event then removed to use for something else.

Favorite colors, school colors, initials… varsity letters give a personal touch to this idea. I used the runner on our entry table. As football season starts I can add a football vignette on top.

It could be used on the dining room table as well.

When I was in high school it was a big deal for guys to wear their varsity letter jackets. It was an even bigger deal to be able to wear your boyfriends!

When my parents were in school, my dad had a varsity letter sweater.

I love how nostalgic the letters are!

A few years ago I was trying to decide how to display a bunch of Smokey Bear Pins. I remembered I had a varsity letter B. So I bought a pillow at Walmart and then attached my pins and did some simple hand stitching to attach the letter.

DIY Varsity Letter Pillow

I was so excited a year ago when another Instagram friend, @theprairiesistersvintagemarket sent me a surprise gift! Using varsity letters, they spelled CAMP on a pillow! It’s so perfect for our house!

I mailed my nieces their pillows and can’t wait to hear what think about this fun surprise, just because I thought of them gift!

And be sure to visit my friends to find out what they found!

Thrifty Style Team

This month you will find amazing projects to get you in the Summer mood inside and outside your home.

Projects from the monthly blog hop of the Thrifty Style Team

One of the projects I’ve had on my mind for a while is to turn beautiful vintage brooches into refrigerator magnets. I love DIYs that are simple, quick and inexpensive and this checks all the boxes.

It would be a really special project too if you had vintage brooches that belonged to your grandmother or other special family member. It’s a way to use them and appreciate them instead of leaving them stuck in a jewelry box somewhere.

How to turn vintage brooches into magnets?

As I go thrifting I keep my eyes out for brooches that I think would make beautiful accessories. I’m usually drawn to the ones that are flowers, bright colors and enamel.

I try not to spend more than $8 per pin.

Then I bought a pack of circular magnets.

Using hot glue, I attached the magnets to the back of the brooches. You can buy magnets with sticky backs that may work too depending on how heavy your brooch is.

They look so pretty hanging up on my kitchen refrigerator.

Family photos, my kids projects and awards all look better when hung with these pretty magnets.

Vintage Brooch Magnet DIY

And I love how favorite quotes look hung with them too.

A few of the magnets would be a great gift for a friend, family member or teacher. You could gift them in a jewelry box or candy box and even include a few special notes or quotes to hang along too.

I’m going to continue keeping my eyes out for more vintage brooches! Here are some other ways I love using them:

A thrift store find becomes a fun upcycle as a DIY vintage inspired first aid kit box.

It’s time for another round of the monthly Thrifty Style Team blog hop of inspiring upcycles, DIYs and thrifty finds. I’m excited to share my DIY vintage inspired first aid kit box. A big thank you to Julie of Redhead Can Decorate and Michelle of The Painted Hinge for hosting!

Thrifty Style Team

(Affiliate links are used for your convenience. Read my full disclosure here.)

You may be coming over from my friend Lora’s at Lora B Create & Ponder. She’s my talented “neighbor” over in Minnesota. I love seeing her projects! I’m always so inspired. For a full list of all participants and links see the bottom of my post.

Now welcome to our lakeside log cabin home, Camp Paradise. We live in The Northwoods of Wisconsin.

Summer Backyard Cabin

The DIYs I choose are always Simple + Quick + Inexpensive. This project was under $20, and only used one new object and some supplies I had around the house. Finishing this DIY took under half an hour.

Last month’s Thrifty Style Team project is still a favorite recent craft and this month’s is one too.

Each Wednesday on Instagram I join some friends for #thriftingwiththegals and we share in our stories our adventures to antique shops and thrift stores. A few weeks ago I saw this green cardboard box for $3 with a lucite handle and I had a fun idea to give it new life.

Our basement bathroom off the bunk room is decorated with a scouting theme. My inspiration was this shower curtain. I bought it six years ago on a trip to Nashville.

My dad gave my sister and me a trip anywhere we wanted to go with him for Christmas. We picked Nashville. We had so much fun! One of the days we drove to Franklin, I couldn’t wait to check out the antique shops. In one of the stores I found this great shower curtain.

We are the second owners of our cabin. The white cabinet with the red top and the red and white floor were already there. So were the cute moose knobs on the drawers and cabinets.

I collect vintage first aid kits and decided to display them in this bathroom. Several are lined up in the tall window ledge. Some I keep on the vanity.

vintage first aid kits, red cross pillow, life saving red cross books

So I grabbed some red and white craft paint and some paint brushes from our our craft cabinet and got to painting.

I used a big sponge brush to cover the box with white paint. I kept space around the handle and hardware.

Then I used a small paintbrush to paint around the details.

I freehanded a red cross with a wider paintbrush. You could easily make a stencil if you are worried about free handing the design.

The finished first aid box fits in so well with my collection and decor. It’s great for extra storage too.

I always love to keep accessories in the bathroom that make you feel a little pampered like a makeup mirror, a jar full of cotton balls, a box of kleenex…

In each bathroom of the cabin we also have one drawer we keep extra travel size toiletries in case guests forget something. They don’t have to stress, ask or take time to run to the store when they could be on the lake. They can just take what they need from the drawer.

I picked up two red rugs with white stars on them from Hobby Lobby. The Animals of the Woodlands sign is from Hobby Lobby too.

The American flag bench works great to store towels on the shelf and hold items for guests using the bathroom. I got the bench for a wedding shower gift. My girlfriends threw a party where everyone who came was given a month and had to give a gift inspired by the month. It was such a fun idea for a party. I got so many great gifts, like this bench from who had the month of July.

Welcome to Camp Paradise, our log cabin in Wisconsin. We live Up North in an area known as The Northwoods with thousands of lakes and acres of forests.

Living on a lake, I am always looking for beautiful nautical decor. For my project this month I made Nautical Candleholders.

My favorite DIYs are Simple + Quick + Inexpensive. And this project was all three. It cost under $20, only used a few supplies and took just minutes. The finished product was beautiful and will fit my home in so many ways.

I used a think jute twine to achieve the nautical look. I hot glued one end to the bottom of the vase and then twisted it around and around the vase until it was about 1/3 of the way up.

Then I cut the rope and glue gunned the other end to the vase. I didn’t leave any gaps in the rope, but kept each time around tight to the row below.

Jute Twine on candleholders DIY

This project was just that simple. I added candles inside. You could do this same project with any size vase and vary up the fillers too. They would be cute full of bobbers or match the candles to the season or your decor.

I collect old books and love to stack them in all my vignettes. For this nautical scene I pulled out some blues and reds.

Nautical Decor on Coffee Table

Changing out the pillows is another easy, quick decor change for the seasons. I bought out two of my favorite pillows from Chandler 4 Corners that have a nautical touch. Last Fall I redecorated my daughter’s room as part of The One Room Challenge in a nautical motif. You can see the details here.

Nautical Pillows on leather sofa

The candle holders look great on the coffee table. I think they will work great on the mantel or the dining room table as well!
